In general, I don't think Soi 33 is geared towards tourists - and isn't what most tourists (newish tourists anyway) are looking for. Certainly not essential to check it out on a 1st or 2nd trip.
That said, it can still be a useful place for anyone to kick off an evening - especially if you're sick of shouting over loud music or dislike huge booze-barns like GT. It's not high-roller-only territory before 9pm.

Sheesh! Obviously, a lot of you guys love the Soi 33 concept bars.
So is it LDs you are ranting against, Soi 33 you are ranting against or just overpriced LDs? It's really hard to follow your supposed arguments if you're not even bothering to keep that clear.
As far as Soi 33 goes, I guess the bottom line is that what you like is the one and only right way to enjoy nightlife in Bangkok. God forbid someone else should pay a little extra to enjoy the company of girls who are dressed nicely and act more refined. Or that someone should choose to pay a premium on the BF for having a girl that isn't screwed by two different cheap, dirty bastards every night.
If all you can afford are the cheapest of whores or if you want to wander the streets until 3am searching out the best bargains, then I guess there's nothing wrong with it. Just don't tell me how I should spend my money.

On my last trip to Bangkok, my TGF and I stopped in a bar on Soi 33 called Mojos. It is a bar that has live blues bands every night and the bands we saw were downright excellent, especially the acoustics! It's not a girlie bar, but is a great place to take your BG if you want a change of scenery or enjoy live blues music. Just a heads up to anyone who cares...

I agree about Mojo's, it is a great spot for listening to live music. Went a few months ago with a girl, it was great. A few girls there but prob. not a place to go hunting.

Right, you've repeatedly stated that anyone who enjoys the Soi 33 bars (which are total scams) has "more money than brains" unless they've found some way to subvert the system.
You refuse to accept that there are people who might prefer that environment over gogos or whatever the hell else it is you are advocating as anternative. And that those people are willing to pay extra for it. To you those people are fools and idiots. Oh, but you're not making a judgement or anything.

I never said that, now you're the one making assumptions. There are lots of fine people with brains and/or money who don't like Soi 33 for varying reasons. But I don't mind calling people "broke losers" if they are going to constantly whine about other people who have more money and are (in the "broke losers" inflated opinions) wasting it.
I'm not going to condemn you for haggling a short time down to 500 baht, but I don't expect you to bitch at me if I choose to pay 2000 or even 5000.
Just stick to the facts and let people make their own informed choices on where they want to visit.

Well, there are enough bars/discos that don't just survive, but thrive without levying such charges. This is not to say that they are cheap but it is a lot easier to justify the cost. CM2 is but one example, the soi 7 beer garden is another.
First off. I'm not trying to advertise the Soi 33 area or even g-clubs.
Secondly, we are talking about lady drinks in general.So, I think you need to compare apples to apples and oranges to oranges.
A dance club is not the same an g-club or karaoke club. Infact, go go, Mp, G-Club, Bar, dance Club and karaoke are all different.
I'm not a financial guru, but they all have different R.O.I's / revenue and expenses.
The one similarity between all these places is the fact that drinks have the highest margin out of anything else. They purchase a coke for x and then mark it up probably 5x. Mix drinks / hard alcohol, I'm sure have the same type of mark-up, while beer is around 2-3x.
Look no further then the memberships at the clubs. You get a certain amount of bottles of liquor, as well as lady drinks and room rentals for a fixed price. All those items have huge mark-ups for the establishments as well as in many cases their is a time limitation on all of the items above.
Also remember that time is money. So the more time you spend in the establishment takin' up the girls time, but not ordering anything is lose income for that place and for her. Hense the lady drinks. It provides a way the establishment can safe guard against lost income while still allowing the client/customer freedom.
Would you rather they just put an egg timer in front of you and every 5 minutes charge you an fixed amount.
Or
tell you that you for every 30 minutes in our establishment you must spend x amount of money. You can spend it on drinks or a lady, but if you don't spend the total amount before you leave you just pay them the difference. This would ensure that the establishment is guarded against freeloaders and the patrons would know exactly what they need to spend while they are in the club.
I would rather be given the opportunity mingle and buy a females a drink for her company and then move on if I'm not interested.
And contrary to what many believe, owning a club in Thailand is not easy money. It's tough business and lady drinks is a steady stream of income for them.
