Have lived and worked in Cambodia for the past 2 years, with no foreseeable end in site.
Office and house in Phnom Penh although I spend a lot of time in the provinces along the Thai border so do get to see alot of the country.
Some very valid points from Visitingbkk and also Quim, I would just add that it is not a shithole, just very very different to Bkk.
I find the P4P pretty dark and seedy here and much prefer Bkk, so do come over at least once a month to play in LOS. The flight schedules are pretty good for weekends out of country.
Whilst there are some beautiful Khmers, I much prefer Thai and can honestly say that in 2 years here I have only seen a handful of what I would class as really beautiful women. Most of these are true 'good girls' and as such are not good to go, alot of ground work and effort is needed.
PNP can be fun, can be cheap, just got to look around a bit and not come with any preconceived ideas that you will be getting the same as Bkk, then you will not be disappointed.

Quim: I wished I could have stated the case as eloquently as you just did. I like PP for all the aforementioned reasons plus the crumbling colonial French architecture. The spokes of a wheel city layout. The good coffee, wine and bread. Eating a meal worth $100/ head for $20. It fulfills my original imagination of seedy post colonial S E Asia. After 3 or 4 days however, the grime, and beggers, cripples, relentless children, incessant tuk tuk houndings, and nothing quite working right gets to me. Everybody's got a hand out. I usually head to Nam to get me some 2nd world, but I'm irresistibly drawn back and will hit PP again, instead of flying directly to BKK. I've waxed poetic, but, all in all it's got to be those amazing tits on the Khmer girls. I've yet to find a flat one no matter how skinny. Remarkable really. wj

I have to say that I found visiting Siem Reap to be interesting, albeit a lot of what could have been charm has been effaced by the ever present tourist traps - casinos, modern hotels, etc... and I found the prices in no way alluring, as most food etc was at western rates (or, close to them). We did luck out with a cool driver, who took us to some out of town food places, that were dirt cheap, and intensely tasty - just anywhere tourists congregate you'll find western pricing.
I will go back to explore some more, but as for p4p, I will pack my own lunch for the next trip, and bring my own girl from Thailand along for the ride. That would appear to be the best compromise.

Well I like a little intrigue and darkside as well but I find very little here that would ever draw me back again unless I revert to becoming a lawless asshole. On a different note I find it absolutely disgusting the 100s of RCAF (license plate) cars around town.... Lexus and BMW SUVs, Mercedes, etc., etc. With the level of poverty and oppression here, this blatant show of excess is truly a sad state.
There are very very few places I have traveled that I would never want to go back to. PP is right up there with Dhakar on my list of never again. I write this at the airport after trying to be fleeced again by the taxi driver then getting hassled by the immigration....
I look forward to going back to SR next month but for me, it is bye bye PP

I find those nooks and crannies rather intriguing, despite all the reasons to find fault with them. One can find such hedonism in the shadiest of places.

I've made this comment before, elsewhere here, but I have often thought about, during my travels outside of LOS, how Thailand spoils us in so many ways, and I am, for once, not talking about P4P "instant gratification", although that too.
No, I am talking about how safe and hasslefree it is, while most of the rest of the world is much less so. And PP no doubt has more than its fairly allotted share, but I do not think it ranks much above Vietnam on this score, and in terms of real danger, it is certainly outranked in my mind by Brazil and Mexico, to name just a few.
One must remember, while traveling in these other Asian countries, that they are not thailand, and to play safe. But at the same time, it would be unfair to constantly compare them, because, as I say, LOS spoils us, lulls us, enfolds us in its delicious security blanket like a newborn babe.
So, without wanting to minimize visitingbkk's annoyance or his experiences, I want to echo some other comments to this effect, that acting like you are in LOS, or comparing PP to LOS, will definitely undercut your enjoyment of the place. You have to take PP on its own terms, and play by its rules. I still maintain that if you do that, you can have a lot of interesting times there.
But if you are seeking only easy, laid back pleasures and clean sheets, instant, guaranteed gratification, and no hassle, then go to BKK or PTY.

As always, to each his own....
Personally I love places like Delhi (shithole as some may call it), Cairo, Istanbul... all reasonably "iffy" places to play. In Asia, after hitting Burma, VN, Laos, KL, JKT and many others, no where have I had as much trouble as PP and I would place Hanoi or SGN way below PP in terms of real danger.
I agree with Quim to not compare BKK with other places. I never do as each places offers some truly unique and wonderful experiences. Like I said before, for a day or 2 as a tourist it is ok.... but after that..... go to SR, SGN or any other place on the globe.

While I've certainly enjoyed reading this thread, but I have to admit that it has left me a wee bit slack-jawed. I've always thought of Bangkok as a third world shithole, so I doubt that I will be visiting PP anytime soon.

Bangkok is a 12-14 millions megalopolis. Phnom Penh is (fast growing) 1 million village.
10 years ago, Bangkok was a megalopolis. 10 years ago, Phnom Penh was starting from zero. And in 10 years, Phnom Penh has achieved a lot. That is how you need to understand Phnom Penh. Not only by pointing out the misery, dirt or the beggars you can still find in many places.
Phnom Penh is 30-40 years behind Bangkok in term of development.
So do not try to compare what is not comparable.
Phnom Penh will for sure not leave you indifferent. You will love or hate; no in between.
Phnom Penh is not a shithole and it has a lot to offer. But you need to leave your Bangkok expectations behind.
There is a P4P in Phnom Penh. Actually my best experiences remain (by far) in Phnom Penh. I spent 8 years living in PP and now in BKK for the last 5 years.
