Has anyone read The Tesseract by Alex Garland (same guy who wrote The Beach) ?
It is not an easy read but it is one of the most evocative books that I have ever read. It sums up Manila in a nutshell..not a place for the faint-hearted!
Anyone who has arrived at Ninoy Aquino Airport at 8.30 in the evening will know what I mean!

Having lived with both PI and Thai girls…have to agree with you DSBones. Lived in Manila for over a year a few years back and still find myself in Manila 3 or 4 times a month over night, I tend to find myself a lot more relaxed in BKK.
I’ve never had any trouble walking round BKK at night, can’t say the same in Manila, or Davao for that matter.
There are good places to go, my favourites are Malate for music and food, Green Belt for FL and Burgos Street for bars, but the aggravation factor is just to much. Even Gloretta shopping mall has metal detectors before you can enter.
As for the girls, DSB is spot on.
If you want someone for a long term relationship, who can adapt to a western life style, go for PI. If you want good sex and fun go for Thai.
Personally, I want good sex and fun…..if I wanted commitment, I’d go buy a dog.

I for one have arrived there at least 50 times at any time of the day and have no idea what you are talking about.
Personally, I love the how hectic it is. I just feel Manila flowing through my body as soon as I set foot there. I feel that Manila is much more “Asia” then sterile places like Singapore or KL. It all depends on personal taste, but I love the chaos. Makes me feel right at home.

i am right with hypershade onthis one! it makes a huge difference arriving in sing, kl or even hk those places are sterile!
once one does arrive in jkt, mnl or bkk it is pure energy -> pure asia!

Jakarta and Bangkok might be pure energy, but I think Ninoy Aquino Airport borders on chaos!

The point re. Ninoy Aquino that I was trying to make is this.
As soon as you go through immigration after arrival..everything is in your face. You have very little time to adjust. At most major airports there is an option to sit & gather your thoughts & get your bearing. You do not get this chance in Manila - there is no large public space in which you can remain anonymous for a few minutes.
Manila is one of the few airports in the world where I would try to meet people on arrival rather than let them sort it out themselves, particularly if they arrive after 6pm.
The place is disorganised & possibly intimidating to people who are not experienced travellers. There are very few facilities to assist & you are left to fend for yourself.
I do agree that the chaos is part of the charm but it's not what you want when you arrive for the first time!

I agree with many here...
I have been to PI mnay times and was/am/sorta married to a filippina. Even she is scared to walk around Manila after dark and still wary during the daytime.
The first few times I went there, it was OK, Never felt insecure. After the Peso dropped to 50-1US$ it appeared that the masses became a little more deperate. It was after this that I saw a difference in the way I was looked at when walking around and have been the target of a few scams (all failed). This may be a bit of a post-hoc argument, but it's my opinion.
Manila (PI in general) is not for the faint of heart. YOU MUST watch your back.
I mean... Even McDonalds has an armed Security Guard.

I totally agree with your opinion here. The catholic influence makes the girl's sexual behavior a bit unsophisticated. However, they are willing to learn and after some time of aparenticeship they become better. I also made the experience that some girls try to hide their experience as in their morals it is bad to show their skills (they want to become your girlfriend, not your mistress).
Besides the afore mentioned places, you might also consider the entertainment complex with a handful of agogo bars on domestic road (across the domestic airport, http://manilasexguide.com/manila_airportroad.html ) and the Filipino style bars on Airport Road and in Cubao ( http://manilasexguide.com/reports.htm ). The later are very sleazy and not so safe if you are a stranger and don't respect the Filipino attitude. If you comply with Filipino attitude and keep a low profile, you should do okay, though.
