Study: iPad mini way outpacing last year's Kindle Fire boom

updated 08:45 pm EST, Tue December 11, 2012

Ad impressions up 28 percent per day, indicate strong sales

Last year, Amazon surprised many pundits and the public by claiming strong Kindle Fire tablet sales of more than a million per week during the holiday season, doubling overall 2011 sales. A new study that compares ad impressions in mobile apps compared that sales period to the current ad impression rate of the iPad mini and found that it garnering 50 percent higher activity than the peak of Kindle Fire sales. Calling the iPad mini a "game changer," Millennial Media safely predicts the iPad mini will emerge the winner of the gift wars this holiday season.

The company noted that even though quite a lot of iPad minis are not expected to be opened until after Christmas, the sales numbers (based on ad impressions Millennial tracks through its developer partners, meaning iPad minis already in use) would indicate that the smaller tablet is already seeing impressive sales figures. The company estimates that during its first weeks on sale, the iPad mini managed an average daily growth rate of 28 percent -- half again as much as the Kindle Fire during its peak sales from last year.

If Amazon's claims about the Kindle were true last year, then it may be the case that Apple is selling around 1.5 million iPad minis per week, which would add up to a healthy quarter for Apple. Moreover, Millennial doesn't think that the variety of competing tablets -- some at much lower price points -- will affect sales, nor does it see iPad mini sales "cannibalizing" full iPad sales.

The company believes the iPad mini will simply extend the market for tablets by creating a less-expensive but iOS-compatible version of the iPad. Users who already have one iOS device will be able to use the same apps and OS on the iPad mini, a significant advantage over getting an Android-based tablet. The iPad mini will also be seen as a good companion product to give to children and teens rather than the significantly more-expensive full-size iPad. The company believes that tablets such as the iPad mini are likely to steal more from PC marketshare than from larger tablets.

Millennial says the iPad mini's apparent success in the market confirms the consumer desire for different sizes of tablets, and encourages developers to make sure their apps can work at the most popular sizes. The $100 higher price for the nearly 8-inch product (compared to 7-inch competitors) doesn't appear to be a significant barrier, given the advantages (particularly for people who already own iOS devices) as well as the universally-praised fit and finish of the iPad mini compared to its rivals.

Unlike last year, Amazon has not released any figures on sales of its tablet line, though it is expected to remain one of the more popular options among Android tablet choices.

Apple's just not successful in business environments.... Right?

Just looking terrible for Apple.

Apple's iOS line holds dominant stake in phone, tablet activations

Premium enterprise email outfit Intermedia has released results of its poll of small- and medium-business smartphone and tablet activations, showing Apple as having a hugely dominant presence in both areas, particularly in tablets. While combined sales of Android phones may be significantly larger than that of iPhone alone, when it comes to business the results are lopsided in the other direction, with Apple accounting for 68.2 percent of phone activations and 92.6 percent of tablet activations.

The data came from 500,000 email accounts hosted by Intermedia with Microsoft Exchange, and the statistics cover activations from September to November of this year. Because of the large sample size, the data is considered to be an accurate representation of mid-sized business customers.

In the smartphone arena, Android was a distant second with 25.1 percent of activations, with BlackBerry at 4.1 percent and Windows Phone at 2.6 percent. The company said the results may have skewed somewhat in Apple's favor due to the launch of the iPhone 5 in late September, which caused a surge of activations that rose 22 percent above normal -- but did not change the fact that iOS smartphones dominated the options, according to AppleInsider, which first reported the survey.

In tablets, where Apple has always been dominant, the only surprise was that the Microsoft Surface, a very late entrant to the fray, has already registered a 2.1 percent presence. Though it was the smallest measurable presence among the competitors, the Surface has only been available since early November and is presently only available outfitted with the more consumer-oriented Windows RT rather than the more traditional Windows Pro. Surface tablets with Windows Pro are not expected to launch until January, and will be the only models that can run legacy Windows applications. That the Surface has appeared in the business survey at all suggests that the product may find a foothold in the business market, particularly if the other principally business-oriented tablet OS (BlackBerry 10) fails to regain its audience once it is released in late January.

In the tablet portion of the survey, Intermedia saw 92.6 percent of new activations coming from the iPad, while the BlackBerry took second place with 5.3 percent of activations, leaving Android far behind with only 2.3 percent of activations. The dearth of tablet-oriented apps has often been blamed for the low acceptance of Android tablets, but in this case an emphasis by Google and its developers on gaming over productivity apps is also likely to be a factor.

Apple's dominance in small- and medium-business penetration reflects its success in larger enterprise as well. Most if not all of the Fortune 500 companies have said they are evaluating or deploying iOS devices among their workforces, led mainly by the trend in IT to allow employees to either bring their own device from home or have the option of choosing what platform they prefer, both of which have given Apple a strong and seemingly unshakeable lead, at least for the past three years.

Kantar: Apple gets over half of US smartphone sales

updated 01:33 pm EST, Fri December 21, 2012

iPhone 5 sales boost Apple to 53.3 percent share

The phenomenal sales of Apple's iPhone 5 helped boost the Cupertino company to its highest ever share of US smartphone sales over the past 12 weeks. This according to Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, which released a new analysis of the US smartphone market over the past three months, finding that the release of the iPhone 5 caused Apple's share of sales to jump to 53.3 percent in the United States, and this largely at the expense of iOS' main competitor, Google's Android platform. Year-over-year, iOS sales share was up 17.5 percentage points, while Android's share dropped 10.9 points.

Apple's bump came also at the expense of Canadian BlackBerry manufacturer Research In Motion, which has struggled to retain users even as it prepares to launch the next generation of BlackBerry devices. Year-over-year, RIM saw its share of sales for the 12 weeks ending November 25 drop from seven percent to 1.4 percent. RIM and Android's share drops, taken together, account for all of the gain Apple saw over the twelve weeks.

Kantar expects December will see Apple making even further gains as the busy holiday shopping season is underway. While the iPhone 5 pushed Apple to a dominant position in the US market, chief rival Samsung still holds the top spot in the European market. Kantar has Samsung holding a 44.3 percent share across the "big five" European nations, with Apple taking second place at 25.3 percent.

Whoops!

Looks like Mr. Breeze's predictions haven't quite turned out as he thought Christmas would turn out in the tablet space...

Relevant portions:

The result confirms early surveys that shows that most demographics wanted an iPad or iPad mini this year (...) Apple's two tablet models and Amazon's Kindle Fire HD were the big winners in tablet activations that day

Sounds to me that someone is going to be eating crow this Christmas... unless they are too busy defending their egos.

Where's those two guys that predicted that Christmas sales would see a reversal of tablet sales? So far, Google's Android isn't even listed as a relevant percentage.

What I always love about these situations is that the "great prognosticators" who foolishly predicted doom and gloom in the short run (ie for this Christmas) by "predicting" how APple's market will contract, invariably pull a runner when these developments not only don't happen, but when the exact opposite (another record setting holiday sales result) happens.

I guess they don't like the taste of crow, and are too proud to comment and admit their failures - localguy, koolbreez, etc...

Just anticipating the dummy posse posting the usual "AAPL stock has dropped, AAPL Is doomed, hahahahahahahaha" BS -- all the while ignoring that not only is this in-line with what I said earlier (sell off to take profit, and avoid higher capital gains taxes on long-term investments next year), but also that the entire market is currently tanking because of fiscal cliff fears in the USA.

http://www.ipodnn.com/articles/12/12/28/genuine.fears.for.future.or.just.profit.taking.ahead.of.cap.gains.rise/

Pretty much still a great time to buy, and the stock will start picking up again in 3-4 weeks after Apple announces their holiday sales quarter results (any bets on how "terrible" those results will be?)

Oh hey, Apple will have their earnings call on January 23rd?

Any guesses how terrible they are poised to have been doing over the holidays? After all, according to Localguy that tablet share was going to be massacred by all those competitors who had "caught up"... right?
