Finally, an explanation of iPhone 2.02 software for iPhone 3G, and why it DOES make a difference (i.e. how it works) :

The mysteriously terse synopsis of the improvements made in iPhone 2.0.2, listed only as “bug fixes,” didn’t shed much light on why Apple’s Jennifer Bowcock could tell USAToday that “the software update improves communication with 3G networks.” However, our source close to AT&T helped illuminate why the update was necessary, what the problem was, and why the update didn’t immediately impact users equally.

The iPhone 2.0.2 update “fixed power control on the mobile,” the source told RoughlyDrafted. UMTS, the technology used to deliver AT&T’s 3G network, refers to phones and other client devices as “UE” for user equipment, and the base transceiver station towers as “Node B.”

Why the iPhone 3G dropped calls

“In UMTS,” the source said, “power control is key to the mobile and network success. If the UE requires too much downlink power then the base station or Node B can run out of transmitter power and this is what was happening. As you get more UEs on the cell, the noise floor rises and the cell has to compensate by ramping up its power to the UEs.”

“If the UE power control algorithm is faulty then they will demand more power from the cell than is necessary and with multiple users this can cause the cell transmitter to run out of power. The net result is that some UEs will drop their call. I have seen the dropped call graphs that correspond to the iPhone launch and when the 2.0.2 firmware was released. The increase in dropped calls,” the source said, were the result of “dropped calls due to a lack of downlink power.”

Why the iPhone 3G suffered poor data throughput

“The power control issue will also have an effect on the data throughput, because the higher the data rate the more power the Node B transmitter requires to transmit. If the UEs have poor power control and are taking more power than is necessary then it will sap the network’s ability to deliver high speed data.”

“This is one of the reasons why AT&T has been sending text messages to users to persuade them to upgrade to the 2.0.2 software. In a mixed environment where users are running 2.0, 2.0.1, and 2.0.2, the power control problems of 2.0 and 2.0.1 will affect the 2.0.2 users.”

“It is not the network that is fault but the interaction of the bad power control algorithm in 2.0 and 2.0.1 software and the network that is at fault. The sooner everybody is running 2.0.2 software the better things will be. Having seen the graphs the 2.0.2 software has already started to make difference.”

That explains why some users saw no immediate impact after installing iPhone 2.0.2, and why tests of individual iPhone 3G models showed no significant difference between the 2.0 and 2.0.2 software: the problem was only evident when a critical mass of phones all acted in concert to run a given cell tower out of power. This also explains why users in locations such as San Francisco and New York were seeing bigger problems than users in less densely populated areas where fewer iPhone 3Gs were in use.

hhhhmmm thats weird I thought you said that it didnt drop calls and that it didnt have any problems and even if it did it wasnt apples fault??

so how are they fixing a non existant problem?!

and of course they want to encourage everyone to install the new software - so they can brick all the unlocked ones again

It does not surprise me that iPhone is at the top of the engadget list. First it is the new 'fad' for the masses trying to keep up with the Joneses and secondly it seems that US mobile providers are not featuring Nokia phones for their plans.

A couple of reasons for this. Except for ATT, most providers want to keep their customers tied to CDMA phones as that forces customer loyalty.

Another reason is that US GSM networks are not very well developed. Once I get away from the 'big cities/major highways' I have almost no reception at all for my GSM phones.

The result is that Nokia is not putting a lot of effort in the US but are focusing on the EU and Asia instead.

sspark - Technically Blackberrys are not phones but PDAs with voice capabilities, at least that is what the geeks at Best Buy tell me...

Disclaimer: In the end I really do not give a rat's ass if other people are using the same phone I do. My phone gives me the services I need on a reliable basis. A piece of 'bling' to make a fashion statement is not my idea of a good purpose for a phone...

Not been to the USA much, lately, have you?

It's kinda funny how invariably those who never used one, or who cling to some outdated tech, for one reason or another, simply do not 'get it'.

It's the Software, Stupid!

Oddly, Nokia dreams about their phones becoming the kind of fashion statement / status symbol the iPhone has become - the design of most of their phones demonstrates that 'want'.

Doesn't really matter - glad your N95 works marvelously for you to help you track your golf scores.

It seems like all the reliable news sources are going down the toilet. Here is a classic f*** up from Bloomberg.

Financial news service Bloomberg spooked some Apple investors on Wednesday when it mistakenly published an obituary for company co-founder Steve Jobs.

The incident occurred at 4:27 p.m Eastern time after a reporter making updates to the stock 17-page obit inadvertently pushed it to thousands of corporate clients through a newswire.

A copy of the release snagged by Gawker shows template holders for Jobs' age and cause of death. Also published with the piece was a laundry list of people Bloomberg reporters should contact in the event of Jobs' passing, including former girl friend Heidi Roizen and Atari founder Nolan Bushnell, who purchased an early circuit board for the game Breakout from Jobs and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak back in the 70's.

The obit opened by commending Jobs as the man who "helped make personal computers as easy to use as telephones, changed the way animated films are made, persuaded consumers to tune into digital music and refashioned the mobile phone.”

A quote from Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, also published early in the obit, praised Jobs as the best "inspirational leader" he'd ever met. "He's got a belief in the excellence of products," Gates said in the quote recorded over a decade ago. "He's able to communicate that."

Jobs' health has been an ongoing topic of concern for both investors and those who admire his contributions to modern technology ever since his triumphant battle with pancreatic cancer five years ago. Those worries peaked earlier this year when unsettling photos from Apple's annual developers conference raised new questions as to the cause behind the chief executive's increasingly gaunt appearance.

The Times later reported that Jobs had been battling a nutritional problem in the wake of his cancer surgery, and that he recently underwent a second surgical procedure to address an issue that was contributing to his weight loss. However, some still feared his cancer may have returned in the process.

To set all matters straight, Jobs personally contacted the Times' Joe Nocera by telephone, called him a "slime bucket," but then added that his ongoing health issues weren’t life-threatening and that he doesn’t have a recurrence of cancer.

Which is exactly my point - the 'old reliable' news sources or nowadays just old -- you can find better researched, and far more factual reporting in varied different places.

Of course the old and inaccurate news source are usually valued by people that are quite out of touch.
