Giving the girl a tip based on how much of each lady drink she would normally pocket is only half the battle and in some cases none of it as there are clubs and bars where the girls don't get a cut of the lady drink at all.
You would also have to consider how much the girl might get cut by missing quota (if she has one). Some place cut salary by each lady drink below quota, other places have a flat penalty of hundreds or thousands of baht even if the girl misses by a single drink.
Once you understand just how varied the number of compensation schemes are -- once you factor in base salary, lady drinks, bar fines, quotas, short penalties, bonuses for overs, etc. -- you can start to understand why the girls behave so differently in different places.
In short, go with the flow and buy the lady drink. Or commit to carrying around a calculator and a 10cm thick binder with the compensation schemes for all the bars so you can be sure you're doing the right thing by the girls.
If you really have no clue then just go along with whatever the bar policy seems to be. But that is rarely the best thing for you and for the girl. The idea of girls being forced to drink (especially alcohol) in order to get paid is repugnant to me. Insisting that the girl drink alcohol, just so you get your money's worth is petty and inconsiderate. I don't have a problem with guys who are trying to create a party atmosphere and when that is my goal, I might also insist on alcohol. But if I walk into a bar and intend just to have one drink and chat with a cute girl I couldn't care less whether she is drinking Johnny Walker Black, Mekhong or coloured water.
My only standing argument with the lady drink process is when the girls' drinks are priced differently than when sold to the punter. There's no "sensible" justification for a Heineken for me costing 105 and a Heineken for a girl costing 150.
How can they "sensibly" charge 105 baht for a Heine when it only costs them 20 baht?
The bars have to pay for the overhead (including the salaries of the girls) somehow. They are simply trying to optimize their profits and find a model that works for their customers (different bars have different models). I find this more transparent than charging the same amount and watering down the drinks (since that seems to confuse and piss off various simple-minded individuals).
This is only a problem if they don't clearly post the cost of a lady drink up front.
As you said, if the model doesn't work for you, just move on and find another place that fits your style.

my 2 cents.
I also don't have a problem if the girl drinks water, colored water or alcohol, just as long as they don't try passin' if off as an alcoholic beverage. I don't think it is in the best interest of the establishment anyways to have their assets = females.. drunk/tanked. I certainly would not want to sit with a female that has already had one too many drinks.
As for the process, it makes sense. The establishment knows they can make a higher margin by chargin' more for ladies drinks then customer drinks. I mean how many drinks can a customer in general consume, compared to have many they can buy for the ladies.
And yes, I would rather they change different prices then charge the same price for some watered down garbage.

Lady drinks are a scam, period.
Whether you're the customer or even a lady who likes having a real gin and tonic.
One cannot fault the bars for coming up with the lady drink scam, but recognising that it is a scam is one way to ensure that you're not being taken, you're just playing along (but only when it suits your objectives).
Hopefully, some of the dinosaurs who ruled this board a couple of years ago will recognise this as an important distinction.

LDs are not a scam at all.
I suspect that a good 80% of punters are perfectly well aware that LDs are a disguised charge for monopolising a hostess' attention and don't feel 'taken' at all. The bars could put a stop-watch on you and charge you directly for her time instead, but then P4P in LOS is a relatively subtle and civilised business. That's precisely why many of us prefer it.
The bars provide venues for you to hook up with girls. Not many of them make much money. If you object to the set-up, there's nothing to stop you hunting for FLs elsewhere.
As for the alcohol thing, this is just nuts. You may be out to relax and have fun, but the BGs are at work - and it doesn't take much for the average TG to get smashed. Even those who enjoy a drink usually pace themselves very carefully. Who wouldn't in their shoes?

I dont mind the concept of lady drinks. Why not? Its up to you, yes? how much you pay and for what. If you feel there is a problem, then just get out and try next door.
I always ask what the charge is, and for who. Both from the mamasan and the girl, and I usually check what she is drinking.
Some bars I have spent 2 minutes in, and will NEVER go back, others I have spent half an hour in and felt the girls were too pushy, others I have spent lifetimes in, and go back every week.
Depends if I feel ripped off or not - both for me and the lady.
The office even has the charges listed in the lavatory on the wall for everyone to see - now thats honest and open!

Anyone who thinks that P4P in Thailand is a 'relatively subtle and civilised business' is obviously a relatively subtle and civilised kinda individual, I guess.
Unlike the kind who like to cut to the chase. (And I suspect that includes a hell of a lot more than 80% of punters.)
I find the karaoke concept much more transparent and up front:
You pay for your bottle/drinks and the girls company by the hour (1 hour minimum).
No more paying an exorbitant sum for a cola and having to understand, you poor ignorant tourist, that you're actually paying for her company.
Lady drinks are a scam. In fact, they're such a good scam that most people won't realise or even suspect it.

i rather pay thb 80-150 for a lady drink and can easily entertain 1, 2, 3 or more girls and replacing them without being charged for thb 200-800 for each of their company by the hour! for sure rather uneconomic!

Well, perhaps I should have said that P4P in LOS 'can be' a relatively subtle and civilised business. Or full frontal for cut-to-the-chasers. As transparent or opaque as you want it to be, but not usually at the same venue.
Just a matter of finding your own preferred comfort level, then patronising places which give you the set-up you want. No point in dumping on places which give other people the set-up they want.
At least in LOS you have a wide range of options.
