China Sailor
My father was diagnosed with prostrate cancer and the doctor told him that he could treat it but at his age (nearly 70) there was really no point.

Well my father died.... 15 years later.... of what is basically natural causes and effects related to his dementia.... prostrate cancer did not play a role.

Bottom line is that there are more dangerous conditions for older men to be concerned about (Colonic Cancer, Adult Diabetes, Liver Dysfunction, etc.). IMHO one should focus on the highest risk and the other conditions will take care of themselves...

Gentlemen.

Thank you for taking an interest in this subject, And it does show the BFT is still alive.

quack quack
This is my dilemma.Apart from a few toilet troubles, I have no syptoms at all. I had my prostate felt two weeks ago and the comment was "Yes its enlarged and shiny" no mention was made to what that meant.

China Sailor.

I think the doctors and there are 3 of them looking after me, very well I might add.
Are all coming up with the same anwser.
I did ask one outright if he would tell me if I needed
treatment. he nodded "if you did we do it tomorrow"

I think because I have such a lifestyle and showing no pain. I tell myself WHY ROCK THE BOAT.

If my PSA goes up too high, they will they will tell me.
One thing I will comment one. The hospital I attend is full, and all the treaments available are being used.

thanks again PP

"Yes its enlarged and shiny" no mention was made to what that meant.

Shiny is good in that there are no nodes on the outside of prostate that would indicate that cancer is spreading. The enlargement may be because of the cancer, or because you are getting older, or both.

I don't think you would have any pain with prostate cancer until it had progressed to a point where it was very serious and maybe terminal, so don't go by whether you have pain. Just track your PSA.

Have read that the effects of prostate cancer diminish as one ages & sometimes no treatment is required.

Nelson Mandella has prostate cancer, but has no treatment for the condition; apparently several types of prostate cancer are hormone related and as one ages the secretion of such hormones decrease, causing less aggravation to this cancer.
Some prostate cancers are very slow growing, and for some older men they will most likely die from other causes before the prostate cancer becomes a problem. That is not exactly the same as "does not require treatment." It is an individual choice made by the patient and doctor to decide what is best.

This is an update FYI RE: my diagnosis of prostate cancer 6 years ago.

A long story cut short: mine was a very fast growing type, PSA doubling every 3 months. I waited four months for the operation....radical prostatectomy. Should have done it "right away" as it had developed quite significantly during that period (biopsy had it "at the margins, but not yet out side the prostate).

I had a second bout two years later....salvage radiation 37 treatments.

So PSA after radiation appropriately declined to 0.01 or non-detectable. Last year it climbed 0.01, 0.02, 0.04, 0.08...scared the "bejeezus" out of me. Then declined to 0.06, 0.04, 0.02 10 April (all courtesy of BNH). So, whatever it is, PSA, it is almost certainly not cancer.

It is vital that you pay attention to the rate of PSA climbing, not the overall PSA value.

BTW, I am now fully functional, less sperm at "dry ejaculation and climax." A bit of Cialis works, but these last few months erections come without it.

Now 64 yo.

Bob

I now take a Cyproterone tablet 3 times a day and after 1 week I was given a injectionj with a 1 inch nail,It felt like it, 3.6mg of Zoladex which is to shrink
my prosate, ready for radiography in three month but have a injection every 26 days.

This is painful as it goes in the stomach.
wish me luck

keep you posted.

the doc did ask me if I was still going to thailand. no I said

When I finished with you the world will be your oyster,

regards PP

It sounds like the drugs you are taking are for an enlarged prostate, or for prostate cancer where radiation or operations are contraindicated. (Not a MD here)

They slow things down....

PSA 20 to 26 over a year, over a few months, over a few weeks? If you have an aggressive cancer, 20 to 26 in a short time and are young enough, then I'd ask the doc why are not we taking the obvious steps.

If your age or other physical conditions are such to indicate the "slow it down, shrink the prostate" approach, then so be it. Agressive treatment is a path to be taken knowing the risks and especially unwanted side effect possibilities.

I had both an operation and a later set of radiation treatments....the cancer appears to be gone now, and side effects were only moderate and over time decreasing. But as mine was an unusual aggressive form of cancer, so too was the unusual lack of serious side effects.

LOL, now, except for almost dying after the operation from bilateral pulmonary embolisms.

When post radical-prostatectomy my PSA started to climb at the same 3 month doubling rate, I asked my urologist "Is there any other explanation other than cancer." "No" One day later I was at the radiologist and a day after that had the pre-treatment imaging.

In my particular case, my urologist was cautious in his early approach, usual prostate cancer treatment is to wait and see...it's slow growing. His "lens," retrospectively, failed to recognize the aggressive form I had (as evidenced after the fact by the post operation biopsy, and the pre-operation 3 month PSA doubling rate)

So, 20 to 26 on its own is not significant. By your nature, your PSA levels may be high. But one effect of hormone related treatments, even in taking folksy saw palmetto, is that it can mask signals given off by prostate chemicals (PSA tested).

If you have not done the usual Googling, do so....then ask those docs the hard questions. You and they will probably be satisfied to continue the path chosen.

For persons with a large prostate and prostate cancer, taking drugs to reduce the prostate size is often the first step prior to radiation therapy.
