Closing Times To Be Debated

Next Tuesday the cabinet will consider a proposal by out going minister Purachai Piumsombun that all entertainment venues and retail outlets should stop serving alcohol at 11pm.

The proposal is supported by deputy commerce minister Prachai Maleenont who was yesterday quoted as saying ‘This government was elected on its principles regarding moral values and its support for the poor. This government will protect young people from the vices of gambling, drinking and prostitution. If Thailand is serious about becoming a first world economic power, it is important that everybody is in bed by midnight.’

The proposal is thought to enjoy the support of the PM, Thaksin Shinawatra, who is concerned about the effect of late night revelry on the economy. Thaksin does not drink alcohol, rarely attends parties and retires to bed every night before 11pm. His former adviser and confidant, Sanoh Thienthong, issued a statement earlier today clearly showing his dissatisfaction with the new guidelines.

‘If the Prime Minister doesn’t want to show up at my birthday party that is his business. He has come every year for the last five years but the party has always finished before 1.00am. I enjoy his company and his wife, Khunying Pojamarn, has won our fancy dress contest three times. I support the PMs stance on Buddhist values but I feel people should be allowed to stay out late. I find that many business deals are concluded on friendly terms in restaurants and pubs after midnight.’

Party list Chat Thai MP Chuwit Kamolvisit is the most vocal opponent of the plan. He is planning to arrange a march of over 5000 employees from the entertainment industry to Government House next Saturday. Chuwit believes that early closing will be detrimental to both the economy and tourism.

‘Thailand has a global reputation for massage and massage parlors that will be irredeemably hurt by the proposal to close entertainment venues early. There are over one million people employed by the industry and this proposal threatens their livelihood. What does the Government expect these people to do? Lie on their backs all day?’

K.Purachai has repeatedly said that he would not be swayed by what he described as ‘vested interests’ and believes that his proposal has the support of the vast majority of Thai people.

‘I am not prepared to listen to K.Chuwit. Why does he only care about himself and his businesses? Early closing will help the Thai economy, reduce energy consumption and our dependence on oil imports. Many foreign families are afraid to come to Thailand on holiday because they believe the country supports prostitution and other vices.’

If the proposal for early closing is approved by the cabinet next Tuesday, the matter will be discussed when parliament reconvenes at the end of the month. A spokesman for the government said that they hoped to implement early closing laws by the beginning of June.

The PM's hypocrisy is beyond my comprehension. He is a prime example of somebody living in his own world – and he is ruling a country. Quite dangerous, if you ask me.

Chairman Thaksin aka 'Tax-the-Sin' wants Thailand to be just like Singapore so you better put that chewing-gum away. This mentality is also prevalent amongst the IMF and the World Bank who give Thailand the money. Which in fact means that the same mind set can be expected World-wide.

What the fools don't realise that with the effect of the Tsunami and early closing (people are on holiday right ?) They will probably kill their main source of income. There are other places in the World to visit.

Thaksin & Co should focus on the south of the country because that is where the real problems are to be found.
