Yep, back at $188 -- good thing I sold 50% of my holdings at $204. Looking to pick up a couple of free shares on the rebound

"Whaaaa, I want more megapixels! The iPhone 3GS camera sucks because it has only 3.2 megapixels!" is a common chorus from those who don't understand that pixel resolution doesn't matter as much as processing of what's available does.

Granted, the first generation iPhone's 2 megapixel camera was borderline, but the current 3GS' 3.2 megapixel camera delivers some great snapshots (my best phone camera ever was the Nokia N73's, also at 3.2 megapixels - the iPhone does just as well)...

Here's a well done side-by-side comparison between the iPhone 3GS, and the Motorola Droid cameras, both snapping the same subject.

It's sadly obvious that while Motorola has put together a nice hardware package, they have also taken shortcuts when it comes to the finer details of the software - in other words, the Droid's camera sucks, despite having 5 megapixels.

Picked up the 32GB GS at the Apple kiosk at Emporium a few days ago, 30,500. Happy with it so far.

Consider the pics of apples, any one will notice that the number of apples in the Droid pic greatly exceeds those in the corresponding iPhone pic, proving that the iPhone pic is taken at closer range - it's really not an apples to apples comparison.
You're an idiot, but that's nothing new.

Both sets of pictures were taken at the same distance - Droid has a higher resolution camera, and those usually offer what appears to be a wider angle, thus what you perceives as 'farther away'.

Disregarding that, the differences in color, clarity, and processing of the pictures has little to nothing to do with what you bemoan. Can you ever get something right? Maybe just once?

Why is Apple as profitable as they are?

Because they care about (Duh!) Profit!

http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/11/11/while-rivals-jockey-for-market-share-apple-bathes-in-profits/

Here's a good piece about Apple’s pursuit of profit rather than raw market share. This might be the single key factor to understand about Apple as a business. The difference between Apple and its competitors can be striking :

"According to the report, Apple made $1.6 billion in operating profit off of the iPhone in Q3. Nokia, meanwhile, made $1.1 billion. Let’s put this in perspective. Recent numbers suggest Nokia controls roughly 35% of the worldwide handset market. Apple? About 2.5%.

Not 25%. Two point five percent."

Another way to put it is that Apple is concerned with unit share, but only in the most profitable segments of the market. Which is smart.

Please return to this thread when you learn about things like 'lenses' and 'resolution'.

The comparison is apt, as it shows what kind of pictures each phone will yield, when taken the same way, at the same distance - which was the point of the comparison.

Please go away.

Latest data from analytics firm, Distimo, suggests that not only do iPhone users have more apps to choose from, but, dollar for dollar, they get a whole lot more for the money.

While this may not be so great for developers in terms of making the most they can, the popularity of Apps on the iPhone mean iPhone users actually do purchase and use their apps.

In conjunction with this morning’s Gartner smartphone market share report, which pegs Apple as the third biggest smartphone vendor in 2009 with 17.1 per cent of the market, it’s clear there’s a lot to play for.

“Apple’s worldwide smartphone share reached 17 per cent as iPhone sales totalled 7 million units in the third quarter of 2009 following the continued rollout of the iPhone 3GS in new countries. Its ASP is holding steady and sales in the fourth quarter should be even stronger as Apple starts selling in China, through one additional carrier in the UK, and in an additional 16 countries,” the analysts said.

The Distimo report reveals:

Developers publishing applications in multiple application stores price their applications lowest on Apple’s App Store.
The same application titles are priced significantly higher on BlackBerry App World and Google Android Market than on the Apple App Store.
BlackBerry App World prices have been increasing since mid-October, from $5.11 to $5.60 (+9.6%), while pricing on the Apple App Store and Google Android Market have remained fairly stable.
The researchers found that the average price of the daily 100 highest-ranked apps on BlackBerry App World reached $5.33 as against the $2.50 average on the iPhone.

The researchers also note that switching on in-app purchasing has beefed-up the App Store. “Apple introduced support for in-app purchasing for free applications,” they said, “Since then, we have been monitoring all free in-app purchasing applications, and broke the 40 best performing applications down into the categories they were published in. Most of these applications were published in the Games and Social Networking categories (13 out of 40), followed by the categories Books and Entertainment.”

For a company that was dismissed two years ago for not having any experience in building phones, Apple seems to doing more than just OK.
