Thanks Sai Tai!

I live in Bangkok but can get one brought over and am under the impression that they are cheaper over there. Also, surely Pantip will unlock them cheaply and well?

Also, 249B for one week? I guess a monthly package is somewhat cheaper...or I don't even mind buying 3 month packages (if I know that they are good).

Not much cheaper... 1000 baht per month for unlimited.

But 250 per week is quite reasonable for me since I don't live here.

1) How much does it cost to get a PAYG sim which allows me to use an iPhone in Bangkok? Or maybe I can get it as part of my true internet package?

1-2-call SIMs start at around 100 Baht, last I checked.

top ups come in 50, 100, 300, 500 Baht increments.

You need to call 1-2-call at 1175 to request for them to activate EDGE, in which case you'd have PAYG usage, or sign up for either the 24 hours / unlimited plan (49 Baht) or the monthly / unlimited plan (1000 Baht). Note, you *need* to cancel the monthly plan, or else you get 1000 removed from your account every month.

2) If I want an iPhone, should I get it here, or have it imported by a friend from the US (or, indeed, the UK?)
US and UK iPhones are carrier locked, and will require to be hacked (known as 'jailbroken') in order to be unlocked. These unlocks are messy hacks, and while you are able to make calls, a lot of other features are compromised.

iPhones available in Bangkok, via a TRUE shop, can be bought 'no contract', which means they are LEGITIMATELY unlocked, and you can use ANY SIM in them, and you can apply any future software updates from Apple (this is important). The 16GB iPhone costs $750, the 32GB model $850. This is not significantly more than hacked iPhones, and the advantages are well worth it.

I just picked up this type of iPhone from the TRUE shop, and it works exactly as described - unlocked, and you can use any SIM in it. I also picked this kind of iPhone up from Hong Kong - same story. The Apple unlocked ones are all the same, cost the same, and will also retain a very high resale value. This is important when you want to buy the next model the next year

3) Which iPhone should I get? I don't need the latest/best/flashiest, but also, I don't want something that I won't be happy with this time next year.

Get the iPhone 3GS - there is no reason to get any other model. You can save a little money by going with the prior model, the iPhone 3G, but you will quickly run into limitations if you intend to use modern apps that use the hardware featureset of the latest models - such as the built-in compass, and added speed. The speed alone is worth it.

4) If I don't get an iPhone, what should I get? I basically want mobile internet, for fun not so much business, and I want to enjoy using the phone (I have a macbook, and like it SO much more than Windows: but spend far more time on my computer than my phone, so am yet to be convinced that I should pay a big premium for an apple phone).

Trust me - if you have a MacBook - get an iPhone. You may think as you do now, but within two weeks you will think differently. The other options are any of the HTC Android phones, but you will find out that they are not that significantly cheaper, and you will inherit more headaches from difficult connecting them with your Mac, and a serious lack of apps.

If you are looking to have fun, then you're looking at apps - if you're looking at apps, the iPhone 3GS is your only choice.

If you have been subscribed to True Visions Satellite or cable services at level Gold or Platinum for more than 1yr you can walk into any True shop, show them your True Visions bill and Thai ID card/Thai driving license/passport and in 10 minutes walk out with 2 brand new 3GS iphones, no down payment.

Admittedly there is a 2yrs contract whereby you pay 1,724 Baht per month which includes 300 minutes of calls to ANY network, 300 SMS. 300 MMS and unlimited internet and True Wifi (per phone).

Of course the 3G icon appears infrequently in the display and is a heck of a lot quicker than Edge on the iphone, but 3G it aint !

My wife and I have had ours for a couple of months and never had an over usage charge.

True just told me that they do unlimited pay as you go for about 600B, and if you get a 12 month contract, then for the same price you also get a bundle of minutes and texts. Did I misunderstand them, or is there a problem with their package?

Thanks for the advice! Especially on not getting a jailbroken one - I'd heard of the problems jailbroken ones are having, but didn't know that unlocked was different (you can tell I haven't done my f***ing research yet...:-0). I'm giving up on the idea of getting one from the states - may as well buy one from here.

Unless I want to use it as an MP3 player or have loads of vids etc on it, is tehre really any reason to go for the 16 or 32 GB? Am I going to regret getting the 8? Or is 16 the sweet point?

What credit card are you using to pay the monthly installments? They won't take my UOB (Thailand) card.

Anyone see Google officially unveil the Nexus One phone this morning? What a f***ing joke! Compare that to Apple's introduction of the iPhone. Unbelievable.

I'm sure the phone has some good features, but Google has absolutely no idea how to create buzz, especially when compared to Apple. None. It was embarrassing. It was the worst product introduction/sales pitch I've ever seen.

Once I find a link online, I'll post it. It was a monumental disaster!

Au contraire -- I think Google handled the event rather well, within what their own strategic goals are. In this specific case, to release a reference design to kick some of the other Android licensees in the shins to do better than they did (here's looking at you, Motorola!).

I think Andy Rubin, Google's Mobile Chief summarized it rather well when he said People shouldn’t focus too much on the device (Nexus One). What’s more important is the strategy behind the devices.”

Yes, Motorola might be miffed about Google having developed a far better device than they cobbled together with Verizon, but Moto should be used to that by now (remember their laughable ROKR iTunes phone?) - and while pundits constantly try to pit Google's Android offerings against the iPhone (and now, they are doing the same with Android powered tablets), these same fools don't seem to realize that 'competing with Apple' is the furthest from Google's real strategic goals - in fact, if they worked any closer with Apple, they'd sit on each others' boards (ahem.... cough).

Google caters to the low to middle end consumers, a market traditionally cornered by Microsoft's Windows Mobile devices -- and thus it comes as no surprise that the recent growth of Android devices did not eat into iPhone's sales or popularity, but has nibbled away quite aggressively at Windows Mobile's market share (RIM, as always, is in their own niche and segment).

Google's goal has been, and continues to be, to take Microsoft's pie away from them, completely and decisively - the strategy seems to working rather well, and it doesn't require 'event' marketing, or big buzz. If anything, Google's always into the understatement (if you consider understatement holding a big press conference to announce a device, talk about how great it is, and give one away to everyone who attends).

I feel Google's on the right track.

Just came back from a party with over 40 pretties/models. Shit, I have never seen so many BlackBerries in use. All of them are messaging with their BlackBerries!

Yeah, Apple Thailand has been asleep at the wheel, and the Blackberry is the 'status symbol du jour' for this round. I have a feeling that's about to change later on into the year - albeit Rim has been handling this market well.

What has been hurting Apple in Thailand (aside from Apple, Thailand), is that they never bothered emphasizing what the iPhone *can* do for a user; they never stressed the social networking aspect of it (which is what the Blackberry'nettes are using it for), and most of all, it is impossible to find iTunes store (i.e App Store) gift cards in a regular c=retail chain (yes, I know you can dig them up at MBK - you can also buy them off the back of my truck).

But mostly, the lack of active marketing as a 'communication device', and sitting on their asses is what caused this drop in popularity.

AIS has a special, cheap, Blackberry plan, with unlimited data that is easy on the consumer. FTW.

Most girls don't even know that they CAN download apps, or aside from games crammed on their iPhone, have nothing really usable.
