There is a lot to do at night besides p4p.
Most people expect to be able to stay up and have fun at night when they are on a holiday they have saved money for all year.
Earlier closing times will only increase the perception that Thailand is only for prostitution. People see that the only thing to do in Thailand is to take a hooker back to your room early, but people that are not interested in this have no options for night time entertainment. This is what all my friends not interested in prostitution that have visited Thailand have gone home thinking, and have told to their friends.

I am saying that tourists are fickle and don't like being dictated to what time they go to bed.
After all they are on holiday and want to forget about clock-watching. My comments are nothing to do about P4P. Chairman Thaksin has a bee in his bonnet about it.
The sex-industry is 90+ % for Thais and not tourists.

I was at Nana last Wednesday, Thursday & Friday, most of the Bars closed at 1am, a few turn the exterior lights off but kept enough on inside to make it interesting. Very much in a state of flux at th moment IMHO!

I have the feeling closing hours are strictly enforced with the current powers that be. With a corrupt, hypocritical monk as PM I don’t see that changing any time soon. Even if he passes a bill to close bars and clubs at 11pm, people will obey, as it is better to make less money, then none at all (i.e. when they close your place down). Q is the obvious example that comes to mind: they turn on the lights at 0055 and start pouring the drinks in plastic cups while asking people to leave so they don’t get into trouble.
Where I come from bars close when the last customer leaves. Same here in the PI - in the majority of the places at least.

Mystique is regularly closing past 2.00am and after 3.00am on Fridays (should shut at 1.00am). Narcissus (should shut at 1.00am but has always managed 2.00am) is now regularly going on to 2.30+ at weekends. Marine 2 in Pattaya is now open weekends until 4.00am. Taipan in Phuket (at one stage closing at 1.00am) is now open daily until 4.00am. Etc. Etc. Etc....And of course a lot of the afterhours places have re-opened.
Incidentally the PM might be 'corrupt and hypocrytical' but he has never been a monk to the best of my knowledge.

I was merely *comparing* him to a monk, based on an article you posted stating that he doesn’t go to parties and is in bed before 11pm everyday.

I am aware of that- because I am present at most of them. But, strictly speaking, these places are still illegal, right?
I am referring to a climate where a bar can stay open till the morning without having to pay the police or constantly having to look over their shoulder. A climate where there is no need for “late night places”.
