The massage girl typically keeps half or less of the payment, so any tips are greatly appreciated. Remember, a lot of Thais make less than 8,000bt/month, so even a 20bt tip is useful to them.
Tipping in restaurants was pretty well covered by BK and others. Remember the "hand tip", if you liked your server discretely put the tip into her hand. They will love you for it. This also goes inside bars and go-gos - if you like the server you can give her a "hand tip".
Thais traditionally don't tip, or only round up. 20bt was pretty much the maximum that a typical Thai would tip. However, with the influx of farangs who brought their tipping guidelines with them, the expectations of a tip have increased. And, there is that idiot "service charge"...

i see just horrible advice re tipping.........the ugliest biggest thai massage woman would be outraged if you tipped her 20 baht!
and regarding your gfe. that just happens-you dont negotiate it from the start!

I almost spit out my coffee when I read the above. BKK has gotten way more expensive since the last time I was there. I skip BKK and head to Pattaya where I can get a ST for 700 and LT for 1K.

Free is now the only way I do it long term. I do have a very good friend, that is real good at what she does that charges 2000LT still, as do most of those where she works, with bt1500ST, or bt1000 depending on the girl, and the time of year.
Anything under 2000, then consider tipping if service is good, but for 2000, and over only tip if it was exceptional, but no real need.
My policy in restaurants is to not tip if they charge a service fee, it is a 10% rate if they do, so they have set the payment rate for the tip they demand if they do it, and ask in every restaurant if they do charge extra fee as many do not spell it out on the menu.
If the massage place charges in fractions of a hundred baht, then they expect you to round up to the next even 100 baht. If they charge in even 100 baht rates, then they expect a 100 baht tip for the massage.
follow the same principle with any extras you receive.
It is hilarious to see DG changed to snoops. That is the funniest thing all year...HAHAHA. He still writes the same so it is no secret who he is....lololol.

Hello from Bangkok! I have been here about 2 days (late arrival), and I am simply delerious with happiness here. Loving it, seriously. HOWEVER, I am having serious problem shopping here. MBK seems to be more expensive than US... I will try Terminal 21 after I leave MBK. But I am currently looking for shoes, wallet, and a watch, so maybe when I start looking for simple shirt and pants, MBK will be better? If anyone wants to give further advice about this, do so within 4 hours of this post, because I am only online to get in touch with DrLove. Thanks, everyone. I expect my after trip report will be 100 pages long, this place ROCKS!
