Well..... yes, you cannot test positive unless you have the antibodies produced once you have the virus. But there is a lag time between contracting and having enough antibodies to test positive.

And scientists do not know (but they speculate a lot) how long it takes between being infected, and showing that you are infected already. They do not even know how many get infected that never show the antibodies.

As the only way to know if people have the virus (the virus itself cannot be detected), is to use the presently existing antibodies' tests.... that is what is used to determine rates of infection. The test tell only that you have antibodies to something they cannot directly test you for.

And normally antibodies (for all other cases) are a good sign; meaning their presence that your body is fighting (or has fought) the infecting agent. Except in the case of HIV, where the presence of antibodies is used to predict a bleak future: "you are likely to have AIDS in the future".

For these reasons and more, some distinguished scientists (including some Nobel prize winners) say that the mainstream HIV - AIDS research is bad science.

Thanks for the link to an interesting documentary. Whether HIV / AIDS is an STD or not seems to be an issue which is hard for a layperson to make a decision on with ‘scientific’ research / opinion apparently so inconsistent. However, there are certainly a lot of unpleasant STDs out there so don't through your condoms away yet!

Report from Bangkok Post dated Thursday 20 March 2008 :-

HIV/Aids cases on rise again - Survey: Unprotected, casual sex to blame
================================================
Casual and unprotected sex is being blamed for the high number of new HIV/Aids cases _ with at least 40 people a day being infected. The number was released in a survey by the national sub-committee on Aids prevention.

The survey results have prompted health authorities to dust off a campaign to encourage the use of condoms.

Mechai Veravaidya, chairman of the sub-committee on Aids prevention, said new cases were mostly found among teenagers aged between 15 and 19. This group was sexually active and tended not to use condoms while having casual sex with multiple partners.

According to the survey only 13% of students in Mathayom Suksa and university level who had sex used condoms. Moreover, only 9% of office employees used condoms with their partners.

These groups were at high risk of contracting HIV/Aids as they had multiple partners without using protection. A lack of campaigning for condom use had made the HIV/Aids problem become very serious again, Mr Mechai, who was once known as 'Mr Condom' for his relentless condom campaign, said.

Mr Mechai said the country desperately needed to renew the condom campaign in a bid to reduce the number of new infections. Otherwise the disease would affect the national healthcare system.

An estimated 500,000 Thais are living with HIV/Aids. More than 80% of people living with HIV/Aids are in need of antiretroviral drugs.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organisation reported that 700,000 people living with HIV/Aids worldwide had tuberculosis-related problems.

In 2006, around 200,000 HIV-positive people died of TB-associated causes.

At the same time, doctors are studying three professions at risk of TB infection as Thailand ranks 18th out of 22 countries with the highest number of TB cases.

Praparn Youngchaiyud, president of the Thai Chest Association, said a team of researchers was studying TB infections among taxi drivers, food vendors and nurses because their closed working environments could make them more easily susceptible to the disease.

It would take another two years to conclude the study.

However, Dr Praparn believed the TB infection rate among these professions was no higher than others such as labourers.

Paijit Warachit, deputy permanent health secretary, said there were 91,000 new TB cases each year. A high number of TB infections and multiple drug resistance also prompted health authorities to promote screening tests and expand coverage of Directly Observed Treatment, short-course (DOTs), the WHO-recommended strategy for TB control.

any decent hospital, just say u need a blood test for a visa or medical
most of them do hiv as standard

no need to be "discrete" at all, nothing to be ashamed of being healthy
its not like they will fax the results to your wife in uk

shouldnt cost much or take long either day or so for results

Went for a HIV check and was taken to a clinic at the end of Suk 24 where it meets up with Rama IV(?). Small and clean clinic where they took a blood sample via prick to the finger and put the drops into something that resembled a mini version of a pregnancy test kit. 20 minutes later, received a document that stated "HIV Negative" and was charged 250b.

Was this a valid HIV test at 250b and 20 minute results?

TD - This does not answer you question. Sorry about that. But you ask if the test is valid and to my mind that suggests you may possibly have your own doubts about the credibility of the test (or the clinic?).

Was there something about the clinic that made you think the people there might not know what they are doing. If it was a bona fide medical centre with qualified staff who know what they are doing, then why not trust the results they give you.

However, if the clinic is a "one man & his dog" operation where maybe the "doc" is not really a proper doctor, then I can understand why you might want a second opinion. Perhaps it would be best to ask for that from a doctor at a proper hospital.

For what its worth, the experience of me and Mrs Shreddie at these small soi clinics is that they do not have a clue what they are talking about most of the time. You might as well go to the village witch doctor.

Did the clinic "doc" dispose of the needle after your test or just rinse it with water ready for the next patient. For your sake I hope he used a new sterilised needle for your test.

I would guess the pregnancy-like test was good... I read that the 'big' test in hospitals is actually made the same way, even if they take longer... From what I know these instant tests are considered valid worldwide... I just don't know if all offers on the market (e.g. the guy who offers such test for 1kB. in posters in places like gogo bar toilets) are real or if that market is already conquered by fake products like even the generic viagra market (penegra etc.) is...

I have to say that there was a loud "SIGH..." when I got my 'negative' after returning home. More than once my spirit was willing but my flesh was... errr... well...

And I was shocked more than one time by the readiness of TGs to go bareback. After a while I had the impression that some see barebacking as a special service they like to offer to regulars or as a sign of superior affection. How stupid is that... After focusing on regulars mostly in my BK days hardly any of them, no, hold on, literally none of them wanted to use condoms... And with my regulars I was weak, I was weak...

Very confusing this whole thing about AIDS... I'm always ready to believe that even widely supported theories can be totally wrong. Science, especially Medical Science was always ready to believe in the biggest b/s, why should that be different today... But then again it is quite cynical to deny AIDS with all these millions of dead in Africa. They die of something epidemic, don’t they? But if not AIDS, what is it then?
