...and once again, he pretends to speak with authority and fails to read any of the links and evidence presented.

It sure is fun setting this up.

Well, here's a CNN/Fortune article rehashing the same issue:

http://apple20.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2008/08/25/mapping-the-iphone-3gs-dead-zones/

as well as Yahoo:

http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/patterson/25878/wired-survey-att-network-to-blame-for-iphone-3g-woes/

I'm sure in 3-4 days, CS' paradigms of technology reporting, NPR, will do what they always do, rehash and regurgitate the same story -- at which point it will HAVE to be considered to be gospel, in CS' world.

While attemping to update my iPhone to 2.1 the iPhone fried itself. Apple kindly replaced the phone gratis, purchased 11 months ago. I know 3 people that have had their iPhone crap out within a year. Of course Apple is replacing the phones. If this is representative of the failure rates for the iPhone then future profits could be pressed. Could be an explanation for Apples recent stock fluctulations. A $300.00 phone should last more than 11 months.

Apple will only guarantee the replacement phone for remaining period on the original iPhone. A good indication of the life expectancy of the iPhone, about a year. Good thing I purchased the phone on my AE card, got another year.

With AppleCare for $59, you'd get two years of coverage on the iPhone. If purchased with AmEx, you'd get a third.

Any mass produced item will have a certain amount of failures, due to bad batches from the sub'd manufacturer. This happens with nearly all consumer products -- how a company deals with these kind of situations, is what matters.

As you yourself experienced, Apple will swap a defective product hassle-free. This is not just limited to iPhones. I have had them do so equally well with mice, keyboards, airport network base stations, etc... A little known fact is that if have your desktop AppleCare'd, this also includes the primary display monitor, *AND* additional peripherals, like Airport Base Stations, etc...

You have an opportunity to get additional coverage via AppleCare during your replacement experience, which is well worth it if you plan to hold on to your phone for another year. Apple will usually also replace the phone for a broken screen. The only thing they will not replace, is when damage is caused by water damage.

Apple, just like any manufacturer, includes compensations for a certain percentage of failures in their calculations. The failure rate is still WAY below expectations, at this point.

Huummm.....Apple never informed me of Applecare, even when I inquired about the coverage. May stop in and purchase Applecare when I return home. I think I may require it, given the less than 1 year life expectency of the iPhone. Maybe that is why it was not offered.

It is not the policy of Apple Stores to hardsell or otherwise push AppleCare. They will remind you of it at the time of purchase, but that's usually it.

Furthermore, most staff and managers are confused (seriously) and believe ACare can only be purchased and activated at time of purchase -- this is not so, as ACare can be purchased and added at any time during the original warranty period. If a Store insist to the contrary, you can point them to ACare's terms of service... or have them call me

That is exactly why I recently choose a Blackberry. At my previous job I was given a Blackberry and it was extremely reliable (everyone in the company had one and I don't know of a single failure). Also, although the Blackberry is not as easy to use as the Apple, it does have much better audio quality on phone calls (but iPhone is no worse than most other phones).

When I recently purchased a phone for myself I was afraid to get an Apple iPhone because of the reliability issues. I asume that if you have to buy a new one without a new contract, then you may have to pay a lot more than $300 to replace it (the $300 cost in the US is the subsidized price based on a new 2-yr contract). Even if the iPhone has average mobile phone reliability, it is so expensive that if it breaks after the warranty period, then that is a lot of money one has lost.

Apple Runs the Table on Mobile Traffic at Engadget.com
Posted by: Peter Burrows on August 21

iPhone 3G users might be suffering some reception problems when it comes to mobile browsing of the Net. But judging from Engadget’s analysis of its traffic, owners of iPhones and iPod Touches are getting through a whole lot more than users of any other kind of non-PC device. Actually, it’s not a question of more. It’s a question of only—as in, the only non-PC devices being used by Engadget fans to any significant degree are these two Apple devices.

Check this out:

Top 25 mobile / non-desktop devices hitting engadget.com (Jan 1, 2008 - Aug 20, 2008) Note: some in the top 25 have few enough views that they don’t constitute 1/10th of a percent (hence 0.0%). These stats don’t include m.engadget.com

Apple iPhone - 79.8%
Apple iPod Touch - 16.0%
Nintendo Wii - 1.1%
HTC P3650 (aka Touch Cruise) - 0.5%
Nokia N95 8GB - 0.4%
Nokia N95 - 0.3%
HTC X7500 - 0.2%
LG VX10000 Voyager - 0.2%
Nokia E90 - 0.2%
Nokia N82 - 0.1%
Nokia E51 - 0.1%
Nokia N95-3 NAM - 0.1%
Palm Treo 755p - 0.1%
Nokia E61 - 0.1%
Sony PlayStation Portable - 0.1%
Nokia N73 - 0.1%
Nokia N81 - 0.1%
Nokia N78 - 0.0%
Nokia 6120 classic - 0.0%
Nokia E65 - 0.0%
Danger Sidekick III - 0.0%
Motorola RAZR2 V8 - 0.0%
Samsung SCH-U940 - 0.0%
Motorola Q9 - 0.0%
Sony Ericsson P1i - 0.0%

It doesn’t surprise me that Apple is driving most of this traffic; we know from AT&T that the iPhone is driving the vast majority of mobile Internet usage. But I would have thought that Apple’s dominance would have been somewhat lower with Engadget’s tech-savvy crowd, who are far more likely to have tried surfing from the other devices on the list than most people. It will be interesting to see just how much the iPhone rules mobile traffic as more mainstream sites share their data.
