Try the Wharney Hotel in Wanchai, opposite"The Old China Hand". Always good for a few LBFMs and plenty of expats to talk to. The "White Stag" further up the road is a good pub too. The Wharney would be around $70 a night and GF too

Harold444,

The toilets are pretty good in these hotels. I've never had a problem taking a dump in them, but the size of the rooms is small, so sometimes the smell (if not nice) can roam around the room.

Thanks for all the advice but unfortunately, I had already left when they were posted and could not get access until now.

I finally found a special offer at asiatravel.com for the IBIS Hotel in North Point at 380 HKD per night.
The North Point area is dead but the Hotel door is 50m from the subway and then 6-7 stations to Central as far as I remember.
The rooms are small but this is a real Hotel with the associated services, safe, etc. and not a guest house, which I found good value for the price.

I did not have the guts to go to ChunKing Mansions, which I knew from my travel guide (dorms?).

I found the best "regular" nightlife spot to be in Central on D'Aguilar Street with lots of pubs/bars/clubs on this steep road.

Cheers,
Latrell

I didn't get quite the deal Latrell did but the Stanford Hillview was about $450 HK a night and was very good. The rooms were small but good quality and I was out exploring HK most of the time by day and checking out Wan Chai at night.

No issues with laundry staff spoke good English it's just around the corner ( and up a steep slope) from the Empire hotel MTR bus stop. 5 minutes walk to Tsim Sha Tsui subway stop.

Best part is that being just off of Kimberly street it's super quiet at night. My last post in this thread has the link and I'd recommend it. GF too, took 3 Filippinas in all at the same time, no trouble.
