You've just explained yourself, why RIM's phones are *not* a single model - but individual, distinct devices.
Besides, you deliberately provide shortened, inaccurate information - Blackberry produces:
Blackberry 8800
Blackberry Pearl / Pearl Flip
Blackberry Curve 8300 / 8520 / 8900
Blackberry Bold
Blackberry Storm
Blackberry Tour
Out of those, while some overlap in features, they are treated individually by RIM, and they also identify themselves as distinctive models -- for example, their browser's user agent identifies them distinctly. Same with those that have a camera built in, and allow uploads. Additionally, they don't all use the same software, have the same browser, etc...
All iPhones, because they all run the exact same firmware, are recognized as 'iPhone' - in fact, Apple in general counts all 'iPhone OS' devices, which includes iPod Touch devices, for various marketshare numbers, or online penetration numbers.
When iPhone became the #1 camera upload platform on Flikr, it counted all iPhones, because that's how the software identified itself (rightfully), while all other devices went by individual devices (albeit RIM is nearly non-present on Flikr, anyway). Fact is, the individual manufacturers choose on their own to make the distinction between their models - Apple has a single software OS / Firmware for their iPhone OS devices as it allows them to optimize engineering efforts, which results in their profit margins, and the ease with which they can support new features across the board (for example iPhone 3.0 software contains, to a large degree, Snow Leopard code and features, split from Apple's desktop OS effort -- again, optimizing their engineering resources).
Other manufacturers, like RIM or Nokia are large enough to be able to do the same, if they wanted to -- but they clearly don't feel the need. I predict they will feel a desperate need to do so, once it is too late, right before they fade into insignificance.
In fact, Nokia, after a disastrous loss in profits (billions in losses) and a declining marketshare, has just announced in tossing their weight behind Linux as their declared unified Phone OS. We'll see how that goes.
HTC, one of the smarter ODMs out there, has already announced switching half their smartphone production to Android, and is estimating to switch 80% of their phones to Android in 2 years. Considering that HTC manufactures 80% of Microsoft's smartphones.... well, you do the math...

mr edge I fear it is you who needs to read - read my post - I was asking daffy if he was implying that apple only made one model - and according to him, in his own words, yes an iphone, 3g iphone and 3gS iphone are all the same!!

i certainly wasnt implying that - I stated that imho apple produces more than 1 model of iphone as all 3 are different - daffy disagrees and thinks a 3gS iphone is the same as a normal iphone - hhhhmmm just has different numbers then right?!

Again, you don't know what you are talking about.
The software on 3G, 3GS, and even first Gen iPhone and iPhone Touch is the same, differing only by a wrapper that identifies the different model it is paired to. The operating system is the exact same though - including version and subversions of the various subsystems.
Pointless to try to explain this any further to the likes of you, though, where any information is the equivalent of pearls before swine.
