Most ladyboys will admit if asked, most girls will laugh if you ask them. Either way, if you stick to "safe" venues, you'll be oay - just avoid tall, Amazonian, stripper-like 'girls' - essentially avoid the kind of look you will see in most strip clubs in the US, and you'll do fine. After a while you will develop LB-Radar.

You for the most part won't have any problems with ladyboys. You won't be frequenting the places they hang out after the good Doc explains about that on your tour. Before the tour stick to the gogos, and maybe the soi 7 beer garden if you want some afternoon freelancer activity. The beer garten on soi 7 does not allow ladyboys, so there you are safe from them. There are only a very few clubs on Soi Cowboy that allow ladyboys, then if the girl is dancing on stage she most likely is not a ladyboy. Just ask. Ladyboys are into perfection so you will constantly see them inspecting themselves with their oversized mirrors. If someone doesn't talk with, or go with them they think it has to have something to do with how they look so out comes the mirror. This perfection obsession spills over to them looking too good, and over emphasizing their actions. They try to cover up the normal imperfections most real girls have, and they don't have kids. Another thing to look at is their hands. There is no surgury to shorten the fingers. There is surgury for just about everything else though, including shaving off the adams apple, but nothing to shorten the fingers. If you do not have a need for the best looking girl you can possibly find then you won't have problems with ladyboys. To test yourself go to "Obsessions" in NANA Plaza on the second floor I think it is, and try to pick out the ladyboys from the real girls. You will have a pretty low success rate. In any of the bars/gogos you can ask the server, or mamasan, owner, or manager (some of them are ladyboys), if the one you are interested is a ladyboy. they will tell you the truth as they do not want bad publicity. None of the BJ bars listed here hire ladyboys so you are safe in them too. Your hotel is ok to have laundry done at, but as has been mentioned they are expensive. The alternatives are on some of the side sois off Sukhumvit at usually bt30-bt50 a kilo, with some now charging by the piece in that area. This usually includes ironing, but some are now charging extra for this in the Sukhumvit area. It does not happen to often, but they have been known to loose clothes, even in the hotels. Most of the laundry services do not speak much English so be clear with them how many pieces you give them, and not just how much it weighs. Two days for either is the norm, give them laundry before noon, and get it back the next day. Same day is extra cost, but only if in by noon, or earlier with some of them. Your security is important, and what you carry on you contributes to how secure you are. When you get here, and check into your hotel, they will make a copy of your passport. Have them make an extra copy for you, and a copy of your visa stamp immigration gave you when you got here. These copies are ALL you ever carry with you for ID. You do not need, and absolutely should not, carry your passport with you in Bangkok. The copy will work for anything you want to do, including changing TCs. On this trip you are not going to be doing anything you will need your passport for, other than entering, or leaving the country. The only time you might carry it with you is if you go to Pattaya, or somewhere else outside of Bangkok, and not on a tour, and only for convenience as any hotel you do check into will need to see your passport as it is the law, but this is the only time on your planned trip you will need it. If you wear jeans they usually have a watch pocket that this folded up copy of your passport fits into. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO REASON FOR YOU TO CARRY A BILLFOLD, NONE. A billfold is a target for the pickpockets that do operate in Bangkok. You basically want no bulge in your clothing except for your di....well you get the idea. The only other thing you carry on you besides the passport copy at night is big bills in one front pocket, and small bills in the other front pocket. There is no reason what-so-ever you should have any CC, ATM card, or money other than Thai baht on you at night, none. In the daytime there are a very few exceptions to this, but very few as in going to change TCs, or get more money from the ATM. Do not carry more than bt5000 on you ever, unless you have already priced something you are going to buy beforehand. There is no reason to carry more than this around at all. You are not throwing the party for everyone so no need to carry what a Thai considers a large sums of money around with you, and more than a few thousand baht is huge sums to most Thais you will come in contact with. If you are renting a girl for the whole night, or even short time, you have enough money on you for a few drinks, food, and short time cost a few times that night, or if you bring a girl back you can pay her in the morning from your safe when she takes a shower, or she will follow you to the ATM in the morning no problem, just do not tell her this until in the morning. You do not want to have enough money on you to be a target to be robbed, but you do not want to tell them you are cheap either, just say "NO" if they want something expensive. They will not hate you for it. It is a big game in this respect. 10k baht on you makes you a target if you are not careful because you will be drinking, and hopefully excessively with company, so you do not want to be taken advantage of by having large amounts of money on you. You will still have a wonderful time, you just won't be the one throwing the party for all of them, just the select few you choose. I have been involved with the police on two different occasions, one involving a known club being blanket drug tested, and my copy of my passport has never been an issue. I have cashed TCs using my passport copy without a problem too. Your real passport is worth about bt80,000 to a thief, with them being available if you need one for about bt150,000 now. A billfold creates a bulge, and is a target. Do not carry your money in a billfold then pull it out to pay for things, this makes you a target, especially if you drink, and pickpocketing by the pros happens so fast you will not know it happened until later when you go for your billfold. A professional pickpocket can hit any pocket on your body if the reward is worth the risk, or made easy. The ladyboy wickpockets have pretty much been eliminated along Sukhumvit, but still keep your hands in your money pockets if you are aproached, or go to your pockets immediately if you are bumped into. These will keep you as safe as can be while you are here, and playing at night drinking. The rest is just being somewhat street smart, and knowing prices of thinks. You are going to have a blast, and you can plan on that.

Oy! I forgot to ask a question about tips. Specifically for three different scenarios. First, for TRADITIONAL Thai Massages, what are the decent but not too much amount? This is very important because I probably will get MORE TTM than the soapies or oilies... Second, do they tip at restaurants in Thailand? And three, do you tip the girls you're with BEYOND the 2000 for LT type thing, if they are just okay? Obviously if they cause me to fall in love with them, they deserve a tip, but if it's just business transaction, do you still tip them? FOUR BLEEPING DAYS! Until start of the trip. So looking forward to this, I am almost losing sleep. Going to get so many massages (TTM) the first couple of days.

For TTM, I usually tip 100-200. I think you should get body scrub (Korean style) first at Sazanka/Akane/Nico when you first get here... For restaurant, usually you dont have to worrry about tipping. Most restaurant already include service fee..then some advertise at the their entrance that they dont charge service fee...so it's up to you that you want to tip for their good service or not. It is a norm here that Thai check the bill before they pay...of course it in Thai....so for us just make sure the correct number of the items we order and if you can remember the price....guess here they sometimes put add more items to the bill or charge diff price.

As TVN said, 100-200 B should suffice for a tip. Most Thai traditional massage places charge 300-400/hr in the city area. For restaurants, I normally leave 20-40 B tip, if they do not charge service charge, so make sure you check the bill. If you really like that waitress, then don't leave the tip on the tray (any tips on the tray will be shared), instead put it in her hand discreetly. Damn! 2K LT?! The going rate in most bars these days is 4K LT. Anyway, it all depends on how much she wants you and also where you pick her up (some LT prices can go as high as 8K). As for the tip, well, taxi fare is normally appreciated, 100-200 Baht would suffice, 500 B would be greatly appreciated. If they perform beyond my expectations, then I'd give them another 1,000 B.

Oh great, sounds like I have the prices all screwed up. I'll ask DrLove when I meet up with him about the prices to be looking for. I got the 2000 from the most recent "My Trip to LOS" thread that has been posting a lot these past few days. Perhaps I misread it. Thank you for the info about service charge being added to the check in restaurants, and also the tip to double check all checks received (I probably would have done that anyway, but a reminder to do it is certainly helpful to ensure I do). bkkz, tips DIRECTLY to the waitress, roger that. Thank you, never would have thought about that. TVN, ESPECIALLY thank you for mentioning Korean Style scrub... I actually have no idea what that is, but since I AM a massage junkie (it's not JUST a name for BTF), I am delighted to have another option to search for. All the names you provided have been written down. Thanks dude. And to be honest, I am not sure I care much about getting Long Time, if all it means is go back to the room, one boom boom, sleep until six, and then watch her go drive away in a taxi. What I would LIKE is a date type thing (I believe called GFE), but will see what happens. Hopefully Dr.Love will set me straight.

Just use the 2K LT as a guide, not a hard and fast rule. You may be losing out on great experiences if you stick too much to that rate. If she's happy with 2K then I'd leave it at that. At the end of it, so long as you're both happy, that's what counts. If you're lucky, she won't even bother asking you for anything.
