That sucks - in a big way. Not unexpected from TRUE, though.

I would like to say that this shows bad selection on the part of Apple, but I really wonder if AIS, DTAC or any others would have been much better?

Seriously, what's the holdup with the SIM cards? It's not like they are out of SIM cards, though I guess they have to use the 'special' iPhone 3G SIM cards (I ran into that in Europe as well).

on the SIM card issue.
I have a 3g iphone from HK which I have been using in thailand with my TH AIS sim that I had cut at MBK where they put a micro chip foil over it so that the phone would read it. works great in thailand (although I can't access the apps) but not overseas in eg singapore.
i went to the true store in paragon yesterday to try and get a sim card via a true contract but a) they said they are only selling the phone + contract package and b) thought it wouldn't work in my phone anyway - isn't apple a worldwide organisation?

any ideas???

Unfortunately, that's the arrangement Apple has with most regional carriers, that they sell iPhone and service bundled.

You should check if your HK is unlocked (i.e. not needing the foil they sold you), as HK also sells fully unlocked iPhones (depending on carrier), or alternatively there is a software unlock for the iPhone now available (as long as you do not run version 2.2.1)

Technically, if you just secured the proper iPhone SIM card, you could make it work, but that seems to be a problem as they won't sell them to you separately.

I was in a G-Club last night, and 2 girls out of 4 have iPhones. One of them had a modified version of the software with Thai input. It's a hack, as the guys who did it overwrote the Russian keyboard as the did with the older iPhone software. Still waiting for a true multi-language input phone. iPhone comes close, but it still lacks the proper Thai input and support for Arabic language (the characters are reversed and it lacks the glyph support).

Which I find somewhat surprising, seeing as how they have non-roman input systems on iPhone now, and they certainly had plenty of time to provide a Thai keyboard, and dictionary -- then again, seeing as how Apple bought the Japanese and Chinese input systems from enterprising programmers in both regions, maybe there is an opportunity for some Thai based programmers?

I'm guessing that, based on the inflated prices TRUE quoted for their iPhone Apps, that they are working on providing that, and a future version of iPhone OS will include an appropriate Thai localization.

At least they went with the suggestion of adding the 16kb Thai font to the included fonts a couple of revisions back. That's a start.

in my business circles, everyone uses blackberry...... not a knock on I phone, just an observtion..... most of what we do is simple communication, email, text, pin...... the other day 5 of us were at a table and all 5 had BB's...... None of us are into the app side of the mobile world, we just use it to communicate. Long baterry life, good quality phone, much better than the 2 HTC's I had before and also the Motorola Razr.......

By all means - the Blackberry has its place, and in my opinion BBerry is doing themselves a disfavor by trying to go after the multi-touch big screen market, and trying to compete in a niche where they can't - typical corporate knee-jerk reaction, though. Oh well.

There is certainly a segment of the market that is well served by the BBerry, and you pretty much just illustrated it with your example -- businessmen who simply need quick textual information, and can't be bothered with what they perceive as bells and whistles. It works very well for that crowd.

my kids are into all the fancy stuff..... I never have had much use for anyhting out of a phone besides the basics. oh, and one last part..... internet access.... to check flight status, stock trading, news. Other than that, I will never be a super user. I have started to travel without my lap top now too. Just use my BB for communication.

Mr Alan
This is what happens to people who have iPhones:

Body dragged nearly 20 miles on NYC highways

NEW YORK—A van traveled for nearly an hour over busy New York City roads before its driver discovered the horrific cargo it had dragged almost 20 miles: the partially scraped-away body of a man who was plowed over by an SUV just before he got caught under the van.
Police said the gruesome episode was accidental and that they have no plans to charge the drivers at this time.

But that did not diminish the shock of seeing a dead man hooked under a van that had just traversed some of the busiest roads in the city. Police said the driver, Manuel Lituma Sanchez, had no idea he hit the victim until the end of his trip, when a bystander told him something was dragging under his van.

Investigators were working to identify the body, which was found largely intact but horribly battered. The man's heels were shorn off. His clothes and several layers of skin on his legs and buttocks were worn off. The back of his head was worn through to the scalp.

A business card, Western Union receipt and a broken iPhone were found in the man's pockets, NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said.
