Anyone using the iphone as a navigator, hand held not in-car use?
Find a decent app that lets us use it without internet/wifi/edge connection?

Sadly, I haven't found anything that does a decent job without connectivity -- after all, the core function of the iPhone is to be always connected to the internet, and this kind of connectivity is practically ubiquitously available these days.

The built-in MAPS app is what I use. There are several navigator apps, intended to be used in the car, and limited to US and European maps, that will work without being connected.

iTraffic is an app specialized in BangkokTraffic, and it's the only Thailand based traffic or GPS app. Doesn't really work well, either.

Actually, there's an app for that:

Though, granted, it let's YOU be the one who blows, which seems more appropriate.

Speaking of apps - 100,000 apps in the app store now.

That’s another 15,000 applications since Apple last confirmed how many software titles it is making available through the store, and confirms the velocity with which developers are throwing titles at the company’s next-gen mobile devices.

As reported by AppShopper, there were 101,561 approved apps, though availability of these varies by territory and just 92,870 of them are currently available through the App Store.

Similar data from analytics firm, Mobclix, reveals 103,295 apps as having been released in the last year.

Just last month, Apple revealed that over two billion applications have now been downloaded from iTunes, with over 85,000 apps then available from the 125,000 developers signed-up to its Dev Programme.

“The rate of App Store downloads continues to accelerate with users downloading a staggering two billion apps in just over a year, including more than half a billion apps this quarter alone,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO at that time.

“The App Store has reinvented what you can do with a mobile handheld device, and our users are clearly loving it,” he added.

iPhone in "striking distance" of overtaking BlackBerry

http://www.electronista.com/articles/09/10/27/study.shows.iphone.3gs.unseating.bberry/

Study shows iPhone 3GS unseating BBerry

The success of the iPhone 3GS could lead to Apple's device overtaking the BlackBerry, a ChangeWave study has found today. Since unveiling the phone in June, Apple has jumped five percent in its market share among those in the study, to 30 percent, and is within a "striking distance" of just 10 percent of RIM's BlackBerry, which fell a point to 40 percent. Palm is flat at 7 percent but successfully used the Pre to stave off the constant declines it has faced for the past three years.

Apple's situation improves further still with plans based on the next 90 days. Demand for the iPhone has climbed to 27 percent, or just nine points away from RIM's 36 percent; the latter is a sharp drop from 44 percent just three months earlier. Palm's share here is as flat as current share at a constant eight percent.

iPhone users are also more likely to be "very satisfied," as Apple's popularity grew slightly to 74 percent. RIM's satisfaction by the same token fell sharply from 48 to 43 percent. WebOS hasn't yet helped Palm recover its status as only 33 percent of owners of all kinds are particularly happy with their phones.

New introductions like the Bold 9700 and Storm2 are set to help RIM, but it now faces slowing momentum just as Apple's is increasing. A continued shift at similar rates could give Apple the lead within half a year.

Looks like QQ is ardently competing with snpark for the title of 'clueless'.

That's okay - there's plenty of space in the special schools.

http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/28/motorola-droid-spotted-in-fine-gsm-form-video/

A *very* nice evolution from the current Android revision, in terms of functionality and appearance.

On the other hand, the video shows noticeable lag and responsiveness issues during usage, as well as graphics lag and touch screen lag -- this despite the Droid allegedly having an 800MHz processor.

Obviously, my frame of reference is the responsiveness of the iPhone 3GS - which is a far more responsive platform (and will get even better next year).

Nevertheless, a decent improvement, and noting the rate at which manufacturers are dumping Windows Mobile in favor of Android, my earlier statements that Android targets Windows Mobile (and not the iPhone), continue holding true.

Additionally, what remains to be seen is what happens to currently shipping Android 1.0 and 1.5/1.6 phones (HTC G1, G2, Touch, etc...), and to see if they will all receive an Android 2.0 update (it's just software, after all), to see how much the individual manufacturers support their customers (Apple keeps providing software updates as far back as the first gen iPhone, allowing these users to run the latest version of the OS - and thus retaining their investments as much as possible -- HTC has a *horrible* history of doing (or not doing) the same).

Either way, a worthwhile evolution - I predict that same time next year, Windows Mobile will have suffered some serious marketshare losses.

So, to reiterate for the slower kids in the class - Google's Android is no competition to the iPhone, as their target is Microsoft, not Apple. Most of the innovations in Google products that are seen in Android 2.0 will trickle into a better maps application on future iPhones. Additionally, no one here is probably aware that Apple has recently bought their own maps company - mostly as Google starts to ad adverts to their maps applications, and Apple likes to remain independent.

The people that should be (and are) worried about Android, are the drones at Microsoft. HTC, the largest manufacturer of WIndows smartphones (they make 80% of them) has declared switching 50% of their production to Android phones, with a declared goal of going nearly 100% Android in the future. Motorola is going 100% Android, Palm dumped their last WinMo license, and all new manufacturers of smartphones are using Android and dumping WinMo.

Yes, there will be more smartphones in the market -- but none will prove to be much competition to iPhone, as most are still trying to catch up with the iPhone from 2 years ago. By next year, Apple will be on their 4th generation, and in the meantime, there's over 90,000 reasons to favor the iPhone ecosystem.

So far, I have been 100% correct with everything I ever said regarding Apple, iPhone and tech issues in this thread. Good luck with your speculations, particularly seeing as how they are based on guessing and lack of information.

Lastly, upon demonstrating the new turn-by-turn navigation as part of Android 2.0, shares of Garmin and TomTom fell by nearly 40%. Once Apple updates the maps application on the iPhone to provide the same, the freefall should be expected for dedicated navigation manufacturers.

Google today introduced a new (kind of amazing) Navigation app for Android 2.0. This application is only avaialble at the moment as a beta for the Droid phone on Verizon but Google is apparently working with Apple on bringing it to the iPhone.

According to CNET it isn't just the iPhone,

"Google isn't ruling out licensing the software to makers of portable navigation devices used in cars throughout the world, said Gundotra, vice president of engineering at Google for mobile and developers. The process involving Apple is slightly different from the usual App Store submission process, because Maps is a built-in iPhone application, he said."
