Wow, the Onion writes some great stuff. Maybe it'll get reported as gospel in Bangladesh, again...

daffy or anyone

friend of mine has an unlocked (official) iphone 3g

she has all sorts of games and apps on it, including mixtube which downloads youtube videos onto the phone and saves them etc

anyway she just did the upgrade via itunes to install the 3.0 software etc - all legal normal above board etc - she plugged into itunes - clicked yes / accept etc, it did a back up, installed, verified and restarted

it all works fine
BUT
some apps are missing - particularly the mixtube app with all her downloaded videos

where is this and how to get it back?

just googling I see others had problems with some apps disappearing

nothing was "deleted" and it says it did a backup before installing new software etc

please advise how to reinstate missing apps, especially this one - mixtube - and all her missing videos

thanks

MixTube is not an official but rather an app you can only get when jailbreaking the iPhone. Subsequently, jailbroken apps do not get backed up or restored - why would they be?

Whoever jailbroke her iPhone should have told her that. Chances are she reduced her chances to jailbreak again after she did the upgrade.

Either way, she's better off without it.

Apple just release update 3.1 - have her upgrade again.

Reminds me of a TG of mine. I gave her an iPhone, and she took it to mbk for an upgrade. The idiots at mbk frakked it up completely - jailbroken, 1000s of ringtones, hundreds of apps, and it froze continuously - of course.

Spent a good weekend recovering her data, and restoring - now it's fine, and she knows to avoid mbk. Maybe I should offer this as service, to TGs only

Again, it doesn't matter what she goes back to -- these apps and data have never been backed up by iTunes (again, how could they have), so once she updated her software, the data is gone for good.

Besides, it's next to impossible to revert to 2.x firmware (it can be done, but it's a pain, takes a long time, and most of all, why?) - she's much better off with the better features, and higher security of 3.1.

If she must have her YouTube videos on the go - well, she can either use the YouTube app to store her favorites, or if she wants offline viewing, use a utility to grab and recompress YouTube videos and store them in iTunes -- then she can sync them back to iPhone.

iPhone trumps BlackBerry in app use, social nets
iPhone users download more apps

iPhone owners are much more likely to download apps and get involved with social networking than their BlackBerry-owning counterparts, Compete revealed today in a new study. About 72 percent of Apple smartphone users are likely to have downloaded at least 10 third-party apps, but 73 percent of BlackBerry users have picked up five apps or less. The researchers add that iPhone owners are more willing to buy their apps than BlackBerry owners.

Similar data shows that iPhone users are appropriately much more active in social networking than BlackBerry owners. Roughly 71 percent of Apple users have a Facebook account where only 44 percent of BlackBerry users can claim the same. iPhone users are also significantly more likely to have a Twitter account (26 percent versus 15) and are more than twice as likely to actually use Twitter on their phones, at 26 percent compared to 10 percent. Industry-wide, only 45 percent have Facebook accounts and 19 percent have Twitter accounts, and 85 percent of smartphone Twitter users actually opt to use the website instead.

Regardless of platform, 83 percent of users prefer apps that cost below $5.

The gap in usage habits isn't explained, but Apple's much larger app catalog of 75,000 apps provides more selection than BlackBerry App World, which at last count two months ago had just 2,000 apps. RIM also forces companies with paid apps to charge at least $3 and doesn't have access to as many developers known for writing social networking apps, such as Icon Factory (Twitterrific) or atebits (Tweetie).

that just shows that iphones are used for fun and games and not for serious emails or work

Which translates into A LOT more profit and revenues - lots more people enjoy playing than working -- and if you can also do work on your play toy, well, win-win.

Blackberry -- yeah, great for email, if all you deal with is text (which is very 90s).

Enjoy it, and your shrinking market.
