Have learned alot reading the posts on Cambodia in this section of forum. But still have a vision of PP being a hole-- fueled by expats (living in bkk or singapore and by so-so movies like City of Ghosts). Will likely have a job opportunity there and while of course will go and check it out before committing, am interested in hearing from any forum members that actually live in PP, as to how it compares with bkk in terms of expense, quality of life, transportation, nightlife (not as much it would seem), golf courses, etc. and anything else you think might be relevant.

thanks in advance.

Depends on what you like,

Phnom Penh is slower and offers far less action. It is much easier to get yourself in trouble and not as many places to hide. If you have money, like semi luxury and cleanliness it is not yet your kinda place. well not yet atleast.

If you like the wild side of life, uncertainty, and cheap sex and the slow pace of life and aren't the into drugs or binge drinking you might just love it here.

I personally love it in Cambodia and plan to spend many years there. My favorite part is the seedy, mysterious feeling it provides me. It is cheap and compact. I have to say that if I could live there I would have to escape now and again.

As for now, I only spend one month out of every four in Cambodia. When I return here to LOS I am so happy to be back, that lasts two weeks or so and then I need to get back to PP.

PP is not so far from it's old "off the rails" days...... it just provides a nice illusion that it is.

So, go spend a few months and decide for yourself. I expect within a month you would know if it was for you or not.

Best,

Barang, I have just spent two days in Phnom Penh and right away I can see that it is a place that I could fall in love with, but also why most people would hate it there and not want to stay.

My next visit will be a lot longer and I will be planning it as soon as I get home.

spent enough time in PP (but not lived here) to address the question.
prices are generally cheaper in almost every catagory except food. Better and cheaper food in LOS.
Sex is less abundant in PP than in BKK where much more options are available (think of all the MP's in BKK alone), but sex will be cheaper in PP.
Transportation, there is no public transport in Cambodia to speak of except renting mototaxi or motobike for own use. BKK is full of all the transport options of any major city (bus, subway, mototaxi, regular taxi etc)
In general, at nite, the streets will be much safer in BKK than in PP.
If you are into golfing, forget Cambodia and stick with LOS or elsewhere in Asia.

Your post sounds like you live the life of a prince, with your golf and such. You can live the life of a prince there,......... if you have the wealth of a prince to back you up. But since you have to work for your money I guess you do not have that wealth........ yet.
And like others said before. Cambodia is a 3rd world nation. It is dirty, dirty, dirty and under all that dirt they have some more dirt.
Healthcare is done by the local carpenter, all your aches and paines have a single remedie, a woodenbox made to size.
But if you are a prince that likes to live rough, then it could be your place. Powercuts are sometimes several per day while in my country having a powercut once in your lifetime is fairly common.
having said that, I love the people (especialy the women half) and I love the country, but I do not mind a bit of roughness and I do not live there, I just go on holiday there.

"as to how it compares with bkk in terms of expense,"
equal to cheaper

"quality of life,"
lower

"transportation,"
only mototaxi's, but real taxi's are now getting started, inbetween cities they have aircon busses.

"nightlife (not as much it would seem),"
true, but enough for one man to keep busy for several years.

"golf courses,"
i do not care for golf, so do not know, but since it is a luxury thing there are only a few compaired to Thailand.

So if all this is not your cup of tea, I guess that job is not what you want. But in that case sent me the joboffer, I would love it there. hehehehehehehe

Well I am only in day 3 in PP and while there are some intriguing aspects of the city, I can say I would never come back here again. It is so bad that I am shortening my trip by 3 days.

For a day or two as a tourist its ok. As someone said, it has a dark underbelly (which I don't mind) but it is a depressing city and only viable if you are an expat living an isolated life or fancy yourself more of the Pattaya underground type.

The P4P action is, imho lame. A number of small bar strips with overly pushy girls silently (or not) gathering around waiting for you to by them overpriced drinks. The bar fines are cheap at 4-7 USD and ST is 20-30. The local equivalent to Beer Garden or Gullivers reminds me of a bio-hazard.

When I am in the mood, I will shag just about anything but I can say of 100s of women I have seen, only 3 I would do. One I BF'ed and ended up having to kick her out of the room she was just so lame (later found out she took 20 out of my shirt pocket. The other 2 are not working girls and I don't have the energy to work at it. I know there are plenty of gorgeous Cambodian women.... I just did not see any working.

Add to that my wallet was lifted at a MP and they stole 200 USD... I felt something strange was happening when I was getting the massage when I tried to turn over the women tried to keep me on my stomach. I threw her off, got up, check my pants which were hanging on the wall and my wallet was gone. They had opened the door when I was on my face and lifted it and taken a bunch of money. I wised up before they could put it back in my pants and I slammed the door open and found my wallet on the floor outside the room.

I wont get into more details but if anyone is here, stay away from E16 Street 152 and most of the stuff along that area is bad news. There is nothing I can do as the cops here, like BKK are paid by these operators to they will do nothing.

Blatt (I think) said there is an abundance of nightlife.... Yes, as long as you want to see the same thing over and over again. Having walked hours the streets and been in at least 30 bars there is almost nothing unique or interesting. After you go to 2 or 3, they are all the same.

As others recommended, the Pickled Parrot is a good place... good food, nice people. Next door at the hotel bar, they seem to have a good time and not too pushy. But all the others I visited I either had a draft or walked out right away.

Frankly, if I could have flown out today, I would have.... I land tomorrow and first stop is Tulips.

EDIT IN... I liked Siem Reap and would certianly go back again but the only good thing here in PP is I can buy Valium otc to take the edge off this place gives me.

I wouldn't agree that it is a "shit hole", but PP is, admittedly, far more complicated and challenging than anywhere in thailand.

The stealing that visitingbkk experienced is bloody annoying and ever present. I can sympathize with his feelings because I have been there, more than once. And you definitely want to avoid the shady brothels in the center of town (of which there are fewer and fewer, but the ones that remain are if anything worse than the old ones. Not for the faint of heart. And leave all your cash at home.)

Still, there is something intriguing and alluring about the place that keeps pulling me back. It is hard to explain.

Unfortunately, most of the raw, down and dirty places like Sophies or Cyrcees have either changed or closed. They were the most interesting thing about PP during my first few trips there. Having a cluster of girls around you at the bar, all taking turns sucking you (as a means of enticing you into the back room), as you fingered the ones who weren't and sipped on your $2 whisky. Waiting them out was all part of the fun. And when you finally took one or two back into or up to the dingy rooms, the cost was negligible. So was the performance rating. But yes, the sucking and fingering at the bar was the real fun part, and that has now gone away it seems. Too bad. They "cleaned" up the best part, but the rest of the filth remains.

I still managed to have a great time in PP over New Years 2008. The scene is definitely quiet and limited. But the small bars can be great fun in a relaxed kind of way, and they are full of gems, IMHO. The problem I found was that the most beautiful girls were often not good to go, many of them virgins, who only drink and keep you company. But I still enjoyed the flirtation and little bit of making out they would allow. The innocence, in the midst of the darkness and danger, was charming.

Oh, and I like the vietnamese girls you can find there. They are often strikingly beautiful, with a different vibe about them.

Of course PP does not compare favorably to BKK, PTY, or pretty much anywhere in Thailand. It is dirty (it is not entirely unusual if a khmer girl has a bit of BO), annoying (lots of begging children), mildly criminal (the stealing that visitingbkk describes, and more), the food isn't as good, and the P4P scene is definitely smaller (comparable to Chiang Mai perhaps, with a bit more).

But it is different. And, underneath the dirt and grime and thievery of PP, there is also something incredibly mysterious and charming about the place. Of course, I can't help being fascinated by its bloody history and wonder at how it has managed to survive, even as it has.

I want to explore more of the country, beyond SR and PP. (By the way, I met one of the loveliest, most GFE khmer girls in SR. Picked her up in that odd little disco they had back then, where all the men and girls seemed to dance separately, but as couples... Anyhow, I still remember her fondly.) From what I have been reading in the papers though, I can't help wondering if Tourist Money hasn't destroyed the good parts of SR too.

All that said, I would gladly go back to PP for a visit anytime. I would make sure to balance it with a more relaxed, cleaner, more satisfying stay somewhere/anywhere in Thailand. But back I would go, because it is fascinating, and appeals to a monger like me with a taste for the dark side.
