"Carphone Warehouse and Phones4U suspended sales of Sony Ericsson’s Satio after a flood of returns from angry customers citing problems with the phone. […]"

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/sony/6638125/Carphone-Warehouse-and-Phones4U-suspend-sales-of-Sony-Ericssons-Satio-after-customer-complaints.html

Speaking at the launch of the handset in May, Nathan Vautier, managing director of Sony Ericsson UK, said the phone would “help return the company to profitability”. Sony Ericsson has made a loss for the past five consecutive quarters.

Whoops!

Sometimes you'll find an analyst who takes his job seriously. Turley Muller is such a guy -- he does actual fact checking (gasp) :

I broke down and bought a 3GS from ATT that was running 3.0.1 firmware.

Upgraded to 3.1.2, then jail-broke and unlocked it with BlackRain and BlackSn0w. Took less than 10 minutes. Popped in a T-Mobile SIM to make sure it was a successful unlock.

Lucked out with my purchase since I seem to have one of the last manufactured before the new iBoot version.

At the airport and realized I don't know if the charger is 110 only or 220 volt as well. US 3GS model.

Can't read the wording with my far sightedness.

Apple chargers are universal - they will work with 110 or 220 -- just plug it in.

Just another way they make your life easier (and yes, some other companies are doing universal chargers as well, but some obvious companies still fail to do so -- considering there is no price difference in manufacturing, it makes no sense not to provide ones.

Got a Happy SIM @7-11, topped it up, then called their service number to add the 7-day Edge package. 250 baht seemed reasonable.

Had to update the APN setting for DTAC on my unlocked 3GS before Edge would work.

Sorry for posting this, as I am sure the answer is in the previous 100 pages, but have gone through ten of them and not found it!

1) How much does it cost to get a PAYG sim which allows me to use an iPhone in Bangkok? Or maybe I can get it as part of my true internet package?

2) If I want an iPhone, should I get it here, or have it imported by a friend from the US (or, indeed, the UK?)

3) Which iPhone should I get? I don't need the latest/best/flashiest, but also, I don't want something that I won't be happy with this time next year.

4) If I don't get an iPhone, what should I get? I basically want mobile internet, for fun not so much business, and I want to enjoy using the phone (I have a macbook, and like it SO much more than Windows: but spend far more time on my computer than my phone, so am yet to be convinced that I should pay a big premium for an apple phone).

Thanks for answering even SOME of the above!

No more than a pre-paid SIM for any other GSM phone. I paid 99 baht for a Happy SIM with 30 baht phone time.

I then purchased Happy's 7-day unlimited data package for 249 baht. They also have a monthly unlimited data package. The data package allows me unlimited internet access without per minute charges. Without the data package I would be topping up the SIM every day.

If you get one from the US it will be locked. I unlocked mine before coming to BKK.
