Well, I don't disagree - but can say a few things on the subject-
I have seen guys in Laos successfully get extended permits (to stay in Thailand six months) on the bases that they were writers......which they weren't -
They had cut out many articles on travel in Thailand and butchered some into an opening Chapter with high quality photos (they did take)
I asked what sort of work they were going to do (really) ?
They said make high quality Porn -
Another guy started a business whereby people in the west would get paintings of "loved ones " and/or boats and landscapes etc - (from photos sent to his website)
He had small margins and had some painters in Pattaya churning them out-
(i think the porn guy had more fun)
I knew another Guy who sent off clothing and made an income-
If you have a Thai National girlfriend there are ways such as business up country -

11 years here, and not speaking Thai is pretty lame, but like I said there are exceptions, and I'm sure kennith has your same skill sets so simply buy him drinks all night, and he'll tell you how he did it 11 years ago, under totally different conditions, and you might get something useful out of it, but.........I really only see you spending money buying drinks as the outcome of information you will actually be able to use given your skill sets, unless he is going to fill you in on how to start your own business here without speaking Thai.
For someone to be working here for someone else making $6000US a month with housing, I expect his CV included a little more than a Wendy's manager, and being able to hang sheetrock, and do tile work....hahahahaha, and how long ago was that BK?

I know that salaries for teachers, unless you're into corporate teaching, are low but US$300 as mentioned by Koolbreez is not realistic... it's more like 600-900 dollars and that was years ago when I used to teach.
But it's true, you might spent a lot of time chasing money.

ummmm... no offense to anyone, but if you think making $500-900 U.S. in Thailand is a decent living, then I would hate to see how you lived in your home country...... that kind of money will get you a one room Thai style apartment......you will be careful to run your aircon because it costs so much.... you will get to know and eat off street carts.... you won't be able to go to many decent go-go's as you simply won't have the money....
so what do you get ? Existense....... if that's the way you want to live, God bless you. But it sure is not for me.
I see guys like this all the time.... riding the green buses.... sometimes on the BTS..... dishoveled..... unkept.....
Manager at Wendy's? no transerable skill to Thailand. Period.
Construction worker? Ditto.
The only way to make it here with your skill set is to start your own business. Do not be a construction worker, be a developer. Do not be a manger, own your own business. If you cannot do these things, do yourself a favor and stay in your home country as the road ahead for you in Thailand will be a disaster.
In fact, we could have DG follow you around and film your deep spiral downwards if you do move here.
Let's look at the numbers.... let's say you make $1,000 a month... that's 30k Baht......
10k Baht a month for an apartment.... and I will tell you it will be a one room piece of shit. That leaves you 20k Baht...... You still have to pay power and water... so let's assume you will not run your aircon......wow, live is great, huh? no aircon in Thailand..... start the math from here my friend....

I need to agree with TL and Koolbreze, working local contract is not an option in Thailand or most other places in SE Asia.
I work IT Consulting and wages paid in Singapore (which are the highest in SE Asia) are about 60% of what one can earn in the US, EU, OZ. In Thailand or PI cut another %20. This ratio pretty much translates across all professions.
To be hired on Expat terms you pretty much have to start in your home country with an MNC that has offices and needs your expertise in Thailand.... not very easy but do-able if you are in Banking, Hi-Tech, or some niche profession related to manufacturing. This is how I ended up in Singapore.
There are other ways if you have some money to invest and an entrepreneurial spirit. You can invest in the F&B business (and work 120 hour weeks), do something related to online income (Google ads or selling crap on eBay), or just living off of dividends from investments in high-yield stocks (but to live comfortably you would need about USD 500K).
The most viable option is to split time between a country where you can get a decent job at decent pay and Thailand. I know several people who work 6-8 months in the Middle East (Oil and Gas, IT, Construction, etc.) and spend the rest of the year traveling around the world doing as they wish.
As for me, I now work with IT clients in the US that require me to be onsite 25% - 30% of the time and work remotely for the balance of the time. Last year I worked from Singapore, Beijing, Bangkok, Manila, Cebu, ShenZhen, Hong Kong, London, and Bali for my US clients. When in the US I was in Seattle, Sacramento, LA, Houston, Austin, Chicago, and NYC. In summary, I can pick where I want to work as long as I have a reliable Internet connection and I do not mind taking online meetings in the middle of the night.
Of course, YMMV...
