I use a debit card - that way it can't be clocked up high like a credit card- machines in thailand will on average charge you $5 a transaction-
Many travel agents like sell disposal prepaid visa cards (i.e. $500 credit on each)
Usually safes are ok - depending on where you stay- some smaller places may well (as you said) have a dubious access-
The main point was don't leave things laying around-
You should have a wing man who could smooth out stuff and also make the experience on a first night a lot easier-

Just go check stuff out- see whats out there - places and how it works

I agree with the Duck. Don't put a load of cash into the room safe. Of course they have a way to open it - they NEED a way to open it legit because people leave it locked, forget to unlock it, etc. Koolbreez talked about getting TCs as well - especially if your bank offers them for free. Get the biggest denonination you can, since the transaction fee is the same for $20 checks as it is for $1000 checks.
And, DON'T TELL ANYONE you have a shit-load of cash or TCs!!! Just makes you a target. And, DON'T wave a bunch of cash around when you got out to party. Ditto.
Use common sense. BK - another couple of good stickies - "vacation money management" and "common sense".

Agree..you may not like to eat durian but you can eat durian chip and it's very good. Durian at Gourmet Market at Paragon is very expensive. You get alot cheaper from street vendor/little shop along the street/or from the truck. If you get around China town area, then try it from there.
Mangosteen is a must try too...but it's alot more expensive if it's off season. One time at Gourmet Market I see one side with regular price at the time and one side is about 3x the price as the other side...the staff there told me b/c these mangosteens are from 100 year old tree 
Don't need to try any berries or cherry (very expensive) or pear or apple here.
About carrying money around here, it's good idea to have small bills (20/50/100/or with couple 500) in one pocket and all 1000 bills in another pocket.

I second and third that suggestion - it's what I do as well.
I only ever take with me, when I go out, what I expect on spending from my daily budget (which is usually around 10,000 Baht - I generally spend way less than that on most days, I just make sure I always have 10,000 on me.)
Then, 2,000 Baht in one pocket, in small denominations - 50s and 100s. 500 in 20s in my shirt pocket. The rest in the other pocket.
Always put any valuables in your FRONT pockets. NEVER in the back pocket.

This guy is deaf...we shouldnt assume he doesnt know where to put his money. He isnt a baby. Although one must question why he intends to load up on cash.
This guy is the perfect candidate for the Dr Love or whoever tour of bangkok, it will make things so much easier. It took me a couple of trips to actually relax and have fun in bangkok.....and im not hearing impaired.
Thailand is just so different from good ole USA.

About carrying the money, we carry alot more cash than the local here...we can carry easily 10K plus to go out sometimes here....the pocket pickers know that, so we are the big target for them....you dont want to pull out a big stack of cash to pay for street vendors food to get any attention....

bkkz, roger that about the method of identification. I will try and be very specific and graphic, so I will use an alternative alias for them to protect their identity.
Pretty much everyone is recommending against bringing money, so I will use the ATM option. Thanks to all who commented about that. And I will use the alternative pocket thing with the cash I DO have on me, but I plan to keep it at a bare minimum. No more than 3000 Baht on my at any one time. Go dolllar, 31.8 Baht to a dollar, up from 31.2 the start of this week!
Dirty Guru, I pretty much will do Dr. Love's tour because everyone recommended him (and I recognize that the tour might be a good learning experience), and then I am staying away from you stinking men! I am totally going to Thailand for the women! Girl Rule, men drool! No groups of men in my future. Grin. But thanks for the offer.
I am nearly done with the preparation for the trip (have two more books in the mail for the horrible 21 hour trip on the plane each way), and have come up with two questions that I hope you all have a wise manner of solving.
1) Ladyboys. I don't care to experience that myself, so I need a manner of determining that the lovely person I am interested in taking home is NOT a Ladyboy. The number one tip that I read for determining is their voice... Obviously that doesn't work with me being deaf. And I will not be grabbing the person at the crotch to test them for additional equipment. So, any recommendation as to how to politely do this? I suspect ASKING them would get me smacked by a woman...
2) Laundry - Being there three weeks means I will run out of clean clothes. Is there a significant difference between a hotel laundry setup vs. a street laundry process? Laundry happens to be my least favorite chore (rather clean the bathroom with a toothbrush) so will be using a laundry service for sure. Any advice?
Thanks everyone, I am nervous and yet looking very forward to my trip, and I suspect the advice given will make a difference. 16 days to start of trip, and counting.

Laundry on the street is easy. You will find enough laundries as you wander around on the streets. They usually charge by weight and are a very cheap option. Do not use the hotel laundry: it is very expensive.

Can avoid ladyboys by only visiting venues that aren't known to hire them, avoid patpong, and also can check their ID (say it is to check their age), and, most importantly, don't bar fine girls with hairy toes.
