Buying lady drinks is ok, but what I absolutely cannot stand is the watered down sh_te they give the girls, masquerading as a drink. In some cases, it's not even alcohol, just sprite or something. And to charge a premium for that....is just downright fvcking wrong. You get that sort of 'shady' stuff happening a lot in a bar where the girls are contracted to the place, whereas in a place like GT, it's usually all above board.

Last October, I was sitting in the Ava Pub talking with a girl I've bar fined a couple of times and I noticed she was drinking orange juice, a very small glass of orange juice. I would say it probably wasn't 4 oz. of juice, if it was that. I looked at the chit to see I was being charged 150 THB for that glass of orange juice. At the then current exchange rate that was $3.75 US for 4 oz. of orange juice. In New York I wouldn't have been surprised, but BKK is NOT New York. What the hell, in Tokyo it probably would have been $7.50. Last time I was in Tokyo a cup of coffee was $5.00.

I wont buy LDs unless they are alcoholic.I prefer to slip the girl 50b than to pay 120b for coke or orange juice. Personally I wont stand for bill padding and other seedy practices but what do you expect in these nightlife places. They are on the make and customers are often drunk and they feel like they can take a chance and rip you off. That is the nature of the seedy nightlife industry and not just in Thailand either.

Instead of LD's I prefer to tip the girls if they stay to talk for a while. At least in the gogos you can just tell the girl that instead of a Ld you will tip her. Usually they are fine with that, from 1 LD they usually get something like 40 or 50 Baht. If girls like a cocktail or Beer I happily pay for that. These little glasses of coke or Fanta are just some sort of tip anyway only the Bar takes also a cut, but I think in PP or NEP they just let the girls do what they prefer, or at least it seems. Is it similar at the Bars on Soi 33 or are the Bars more into getting the girls to have them LD's bought. Are the girls allowed to sit with you if maybe after 1 LD you d'ont buy them anymore but tip them instead, which would actually be better for the girl (depending on the amount of course) but not for the Bar.

This depends on the bar, on the girl and you. In BluBBQ, I have seen a patron sit and talk to a girl for 45-60 minutes, no drink, no tip (that I saw). BluBBQ is very, very low-key. On the last trip, in Santanta or The Office, I saw the LDs come fast and furious. YMMV depending on the bar, what you look like, what they look like, are you fun to talk to, how busy is the bar, etc. No matter what, you have the final word, though, just say "no, sorry". No one is forcing you to buy drinks for girls you do not want to buy for, and no one is forcing you to buy a 2nd or 3rd drink for a girl

What the hell, in Tokyo it probably would have been $7.50. Last time I was in Tokyo a cup of coffee was $5.00. Apparently you guys continue to miss the fact that you are not paying for the drink, but for the "companionship." As much as you would like to believe it, the girls are not sitting with you just because of your fine physique and pleasant conversation and the bar is not in business to provide a discount drink service. They could (as some venues do) choose to provide drinks at a standard rate and charge you a time based fee for the company of the lady. However, these bars provide you the illusion of just buying a drink. The fact that you are too clueless to realize this and take it too seriously is your own fault. If it's at all shady it's only because there are people like you guys who completely misunderstand the economics of the situation. Really, tell me where in New York you can find a bar that serves you a $4 orange juice and provides you the company of a girl who will giggle at your inane chatter and doesn't mind you putting your arm around her and squeezing her thighs. Can't you find anything worthwhile to get worked up over?

Why is it that when the Thai pull a scam like this or some bar girl lies in your face, you are not suppose to react? You are not suppose to call them on their behavior. You are suppose to just let them get a way with it and pretend everything is just fine. It is like being around spoiled kids that you tolerant because they are your employer's children, or your brother's kids. You are saying that we should NOT call them on it? What should I have done? Ah, gee miss mama-san, big smile, I know you are a liar and a thief, but, that is OK, here, why don't I just give you my money clip and you just take what you think is fair. Is that OK? This line of thinking is why, and why Thailand will always be, a backwater, 3rd world country.
Several people have accused me of being as self-righteous and indignant as you appear to me now. I wonder if I've mellowed or you just really are significantly further down the spectrum than even I am. Well, the problem with your philosophy is that you're going to find that 99% of Thai people (and probably 99% of the population of any western big city) are "thieves" and "liars". By making a huge deal out of minor incidents you can no longer differentiate the really bad characters. Did I say you should just gleefully pay the fee? No. But you've given no indication that you politely pointed out that the fee was not explained to you beforehand. Save your ranting and raving for when you've been seriously screwed and that the manager is completely unwilling to help you out. I once had a clerk in a hotel photo shop grossly overcharge me and when I gave her a questioning look, she said, and I quote, "Oh, I gave the last man too much change." How is this different than what you're doing? You obviously have a chip on your shoulder for all the times a shopkeeper or waitress has tried to cheat you out of a few baht and now you take it out on every other shopkeeper or waitress (since you know for certain that they're all out to screw you).
