The price of what has been dubbed "the world's cheapest computer" should fall to $35 and could even be hammered down as low as $10, DataWind has said.
It's fun to see Negroponte's OLPC project touting "tablet laptops" for under $200 for underdeveloped nations, yet here's India, churning out an effective 7" tablet for $50 to $10 in quantities.

Just shows how out of touch Negroponte is - they should import these to the US. At around $50/each they would be a great entry level product for tablet users to dip their toe in that pond.

Someone add a hand-crank charger, or solar charger, and you have something for sub-saharan africa.

Dell announces late-2012 consumer tablet launch
====================================

LAS VEGAS (REUTERS) - Dell Inc intends to launch its first consumer tablet computer in late 2012, marking its entry into a hotly contested and increasingly crowded arena that has already claimed arch-foe Hewlett Packard.

The once-dominant corporation founded by Michael Dell has seen a growing crop of tablets and smartphones enticing consumers away from PCs. But Dell learned from the hastiness of some of its peers and understands better now how consumers value the 'ecosystem' of a tablet as much as the hardware, chief commercial officer Steve Felice said.

The Texas company, which has slipped steadily in the global PC sales rankings, had dipped its toe in the waters with an enterprise-focused, 'Streak' tablet. It now plans a bigger push into the consumer arena, Mr Felice told Reuters at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

While rivals from HP to Research in Motion introduced a spate of gadgets with much fanfare and went toe-to-toe with the still-dominant Apple Inc iPad, Dell kept a low profile with good reason, Mr Felice said.

Oh man, you can't write comedy like that.

The only way this could be better, is with a follow up comment from China Sailor, CalEden or tezza talking about how superior that Dell tablet will be..

(.... there we go, bingo, right on schedule... CalEden's obsession is as predictable as a Chihuahua puppy)

The humor is in Adobe's announcement today of them going to offer students, and teachers in Thailand up to 90% off on Adobe products for the tablet users.

This is going to be hard for them to do without government support to include any of the software in the bundle, which at those prices I doubt will be done.

Why pay bt2000-bt4000 for a student/teacher edition when you can get the full version on the streets for bt50-bt100, and there isn't a real need for anything other than the free PDF reader for classroom integration.

kenneth, that's Daffy's standard mode of operation:
1. flame
2. bait, many of his posts will contain a bait aimed at his current adversary (adversaries)
3. false and fictitious accusations
4. Then he'll claim stalking
5. Then he goes crying to the moderator that he's been wronged

It seems to me that all CalEden did was point out your tactics. No mention of any superior tablets. You also proved him correct on point 2. You are an expert baiter, a master.

Report from AFP dated 1 February 2012 :-

Congolese inventor puts African Tablet on sale
===================================

AFRICA has its first handheld tablet to rival the iPad and similar western inventions, which went on sale in the Republic of Congo, its inventor Verone Mankou on Monday.

"We have set up a team and logistics to sell the Tablet since Friday. Today, anyone can buy one," if they are in the main cities of the capital Brazzaville and the oil port of Pointe-Noire, the 26-year-old told AFP.

The Tablet is called the Way-C - "the light of the stars" in a dialect of northern Congo. It measures 19 x 17 x 1.2cm and weighs 380g and has integrated WiFi and a 4GB memory.

"In technological terms, this Tablet is equivalent to all those to be found on the market," said Mankou, referring to the US giant Apple's iPad and its competitors.

The Way-C was conceived in Congo, where it was first presented to the public in Sep 2011, but it is assembled in China, "for the simple reason that Congo has no factories and for price reasons," Mankou added.

His Tablet will sell for US$299 (S$376), which the developer, who is also an advisor on new information technologies to the ministry of communication, considered "acceptable and relatively low, considering the technology used."

For the moment, the Way-C will be sold exclusively in Airtel Congo stores in Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire, a private mobile telephone company which is a subsidiary of the Indian group Bharti.

The financing of the project, launched in 2006, cost almost 122,000 euros (S$200,576, essentially provided by VMK.

The Tablet is planned to be marketed in 10 west African countries, and in Belgium, France and India from Feb 15, 2012.

Actually, he said no such thing.

I don't think he has any aspirations to "rival the iPad", but rather it looks like yet another Android tablet, with what appears to be a 5" display.

No matter where you look, there are no specs being released, which leads me to believe that any specs will be at the lower end of the spectrum.

Either way, kudos to the guy who shepherded the project from through from conception to end.

India's Aakash 7" tablet, appears to be pretty much the same, at $60.

Here you go, some actual specs and information, after a little bit of actual research, instead of copy/paste from Google News...

http://www.southworld.net/newtest/index.php/component/k2/item/127

It's actually 7"

The tablet uses Android 2.3, promises 512 MB RAM, 1.2 Ghz processor, 4GB internal memory, and supports wi-fi. The tablet will cost less than £200 and will be distributed in Congo, Senegal, Kenya, Gabon, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, DR Congo and Belgium.

Some video of the tablet in operation:

(video's in French - you know, Congo is French)
