OK- TGF has never been out of Thailand (shes from Ubon- and we have gone to Pattaya, Chaing Mai, Phuket) - but always wanted to see Angkor Wat

Let's start with Bangkok Airways- they pay off both governments, so have 4 round trips a day and no one else can fly the route from BKK- -- how does 27,000 baht for 2 coach tickets round trip- 45 minute flight- sound

You get there and must get visa- $60 for two--- charge to enter country $50 for two- charge to leave country $50 for two - charge for 3 day pass to see sights-$80 for two -- and in each case the lines are close to 1/2 an hour--

From here it gets better- the Victoria Hotel (5 star) was $160 a night- but what a pool, what a breakfast, what a room- stay at the Meridian or the other 5 stars and you might as well be anywhere- this has a real sense of place

You really must get tour guide and driver -which is $60 /day- I found one who spoke Thai- so didn't need two guides for my English challenged love--- you need 3 full days

See the floating village of Chong Khneas its 10 km south - but people live there- its not just a touist sight--you rent a boat ($30 for two- with your guide) Stop for a singa and tiny shrimp at a restaurant the boat passes -

See Angkor Thom, Bayon Temple, Prasat Kravan, Bantay Kdei as well as Angkor- but TA PROHM (the temple somewhat destroyed by the trees growing in, around, and on top of it- will take your breath away

Allow $90 for two sets of photo development on your return to Bangkok-- cheers

You can do it FAR cheaper than that. Though, if that is how you like to do it, then why not.

What is this $50 dollars for entering and exiting the country? That like an airport tax or something?

farangman- yes an airport tax---- and as far as cheaper- the only part that could be- is the hotel and losing most of a day going through Phnom Penh or taking a bus-

You could get a bus to the thai border, then a taxi (for between 30 and 60 USD for the cab) from the border to Siem Riep. You could stay in a guest house for under 10 USD a night. As you say, you'd 'lose' most of the day - though the road from the border to Siem Riep is quite an experience! - but you'd save a thousand US dollars or so. You could hire a bicycle for $1 and cycle around Ankor Wat, which is a lovely way of doing it - though, again, I agree with you that there is a lot of value in having a guide (whose price you could negotiate down if you so chose). And you could use a digital camera and not get print outs.

I really want to stress that I am not in any way suggesting any of the money you spent was a waste - if that is how you like to travel and are able and happy to spend the money to do so, then that's your thing, and nice review you posted too. Just saying for the benefit of anyone reading who may be thinking about seeing Ankor: don't be put off by those prices, there are other ways of doing it!

I was looking originally at the option of going overland or by vehicle to Siem Reap starting on the Thai side -- and nearly every report I read discussed it as being the most dangerous / unpleasant experience ever, so I gladly chose to fly via BangkokAir. I have had generally pleasant experiences with BangkokAir, and this was no exception. A roughly 45 minutes flight, we arrive in Siem Reap, stayed at the Golden Orange Hotel

http://www.goldenorangehotel.com/

Which was a very pleasant experience, $30-$40 a night for the rooms, and we retained a guide every day that took us pretty much anywhere we wanted to go (cost us $50 a day, which we later found out that we overpaid double what he expected, but since we monopolized his time to the tune of 18 hours a day, we didn't feel we overpaid).

The way I see it -- you can always cut corners and 'save' money, but what do you really 'save' if you trade the 'saved' money in lost time - particularly when you are on vacation.

D. DUCK- I read the same reports about cab from border-- the answer would be for Bangkok Air to not pay off the governments and to charge the same as it does for similar flight times in it's system- (my TGF flies to BKK from Ubon Ratchathani and the one hour flight round trip is 3500 baht --not 13,500-- on Air Asia)

But thats not the point- I live for my now 3 trips a year to Bangkok- in that 10 days I can not waste a second-

And about the hotel- I get a real kinky rush when my TGF (who's home can only be described as a board attached to 4 poles- dirt ground floor- tarps for walls- no bed) sees a place that makes her wet her pants-

It was the same at the Sheraton pattaya- or when her first wave (she had never seen one) hit her in the face in Phuket

Having lost more than half of my money in the market- this doesn't come easy- but damn- im counting days till my next trip (73)

PS does any one know how to make the link above" blue " so it can be clicked on??

Well, if I had 10 days three times a year, I'd take the plane too.

Though I might take the taxi once, just for the experience. It is not what you might call a pleasant experience - but it is one you can dine out on for months.

for those that say the taxi from border to siem reap is an experience may as well liken it to sliding down a hill in a blizzard....no control and totally at the mercy of some f***-wit driver that seems to feel that passing two other vehicles with zero visibility (because of all the dust thrown up by the trucks ahead of us) is a good idea!

then, of course, there's the trip from siem reap to phnom penh...a little better road, but just a bad driving!

we stayed at the Chenla Guest House... $15/night. big rooms. pretty receptionist. free internet. would probably stay again.

I took the Bangkok to Aranyaprathet minibus/taxi from Poipet to Siem Reap trip last week and most of the road is new, smooth and 100% better. The one section of the road that was still rocky, dusty and shitty was only a few miles long but visibility was reduced to inches by big trucks in front of us (the driver didn't change his speed) and we got two flat tyres in ten minutes. One was f***ed. Thankfully the other just needed some air and it got us to where we were going.

Takes about eight hours including sorting visas out.

I thought it was great, but then when I took an hour to fly from Pnom Penh to Bangkok yesterday, reading a book, enjoying the aircon and relaxing I realised that people invented aircraft for many reasons and all of them are good.

The Heart of Angkor guesthouse is $12 per night, a couple of minutes walk from 'Pub St' and excellent value. Clean, nice wooden floors and we got three double beds. Free internet downstairs and free wifi. No hard sell techniques from the staff that we experienced in Sawasdee Angkor Inn.

I doubt I will be heading back to Siem Reap anytime soon, but if I did, I would stay there again.
