RIM is taking more than a just slice of the Apple pie after its BlackBerry Curve beat sales of the iPhone to become the best-selling consumer smartphone in the United States in the first quarter of 2009.
Market research firm NPD Group claimed that RIM’s market share in the segment increased 15% from its previous quarter, taking over nearly 50% of the smartphone market this year.
The top five best-selling smartphones in order of ranking are: BlackBerry Curve (all 83xx models), Apple iPhone 3G (all models), BlackBerry Storm, BlackBerry Pearl (all models except the Flip) and T-Mobile G1.
There’s a noticeable absence of any Windows-enabled smartphones on the list, which RIM presently dominates.
NPD Group has credited RIM’s stellar rankings to the ‘aggressive marketing’ of the BlackBerry Storm and Verizon Wireless’ buy-one-get-one promotion in the States.
“The more familiar, and less expensive, Curve benefited from these giveaways and was able to leapfrog the iPhone, due to its broader availability on the four major U.S. national carriers,” stated Ross Rubin, director of industry analysis at The NPD Group.
Smartphones now make up 23% of handset sales, a 6% rise from figures last year despite recession anxiety.
“Even in this challenging economy, consumers are migrating toward Web-capable handsets and their supporting data plans to access more information and entertainment on the go,” added Rubin.

nope sorry I dont get it, I subscribe to the school of buying something I will use, not something someone says I need
i also subscribe to the blackberry school
and we all know the asian bargirl school is all face and who has the biggest sponsor blah blah
if she wants an iphone who am I to argue, its her choice, im sure it will be sold lost stolen replaced long before she ever tires of firmware 2.3 and really craves 2.4 and that someone in mbk cant upgrade the software for her

I have been told that these days when you apply a software update the iPhones are not relocked by APPL.
I have also been told that the iPhones available in LOS from TRUE are not locked.
Is this correct Dr. von Quack....

That depends on the type of 'unlocked' iPhone you bought - if it's an MBK special, with a hack on a previously locked iPhone in order to make it viable on Thai carriers, then it will not survive the software upgrade, and you end up with a freshly locked iPhone. Which is why these iPhones are not actually 'unlocked'.
If you purchase a TRUE iPhone, or one from Hong Kong, or one from Belgium and request an unlocked iPhone, then you will receive one that is unlocked by Apple and those will, of course, be capable of having their software updated and remain unlocked -- as they look up their IMEI from Apple's list during the activation phase, where they are identified as unlocked.
You generally pay the equivalent of a $100 premium for that condition. With the slew of new updates coming out over the next year, that's a good investment.

It's pointless to even bother with an answer for you, considering that the yearly iPhone refresh has always taken place in June, and is more or less of a ritual by now - combine that with the press heavily speculating on what the new iPhone will include since, oh, January -- and there's your shortlived RIM supremacy.
In addition, iPhone 3.0 software has been available (to developers) and been talked about since last March, and it has been announced as being available on June 8th - which coincides with Apple's WWDC, where iPhones get released.
As for what's in it - iPhone 3.0 software contains all the information for what the new iPhone and other products will contain.
