Did You Hear They Invented Indoor Plumbing?

Washington Post columnist Robert Samuelson:

I do not own an iPad, an iPhone, an iPod or a Mac. I abandoned my typewriter only recently. In short, I have not enlisted in the digital revolution. […]

By history’s measure, [Steve] Jobs’s achievements are tiny.

[Jobs’s] modest legacy will fade with time. A century from now, historians and ordinary Americans will still remember Edison and Ford. Jobs will be a footnote, if that.

Guy who admits he only recently gave up his typewriter thinks Steve Jobs’s achievements are “tiny”. Stay relevant, pal.

You know, a bunch of times over the past decade people have told me that they were surprised when talking to Robert Samuelson about how little he had read, and how much he did not know.

I think now we understand why...

I read somewhere that an obscure artist got heavily criticized for writing on his twitter account that "angel" Jobs never gave to charity while "devil" Gates has saved millions of children in the third world thanks to his massive charity donations.

Any truth to Jobs being stingy when it came to charity?

By the way, giving or not giving to charity does not make him neither better nor worse in my eyes; I could not care less... I just find the discussion entertaining.

Steve Job's was worth about 6 billion dollars, he made about 4 billion of that off the sale of Pixar to Disney. Is this true Daffy, the resident Steve Jobs worshipper?

Steve Jobs sold Pixar to Disney for $7.4 Billion. He was worth an estimated $8.3 billion at his death. (The Pixar sale was in Disney stock, which declined since then, unsurprisingly, reducing the net worth. His stock at Apple was worth about $4.4 billion at his death.)

Giving publicly to charity wasn't a priority to Jobs. He had no need to.

To address China Sailor's unsupported allegations - I don't seem able to find anything to verify that Wozniak left in a huff, as CS implied.. Hmmm :

http://9to5mac.com/2011/10/11/some-notable-quotes-from-apple-employees-1-and-6-on-the-early-days-with-steve-jobs/

Newsweek reporter Dan Lyons recently interviewed Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, and Apple employee #6, Randy Wigginton, following the passing of Steve Jobs. In much of the interviews Wozniak and Wigginton recall early stories of Apple’s garage days that you’ve probably heard versions of, but the men also offer a few interesting insights into their relationships with Steve when Apple was still in its infancy.

During the interview, Wozniak mentions he was asked by Walter Isaacson to talk about Steve for his upcoming biography, but Woz turned down the offer saying, “I didn’t want to talk about Steve. I was afraid he wouldn’t want it.”

When asked if he had ever had a falling out with Jobs, Wozniak remembered a story regarding  him leaving the company in 1985 leading Jobs to confront Wozniak’s new partners:

“The closest thing we ever had to an argument was when I left in 1985 to start a company to build a universal remote control. I went to Frog Design to do the design. Steve dropped in there one day and he saw what they were designing for me and he threw it against the wall and said they could not do any work for me. “Anything you do for Woz, belongs to me.” I was on my own, but I was still friendly with Apple. But Steve had a burst-out there. The people at Frog told me about it. That was the only time there was ever a fight between us, but it wasn’t actually between us. Nobody has ever seen us having an argument.”

Wigginton, who started writing software at Apple when he was 14, thinks back to when Jobs called all of Woz’s friends to ask them to convince Woz to leave HP and start Apple:

“They got along but it was funny. It was more like Woz would put up with Jobs. Jobs would bug him to get stuff done. I’ll never forget the night Jobs called all of Woz’s friends and wanted us to call Woz and tell him to quit HP and start Apple. Woz wanted to stay at HP. So we did it. Until that point, Woz was undecided.”

Wozniak also confirms the legendary story of Jobs cheating him out of money on Atari bonuses:

“The legend is true. It didn’t matter to me. I had a job. Steve needed money to buy into the commune or something. So we made Breakout and it was a half-man-year job but we did it in four days and nights. It was a very clever design.”

The Woz also shoots down claims of him and Jobs being an “unlikely pair”, saying the two used to “hunt through stores in Berkeley looking for Dylan bootlegs” together. He did, however, note that he sometimes couldn’t relate to Jobs’ business savvy in terms of turning a profit:

“Steve had a background working in computer stores buying stuff cheap and selling it for a lot more. I was shocked when he told me how you could buy something for 6 cents knowing he could sell it for 60 bucks. He felt that was normal and right, and I sort of didn’t. How could you do that? I was not for ripping people off. But then we started Apple and I went with the best advice which is that you should make good profit in order to grow.”

When Lyons asked Woz whether or not he thinks Jobs died happy, he responded:

“Of course! If he were to sit back and say, “When I was young, what was my dream in the world,” well he achieved that 100 times over. I think Steve when he was away from Apple he was unhappy but obviously he died happy. I think he died mature and cognizant and aware. I think you are lucky when you have time to see it coming. You can make sure you go out with the right things done.”

China Sailor: "First Steve Jobs was an asshole, ask his partner who built APPLE with him and bailed because he could not stand the crap Jobs was putting out."

Yeah, seems like Wozniak absolutely hated Jobs' guts and could not stand him and the crap he was putting out. Becomes very obvious after reading this article:

I worked in the Valley before Apple and post Apple Jobs, the word was out from the beginning he was a paranoid jerk. That did not change from insider information that I received first hand through out the years.

"Giving publicly to charity wasn't a priority to Jobs. He had no need to."

And all his money could only buy a liver, in the end The Grim Reaper had his final say!

Other than consumer products Mr. Steve Jobs did nothing to make this a better world! I would call it "karma"! Gates looks like the better man, even when Jobs was down, Gates lent him a hand...Gates the charitable man to the rich and poor...

CalEden: "I worked in the Valley before Apple and post Apple Jobs, the word was out from the beginning he was a paranoid jerk. That did not change from insider information that I received first hand through out the years. "

Your word (on a pussy forum) vs. Wozniak's (in print and on TV).

Let me think this one through. Just give me a second. One second will do. Ha ha...

As much as I personally dislike parts of Apple's business model, their success speaks for itself. Wozniak knew Jobs for something like 40 years, worked closely with him for at least a decade, and still is deeply saddened by his passing.

Maybe the "insiders" that you refer to only slagged him off because they were jealous, or felt bad that they were not good enough to make his team. Who knows? Just like in any other business, there'll be plenty of backstabbing and little feuds happening in "the Valley". No problem to label another person a "paranoid jerk". Unless one cannot give an explanation why. Is said explanation missing, a spoonful of salt is called for.

What one of his neighbour's had to say about Jobs:
