Please excuse my ignorance; but I am not tech savy! I travel monthly on business to H K, BKK and China. I now have three seperate sim cards for each local. Is there a way I could have one number or something similar that I could use in all three places. If I use my American Verizon phone, each call is about $2.00.

any one of those cards can have roaming so I guess just chose the cheapest eg hong kong and use that number in all 3 countries

or just switch the sims and stick to using hk in hk etc

its only a problem if someone in thailand doesnt want to call your hk number

if its girls they mostly text anyway

other than that just stick to your home country sim, get a better network deal, and use local numbers only when u r in that country

So, how often have you changed your battery (waiting for the next 'embellishment') ?

Hi Pegasus1 - tricky situation. The best way to handle it would be by installing some kind of VOIP phone application on your mobile, like skype, with a number that can be reached from each of the countries you seek. Some of the VOIP providers will offer you local numbers in certain countries, which they will forward to your single voice line, or single VOIP number - likewise, you can make calls from that same number to these regions for greatly reduced rates (I'm paying 0.87 cents US per minute to Hong Kong mobiles, for example - yes, under a cent a minute, for international calls to HK).

well I use a couple of bberry curves and very occassionally if I have been out all day with heavy usage one of my phones has had a low battery, 10% left, so I have simply swapped the battery for another one in the other phone so that the phone I use more often has more juice

sorry daffy nothing to embellish there

im sure you can find a way to twist it

I maintain the same habit with iPhone as I have with the plethora of Nokia phones I used previously - a charger at the office, a charger in the car, a charger at home.

The phone goes in its cradle whenever I am in any of those locations (or, just plugged in), and I *very rarely* run low on power (and for that situation, I carry a battery powered charger in my bag with me).

I never missed a removable battery with my iPhone, or needed one with my Nokias. The downside of the Nokias was that at one point I needed to change over all of my chargers, as they changed the physical configurations (or, buy adapters), while on iPhone I simply keep using the same chargers, which also keep my iPods charged up just fine - so between my music players and my phone, I used the same cables and chargers. *NOT* a huge advantage, but an additional bit of convenience - that's all.

The whole argument about 'needing' a second battery has been terribly blown out of proportions by those desperately looking for negative angles.

Nokias, Blackberrys and iPhone are all fine devices that never need a second or replaceable battery, if you know what you are doing.

Daffy...
Thanks for your imput. At present I use a different SIM card (and different number), for each country. I refill my minutes at 7-Eleven. the price is quite reasonable. My only problem is that I live in America, and travel to Asia each month for about one week. This means that I am usually never in a country for more than two days. I am also traveling from one country to another. It is hard for my family and customers to reach me, because they dont know my location. I will try your suggestions, and a few others that some people gave me. I basically need a reasonably priced program for my cell thay I can use in all three countries WITH THE SAME PHONE NUMBER. thanks guys...

VOIP number in the USA (or, wherever your country of residence is), that you set up to automatically forward to whatever your current locale and SIM card is - subsequently, everyone can reach you under the same number; as it is a VOIP account, you pay the VOIP price for the call forwarding, and your local phone rings when people call for you (and they are never the wiser).

You can repeat this arrangement with identical VOIP setups in other countries, if local phone number reachability matters to you (i.e. set up a VOIP number in Thailand with an automatic forward to your mobile setup, or something similar).

daffy - hence I said "very occassionally"
when I am away from offices homes cars and cradles
incidentally I wasnt aware apple made an incar charger surely you are not advocating using an unofficial product

gasps shock horror

pegasus - if u really travel that much then u really need to change your service provider to get a decent usa roaming sim service - surely that verizon world isnt that bad - I mean its for people to call YOU on the same number, not u calling them
u can still use ur local number with a second cheap phone

but really as a frequent traveller u should be using a decent roaming service on your home sim so that anyone can get hold of u if they have too, home, family, bank, etc

First, Apple prices the 3G at $199, which seems really intrusive into the iPod market. Granted, there are no monthly fees with an iPod, but one cannot deny that a $199 3G will likely cannibalize a questionable portion of iPod sales.

At the same time, Apple CFO Oppenheimer suggested Apple will introduce “state-of-the-art new products that our competitors just aren’t going to be able to match” sometime in the last quarter of this year.

Apple COO Tim Cook referred to "future product transitions" and then outlined Apple's pricing strategy:

“One of the investments we make is to introduce new products that initially cost more because they deliver an entirely new level of value to the customer,” Cook said. “Then we ride the cost curves down with value engineering and volume manufacturing, leaving us far head of our competitors. We have some of these types of investments in front of us that I can’t discuss.”

Then, in August, Apple files 52 pages worth of touch screen tablet patents.

Last week, Wozniak predicted the "death" of the ipod. He suggested it had ran its course. Without some major overhaul, I agree.

If you connect all these dots, it seems reasonable that Apple could transition the iPod into some sort of tablet. Doesn't it?

I know they are going to refresh their notebooks and, most likely, lower the prices, but what the hell is this "state-of-the-art, new product," and "product transitions" that is suppose to be revealed before year-end?

Against all my instincts, I bought more AAPL today at $105. I would never buy AAPL right before their earnings, especially since they will likely sandbag their guidance much more than normal in this recessionary environment, but if they make a surprise announcement tomorrow, AAPL could shoot another 10%-15%. For protection, I've got a stop loss at $105.

So....tablet tomorrow, or just another iPod refresh? Or some sort of tablet/notebook combo?

I have no idea, but it's worth a bit of speculation.
