DD, when buying an iPhone in the US, do you need to show proof that you have an AT&T account? Or do they assume that you will get one and not find some way to unlock it (assuming that it can be).

They sign you up in the store, when you buy it - thus, there is no way to leave the store without an activated iPhone 3G.

You *CAN* cancel your contract, and pay an early termination fee - but if you do so within less than 30 days, they will ask for the iPhone back (albeit charge you no fee), and after 30 days, you can keep the iPhone, and then pay $175.

Thus, if you do this, it will 'cost' you 30 days (or someone in country who will jump through those hoops), $199/$299 for the phone + $36 activation fee + $175 ETF + 1 month of the minimum plan you signed up with.

Essentially, a 16GB iPhone will end up costing you roughly $600 - and it will be locked to AT&T with no way of software unlocking it from there, currently.

There are various other tricks, same as were used a long time on the 1st gen iPhone, on the way to an unlock, namely then fabled Hack-SIM / Stealth-SIM scenario -- these have been proven to work by a Brazilian Team, but are essentially highly illegal via most carriers, as they seriously mess with the GSM registration methods on a given carrier's network. Besides being time-bombs, they are living on borrowed time, as that loop is bound to be closed soon as well.

So, this means, you won't be bringing a bag load of iPhones the next time you are in town?

No, it just means I won't be bringing a bag loaded with iPhone 3Gs next time I am in town. It appears that all of these situations have significantly inflated the value and prices of the stock of 1st Generation iPhones I held back since my last trip - a minor bit of speculation, you might say

The true killer app that came along with iPhone 2.0 is really the App Store that, while populated to 90% with useless stuff, has about 10% of what I consider to be killer apps.

The true killer apps will be those that in their next generation will be able to fully leverage the GPS - right now, the GPS is nice, but really little more than a gimmick able to show where you are. Really, not much different in what any other phone with GPS does. What will matter is when the next generation of GPS enabled apps is released, and what kind of features those will bring to the table.

In the meantime, here's a handful of apps that I have found particularly useful, neat, or indispensable.

- Lonely Planet Thai Phrasebook : commonly use phrases grouped by situation, but the 'search' field brings it home to you, and lets you find what you need - with spoken samples to listen to, or just point at a Thai. Minor drawback, most are in a male voice/form, so not as flexible for female travelers. Nevertheless, a pretty useful little tool, and makes for fun means to break the ice or start conversations.

- TruPhone : basically, a VOIP phone on your iPhone. You top up your account, and are then able to make 6 cents/minutes phone calls to landlines, 30 cents/minute to mobile lines (other countries vary, you can look them up). Truphone to Truphone calls are free. Drawbacks are that it doesn't work with handsfree/bluetooth system, and you have no way of knowing when your friends are online, and you can not receive calls on it unless its active. Minor issues, if you are looking for the convenience of on-the-go calling at low rates. Like all VOIP applications, it only operates over WiFi, not 3G.

- Stanza : eBooks and PDF files on the go. Just transfer your own eBooks or PDF files, and you can carry whatever you need with you. Convenient for books, reports, travel itineraries, coupons, hotel vouchers, etc... Some PDFs need some massaging to work. Requires a Stanza account.

- InstaPaper : download websites to it, it stores them, you watch them later online. Great for while you are on a plane, or in places with less optimal reception. Also, neat for carrying around web published documents. Requires logging in to an account of InstaPaper.

- ComicTouch - grab your pictures, or snap pictures, and transform them into comic panels, only to then send them on to your friends or re-use them in a blogging app like....

- Wordpress for iPhone : with WP4iPhone you can just connect to your Wordpress based blog, upload your posts and pepper them with images. Blogging on the go!

- 43actions - not technically an iPhone app, as it's a Web App, but it's an insanely great ToDo manager, with the ability to email items to it - based on GTD concepts, so it's good. So far, the best of the GTD ToDo lists I found.

That's just a few, but I found these pretty useful.

No rush to get a 3G phone for Thailand since the 3G network is still in the government planning phase. I would predict a year handicap on any date the Thai government states.

TOT 3G plan to go to Cabinet
By Telecom Reporters
THE NATION
Published on August 4, 2008

The Information and Communication Technology Ministry will submit the 3G mobile broadband business plan of TOT for Cabinet consideration tomorrow.

ICT Minister Mun Pattanothai said the 2009-2011 plan would see TOT spending Bt29 billion on rolling out the 3G network nationwide and the project would break even within seven years.

Mun said the network would be leased to telecom-operators because TOT wanted to be the network-provider.

A TOT source said that in the first phase TOT would upgrade 500 existing base stations of its joint-venture cellular operator Thai Mobile in Bangkok and major provinces to 3G technology to enable launch early next year. Thai Mobile currently provides conventional cellular services in the 1900MHz spectrum.

In the second phase TOT will install 5,220 new 3G base stations across the country.

TOT targets at least four million 3G subscribers on the network within five years of the service launching.

Many private cellular operators, including Advanced Info Service, are interested in joining with TOT to develop the 3G service.

Mun said the project had to be approved this year or Thailand would be left behind by its neighbours in 3G technology development.

Sadly, you are probably right - and despite that iPhone 3G will sell well, even without 3G service, Apple probably doesn't want to launch a device called '3G' in a country without compatible 3G, which is unfortunate.

On the other hand, having a semi-monopolized single network will also eliminate any of the issues of which carrier has better coverage where, and so forth, while spreading the cost of the network infrastructure amongst all the carriers - so, technically, everyone could benefit from this.

Well, everyone, except the consumer having to wait until 2011...
