Here, let me throw this out regarding the phone / iPhone suggestions.

Massage Slave - I'm going to check with one of my associates in Bangkok, and offer to loan you an iPhone for the duration of your trip. He can meet you on your first day, will configure it, and he'll give you some quick instructions for the basic functions, including load it up with some essential apps.

Not sure which model, but in your case, even the first generation model would be a solid performer for what you need it for. All you need to do is top it up with some calling credits (we can do that for you as well), and you're good to go.

I also strongly advise against renting a scooter on Koh Chang. There are some very treacherous S and hairpin turns up steep inclines at the northern and southern ends of the island that an inexperienced rider would find hair raising, especially if you can't hear any dangers on the road (like car horns). I frequently rode my motorcycle there when I lived just an hour from the pier, and wouldn't attempt those turns at night, they were bad enough when the roads were wet. I never wiped out on Koh Chang, but had I some very close calls. Accidents are common.

Ruamchit Plaza brings back some fond memories as I've banged dozens of girls there. Now, however, I spend a little more for the City Lodge on Soi 19, much nicer room with both the skytrain and subway nearly at your door step.

Ruamchit travel lodge (down soi 8 about 200m, by the park)

Actually it's Soi 10.....

And for people who are deaf, a new Iphone with Siri should be great. A pity though that the map features don't work yet in Thailand (but will in July 2012).

Which map features? The Siri connected ones?

Because regular Map app works just fine.

Yes, regular map works fine.

But Siri is not yet able to find places like 'Starbucks', Chinese Restaurants or directions.

Bullsh*t, he drinks Diet Cokes like they were going out of style.....hahahahahahahahaha.

I always get soi 8 (Lolitas), and soi 10 (Ruimchit) confused. I just went through the park to get back to the hotel. That is how I knew I was at the right soi....lololol.

It was funny to see a perfectly nice block of massage parlors turned into a vacant lot in only one night. Though instead of building anything back, Chavalit turned it into a nice park. One of the most valuable parks in Bangkok, considering the worth of the land it sits on.

Well, golly and bust my buttons (grin, that better Magnum?), I appear to have waited a touch too long to reply, lots of posts to respond to.

Magnum, yeah you have a point about Bangkok possibly becoming boring, so Pattaya is starting to sound like a good "side trip". However, as an Agnostic and basically not a "ruins" type person, I don't really think Angkor Wat is my cup of tea. Thanks for mentioning it though. And yeah, I think I will stick with asking Saucytim for his advice and direction, when it comes to the hotels. His response time has been great, and Darjelling looks like a nice chance for the lower rate.

Thaiaficionado, you are VERY right. Part of the reason to do this trip IS indeed to Live a Little (get out of my rut, have my mid-life crisis, etc.), so yeah I need to get out of Bangkok. However, I don't have much GFE in the past, so if I find it, I'll be all over it like white on rice. However, no way am I renting ANY motorcycle/scooter/car in Thailand, especially after watching a video of some guy scootering around in Pattaya.

Quim, thanks for the expansion of your opinion/thoughts about the differences between Bangkok and Pattaya. I admit that Bangkok sounds way more my type of thing (I'm more of a calm type, though perhaps not normal), but like Thai said, live a little, so I will probably head to Pattaya for at least a short time. And, I am TOTALLY going to be at a soapie and/or oily place. MS is for Massage Slave, after all. Not sure how much time I will spend with those, I might need to ask questions about those later.

TVN, actually I am thinking the first night in Bangkok is going to be totally wasted because of the flying. I've never been able to sleep on a plane. I sleep on my stomach, so when in a plane, that's... Difficult. Ha. So I am imagining arriving in Bangkok a raving lunatic, and hoping to get pass Immigration, getting to the hotel, and melting into the corner of the bathroom floor for a day. As for the family/friend old phone, nice thought, but unfortunately doesn't work for me.

Mr. Kool, you totally earned your name, for several reasons, but especially for the recommendation about Koh Chang. It sounds quite nice (waterfalls! hiking! Girl in front of me while hiking to a waterfall!!!) If I find a GFE type gal, I am SO going to do this. Thank you!

Daffyduck, wow, that's nice of you to offer. If it works, great, but if not, no problem, I am still not sure I need a phone. Now, a tablet or a laptop, that might be better, as they'd be used AFTER the trip as well.

DrLove, I certainly hope you're going to be THERE in Bangkok in the early days of February. I will send you a message on like the 27th or 28th of January to confirm. You all can stop recommending him, folks, I will use him if he's there. Grin. And if I can get a good map, I don't anticipate getting lost (not knowing the name, sure, but once I have a map and an address, I can find anything).

I think that responds to all who gave advice. Thank you, everyone. I went shopping today, and while I got a nice box of condoms (36 condoms, should be enough, I think that would be more than my previous total times), the buying of a carry-on luggage went horribly. 80 bucks for a single piece of luggage that I anticipate using only two times (depart, and then return) ? No thank you. So I might be using my book bag for more than just books. Other than those two things, is there anything else I need to buy here in the U.S.? I am planning to buy the toothpaste, toothbrush, floss, deoderant, shampoo and soap, at Thailand since that should be fine right?

Does anyone know if Bangkok's Japanese restaurant selections (especially the sushi!) is any better than U.S. version? I am a major foodie so while I will be all over the place with the Thai options, I probably will want to do Japanese, Indian, Chinese, etc... Japanese is my favorite ethnic food though, so this is the most important. Thanks.

Okay, the Rooster will crow soon, so I'm off to sleep. Thanks guys.
