Really? What about capabilities such as GPS and camera resolution, etc? Even headphones are not interchangeable between 2 G and 3 G models.
OS X self-configures -- just as it does on desktop machines. If you have a machine with or without Bluetooth, OS X recognizes the presence of the hardware, and activates the module it needs or doesn't need.

That's why they use OS X, as it allows this kind of flexibility, by just developing a single core firmware. GPS and camera support are good examples (and there are some rumbles that autofocus support is simply not included (one dynamicly linked module) in first gen firmware, but the entire GPS subsystem *IS* present (as you could be using an external GPS receiver under iPhone 3.0, plugged into the dock port).

iPhone 3 headphones do work on iPhone 1, by the way.

iPhones STILL exploding...

"Half a dozen new cases of "exploding iPhones" have emerged in France, as Apple faced an official inquiry and calls to come clean over possible risks linked to its smartphone

Apple is accused of trying to hush up 15 cases of iPod music players heating up and bursting into flames in the United States and in one similar British case, all apparently due to overheated lithium ion batteries

France's official competition, consumer affairs and fraud watchdog, the DGCCRF, has launched an investigation to find out whether the Apple smartphone could pose a threat to consumers"

iPhones STILL exploding...
Yes, they are -- we're hoping you'd buy one so we can stop this nonsense.

15, maybe 30 -- let's say 100 out of 30 million is a pretty good failure rate

Any sort of explosions from an electronic portable device are usually caused by a faulty battery cell - recall the exploding batteries in Dell, Apple, Sony laptops a few years ago -- this has resulted in Apple manufacturing their own batteries used in their present line of laptops with non-replaceable, 7-hour batteries. I would not be surprised if we will soon see Apple apply this same R&D and battery manufacturing to iPhones and iPods - with the same results.

China Unicom's getting the iPhone contract - exclusive 3 year contract.

China Mobile, in a knee-jerk reaction, appears to be talking to Palm about bringing in the Pre -- a move I consider rather amusing.

Know that you're a teetotaler Daffy, but, will you at least buy every BTF member ( including EPC) a drink after AAPL zooms & you become a millionaire because of the the China deal?
Why?

They ought to be able to buy their own drinks, with all the smart stock decisions they have made - considering these are among the guys that kept insisting Apple stock will amount to nothing (not to mention SMEGMA's 'mark to market' idiocy), as well as those spouting how well the market leaders Nokia and SonyEricsson will be doing (both lost billions over the past quarters).

Anyway, I don't spend my earnings before they are earned, nor do I toss pearls before literal swine.

iPhone app wins top honors at Microsoft sponsored event

http://www.techflash.com/iPhone_app_wins_top_honors_at_Microsoft_sponsored_event56282747.html

"Awkward," whispered Startup Weekend organizer Clint Nelsen into the microphone upon announcing the top voter getter.

---------

Learn That Name, a new iPhone app designed to help people remember the names of people they bump into at events, won the most votes at Startup Weekend even though the 54-hour coding marathon was held on Microsoft's campus.

Attorney Eric Koester -- who came up with the idea because he forgot the name of one of the attendees -- said he's hopeful to have the $2.99 app approved in the Apple store in the coming weeks. Here's the 10-minute pitch.

Interestingly, 14 of the 15 teams at the event built their products on the Microsoft platform -- driven in part by the prize money offered by the BizSpark program.

But at the end of the day, it was a mobile app on a competing platform that won the most votes in Microsoft's backyard.

"Awkward," whispered Startup Weekend organizer Clint Nelsen into the microphone upon announcing the top voter getter.

"It's been an awesome experience," said Koester, who led the team of more than a dozen developers. "I was just looking for something simple and this was really way more than I anticipated in 48 hours."

In a post event team meeting, Koester slapped high fives with coders and laid out the plans for moving the business forward. "Awesome guys, this was fun. We are going to do it again," he said.

Meanwhile, Search Kick received $5,000 for winning the most votes as a startup building its application on Microsoft technologies, as well as the potential for a $5,000 investment from the Seattle technology incubator H-Farm.

More than 190 people attended the event, including developers from as far away as Chicago, Paris and LA.

Startup Weekend's Nelsen said they're hoping to have the next event at Amazon.com. Last year's event was held at Google's Fremont campus.

Crooks clean out NJ Apple store in 31 impressive seconds

And you thought making off with 39 iPods in 15 seconds was something to behold. After studying said crooks in Utah, a trained team of larcenists headed over to Apple's Sagemore location in Marlton, New Jersey in order to one-up the duo by snagging even more goods in under a minute.
As the surveillance shows, a single blunt object decimated the iconic glass doorway and enabled five hyped-up thieves to enter, snag 23 MacBook Pros, 14 iPhones and 9 iPod touches, and head for the hills -- all in just 31 seconds

Sony Walkman Outsells iPod for First Time in 4 Years

News story that is spreading today, about how the iPod has slipped to 2nd place in Japan, overtaken by Sony's Walkmen.

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=newsarchive&sid=ansrP2IonbRA

(Bloomberg, so it's 'vetted' and legit, according to the stringent journalistic criteria laid forth by China Sailor)

...of course, I would add "...for now" to the headlines, as there's something around the corner on September 9th that could potentially reverse this trend... Which is also why Apple hasn't been marketing and pushing iPods for the past several months.

...but before snpark rubs his palms together, thinking he's on to something to show the iPod heading for a defeat, hold your horses -- there's another news story from the same day that would place the above in a slightly different light.

Apple's iPhone 3GS is No. 1 in Japan

http://brainstormtech.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2009/08/17/apples-iphone-3gs-is-no-1-in-japan/

(FORTUNE - so it's vetted and legit as well - wouldn't wanna quote any hooligan blogs that don't meet China Sailor's criteria of journalistic integrity)

Considering the iPhone is also "the best iPod Apple's ever made", it shows that the iPod's loss gave rise to the iPhone's gain -- suddenly making SOny's self-serving press-release (I mean, article), seem less of a 'win' for Sony.

Add to that whatever new iPods will be released September 9th, next week, and Sony has further rough roads ahead.

Blatant Censorship or Monopolistic Control and Oppression of the Mobile Masses !

What say you, gadget lovers, over this important issue ?

Better Red Delicious Than Dead ?

----------

Apple, China to Collectively Oppress with iPhone Deal
Apple and China will work hand-in-hand to oppress users and control their lives as part of a new deal to bring the iPhone to the People’s Republic.

Apple has just inked a deal to sell its popular iPhone in China, bringing two of the world’s most oppressive regimes together in an exciting new partnership.

“We’ve been building our business model on China’s government strategy for years,” Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide product marketing, told reporters at a media event this week. “From secrecy to dissemination of misleading information and strong-handed control, the Chinese Communist Party has always been a real inspiration to us.”

Most recently, Schiller says, Apple has structured its process of restricting content in its iPhone App Store on China’s own censorship model: It makes rulings in order to protect its regime, then pretends the decisions are designed to benefit users.

“The strategy may seem obvious to everyone, but we never would’ve believed it’d actually work had it not been for China’s shining example,” Schiller noted.

As part of its deal to offer the iPhone in China, Apple will work closely with developers to create several custom apps for the country. Among the programs being planned:

•iLove the Government: A mandatory app that runs semihourly, whether you activate it or not. Based on Apple’s “iLove Steve Jobs” app, which will be built into the upcoming Snow Leopard release.

•Guided Safari: A specialized version of the Safari browser that makes sure you don’t encounter any objectionable content (or download any Guns N’ Roses songs).

•Tank 2.0: Based on the classic arcade game, this app lets you navigate tanks inside a virtual Tiananmen Square, literally squashing anyone that gets in your way.

•Cultural Twitterlution: Innovative Twitter add-on encourages dissidents to express their anger at repressive government policies in 140 characters or less, after which they’ll be assigned to re-education camps for 140 years or less.

•Secret Police: App infiltrates proxy servers to identify anonymous online dissidents; also seeks out and deletes any apps using Google Voice.

•The Little White Book: Inspirational work mixes wisdom from Chairman Mao with new aphorisms from Chairman Steve, such as “Only running dog imperialists use Windows” and “Power comes at the end of a user license agreement.”

•iMade This iPhone: Available for all surviving factory workers to express their anguish pride.

The Apple-controlled iPhone is expected to debut on the state-controlled China Unicom in the fourth quarter of this year.
