Apple's shares swallow biggest loss in four years

By Ryan Vlastelica and Poornima Gupta

NEW YORK/SAN FRANCISCO | Wed Dec 5, 2012 6:10pm EST

(Reuters) - Apple Inc shares tumbled more than 6 percent on Wednesday, chalking up their biggest single-day loss in four years as fears grow about intensifying competition in the mobile device market.

The sell-off, fueled by a forecast by an influential research firm that the iPad maker is continuing to cede ground to rival Google Inc Android gadgets, rounded off a bleak 10 weeks for the most valuable U.S. company.

The stock was one of Wednesday's biggest percentage losers on the S&P 500, shedding $35 billion of market value as more than 37 million shares changed hands -- blowing past the company's average daily volume over 50 days of 21 million.

This is so funny, when the "antis" try soooooooo much, and fail soooooo hard.

Especially the old guy, who only comes out of the hibernation under his rock when he thinks he has some devastating 'news' about Apple.

55555!

For those not paying attention - for every one of those 35 million shares that were sold, you realize that SOMEONE BOUGHT THEM?

No? Didn't think so.

There will be a couple more dips before the end of the year, equally celebrated by you dorks for all the wrong reasons.

Myself, I enjoy the predicted dips as just another opportunity to buy AAPL (here's a hint: buy low, hold long time, sell high).

You should avoid personal attacks on people it's demeaning to both the debate and the company you defend, as well as yourself.

It's also nonsense to suggest everyone here is anti Apple.

I reproduced an article that predicted Apples problems might worsen.

And I am a very grateful Apple consumer, who still has yet to see anything better ( In ""my" opinion)

I also believe it has a long and creative role successfully in that market.

However, it's at best, Optomistic to assume other evolving players won't hurt their long held dominance, or impact the market share or value price.

But if you hold that view at least don't use personal attacks to nullify others who disagree.

It's significant that the above article by Expat showed the biggest single day loss in 4 years...and 6% is a big bump in the road... ( by anyone's standards)

Were you forstance an investor with one million dollars, that drop was 60 k

Sure highs and lows......

That same investor might double his or hers money in ten years time....

We will see how Apple goes....

Obviously, it is not alone anymore....

I didn't say "everyone" - it's obvious there's just a rather insignificant, albeit loud, small segment of 2-3 that qualify.

Next up, finally announced today, Apple will now be manufacturing select products in the USA - undoubtedly starting a trend that, once again, other computer manufacturers will attempt to copy.

While Apple has over 20 years experience with their factories in Northern California, and having honed their supply chain, this will simply mean that other manufacturers trying to copy this (once customers look for 'made in the USA') are bound to have their attempts cut into their profit margins, or force them to actually lose money.

The best example of the profit cycle, and how vicious it is, is to simply compare how much Samsung spends in marketing, per year, and breaking it down to cost per smartPhone. The net result is always that Apple makes a profit -- and the other guys, including Samsung, not so much.

The largest market in the world (far greater than the USA market by a long shot), and this deals with all smartphone sales, not just the expensive models.

Apple Share in China's Smartphone Market Q3 Slips below 10%

BEIJING, Dec 07, 2012 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) -- The share of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) in China's smartphone market hit below 10% in the third quarter, slipping two percentage points from the second quarter, according to a report issued by market research firm IDC yesterday.

According to data issued by IDC in October, Samsung is reckoned to have sold 56.3 million smartphones in the third quarter, taking up 31.3% of the global market and holding a safe lead. Apple sold 26.9 million smartphones and ranked No.2, with a global market share of 15%, not more than a half of Samsung's.

Meanwhile, Research in Motion Ltd. (RIM, NASDAQ: RIMM), ZTE Corporation (SZSE: 000063, SEHK: 0763) and HTC Corporation ranked from No.3 to No.5, with shipments of 7.7 million, 7.5 million and 7.3 million units, respectively. On the other hand, the champion of the past Nokia Corporation (NYSE:NOK), after losing the long-lasting top position, even dropped from the top five.

I hope you understand the term "selling short", and that one can buy stock later for sales now. Also brokerage houses buy stocks, and then resell them, taking a cut. They are not concerned with a stock's rise, or fall, only that they will sell the share, even if it is back to the corporation that issued it.

Your implication that SOMEONE BOUGHT THEM is very misleading in implying someone bought them anticipating a price rise. There are also those that buy, expecting the price to drop.

Most stocks, including Apple, are traded on margin, with the gamble on whether the stock will rise, or fall. Not all stock purchases are made expecting the stock to go up, or didn't you know this?

I know that - did you also know that you can look up the percentage of the types of transactions during a given sell period?

You're trying way too hard.
