As I said, and the article you link to confirms:

"So what exactly is the BlackBerry Magnum? Apparently only a U.S. HSDPA, BlackBerry Curve 8900 form factor with a BlackBerry Storm-like touchscreen.

Which, although exciting, kind of sounds like a souped-up Palm Treo.

Anyways, the amount of BlackBerrys RIM is looking to release is making my head spin. We’ll tell you more as we learn it."

How nice - something from RIM to compete with the Palm Treo -- let's compare notes a week from now, and see how 'cool' it is, then...

this phone is going to face very stiff competition from smart phones made by Google
Not likely - despite the continuous rants of the clueless about Google's Android to compete with iPhone, Google has no interest in competing with iPhone. Android's target are Windows Mobile hardware and manufacturers, and to provide a free alternative to manufacturers to Windows Mobile. It's about taking marketshare away from Microsoft, not Apple. In that, they might succeed.

RIM
RIM is unlikely to succeed in proving to be any real competition - they are in a mode of desperation, and they are struggling to maintain their status quo - and they know they are slipping. iPhone gets better with every iteration, and in another week, RIM (and their users) will realize just how far behind the Blackberry platform is. Add to that Palm's Pre, which appeals mostly to Blackberry users, and RIM has an uphill battle -- not just against Apple, but against Palm.

maybe even Palm.
Palm finally provides a viable alternative to those who 'hate' Apple and the iPhone, and who quietly had to admit to themselves how terrible Windows Mobile is (and none of them even considered Google's Android). To them, Palm's Pre is the answer, and they will happily flock to the Pre -- all 20,000 of them.

There was a huge smashing sound heard at Noon CA time. Initial CIS investigations by BIB indicate it was by current iPhone owners realizing that they are locked into a contract with a now inferior iPhone. It seems that Apple finally came out with a much better phone addressing most of the user requests for improvements/features except it still does not have a flashlight/flash for camera.

I wonder how soonm True Move will offer the 3GS?

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/2470582/New-video-iPhone-launches.html

APPLE has finally taken the wraps off its new iPhone - with a model that lets owners shoot and share home-made movies straight to YouTube.
The iPhone 3GS device, which goes on sale on June 19, also works three times as fast as its predecessor and has voice control to ask it what music is currently playing or request it changes tracks to another band.

The current 16GB version will cost up to £185 depending on what tariff is selected on the O2 network.

A new 32GB version will sell for up to £275, again dependent on tariff.

One or both models is likely to be free for those paying a higher monthly fee.

From today, Apple is also slashing the price of the old 8GB version of the device to less than £80 in America, with the UK cost not yet revealed.

The new iPhone, tagged with the letter S to represent its speedier insides, also has a digital compass and an improved stills camera which takes snaps at three megapixel resolution.

There is also the ability to finally send picture messages from phone to phone.

However, the camera is still inferior to many of its rival mobiles on sale today, which have resolutions of up to eight megapixels.

A new Samsung model due out soon will have 12MP.

The iPhone's battery has also been enhanced giving up to nine hours of internet surfing, 10 hours of video, 30 hours of audio listening and five hours of talktime.

The eagerly-awaited release was revealed at a conference in San Francisco and followed around the world on the internet by millions of fans desperate for news of the upgrades.

In a massive wave of key announcements the US firm also went head-to-head with online retailer Amazon, rivalling its Kindle electronic book reader.

An application called Scrollmotion will turn the iPhone into a portable library, filled with digital books, magazines and newspapers to read from major publishers.

The electronic's giant also revealed it had partnered with popular satellite-navigation firm TomTom to offer its turn-by-turn direction maps on the gizmo.

The shock move means owners will be able to ditch the standalone unit used in their cars.

During its two-hour presentation, Apple executive Phil Schiller also showed how doctors could harness the power of the iPhone, with a demo displaying real-time information being sent from a patient's heart monitor.

Joe Svetlick, of gadget mag T3, said: "Apple has just raised the benchmark. The best just got better.

"The TomTom app also looks amazing, giving you near full satnav on your phone, from the biggest player in town.

"And the car kit sticks it to your windscreen like a proper TomTom as well as charging your phone, so you have full battery when you arrive. Ingenious."

As well as the new gadget, the iPhone's operating system was also given a total overhaul with a third-generation version of the software announced with 100 new features.

Owners of the first two iPhone devices can upgrade to it by paying a £xxx fee.

Enhancements include a nifty application that displays the location of your iPhone on Google's mapping system if it is lost or stolen.

You can even send it a message to make it beep, meaning crooks can't hide it in their pocket or bag.

Should it go missing indefinitely, owners can wipe all the information and personal details over the internet.

The iPhone will also now work as a modem to let people surf the internet when it is connected to a PC or laptop.

An upgrade to the firm's download software iTunes was also revealed meaning people will be able to rent or purchase movies direct from the phone.

The firm announced the past 12 months has seen it sell more than 40million iPhones and iPod touch devices.

Its close relation uses the same software operating system but cannot make calls.

More than ONE BILLION applications and games have now been downloaded to the devices by punters, many of them made by ordinary people on home computers.

Earlier in the presentation, Apple announced a range of new Macbooks boasting faster processors, more memory, longer battery life and small tweaks like adding a memory card slot to make it easy to transfer photos from digital cameras.

Tech expert Stuart Miles, of pocket-lint.com, said: "Apple's move to create faster laptops with longer battery life and improved performance from the operating system must surely be the start of the end for the desktop computer."

Apple fan James Hutch added: "I can't wait. I want it now! If only it made the tea, my life would be complete."

Really doubt if SJ will return full time at Apple towards June end, the guy is now very much a 'has been', he's had his day & did very well.
Cute bait... try harder.

That "gulp" sound heard across the US West Coast, was pretty much the sound of someone's lunch being eaten...

Those someones being RIM, Palm, and to a certain degree Microsoft...

The argument over AT&T gripes are quite silly:

- while some are griping over 'unreasonable' early upgrade costs, there is nothing unusual over AT&T holding users to their 2 year contracts. Every carrier does the same - in fact, AT&T generally allows early upgrades when a user is 18 months into their 24 months contract -- something the other carriers do not generally offer. Advantage = AT&T

- there are gripes over AT&T not offering MMS or tethering at the launch - yet AT&T has confirmed that both features will be available at the end of summer. Most whiners seem to ignore that AT&T has spent the past 6 months rolling out better and accelerated infrastructure to accommodate the 7.2 MBps mobile speeds - While I consider MMS to be useless, tethering requires the foundation of a fast network, so from where I am standing, it seems AT&T has their priorities straight in this case. Advantage = AT&T

Most protests and gripes seem quite unreasonable to me.

iPhone 3GS will be available in Thailand by August, from looking at Apple's timeframe of worldwide distribution -- probably TRUE wanting some time to get rid of inventory.

Yeah, they are really doing badly with that... they had better start listening to you, before they lose marketshare to the mobile manufacturers that include Flash... like Nokia and SonyEricsson.
