So, now they *can* heal the common cold.
Or at least, they will be able to, soon.
Seems they finally perfected the 'ultimate flu vaccine' which not only will render you immune to all sorts of cold viral infections, but at the same time will impart long-lasting immunity. Obviously, down the road, this should be applied to other kinds of viral diseases as well, which is good news.
Still, 5 years away (or sooner, in case the Chinese lose control over the chicken farms again)

The Vaccine to Prevent Every Strain of Flu
British scientists believe they have found flu vaccines that may transfer long-lasting, wide-spread immunity, the 'holy grail' of the business. Unfortunately, they are still opting for the traditional injection model and not the preferred kissing application. Best of all, if this works, the local news will quit exploiting the 'impending bird flu epidemic' to increase ratings of peasant viewership.
Described as the 'holy grail' of flu vaccines, it would protect against all strains of influenza A - the virus behind both bird flu and the nastiest outbreaks of winter flu.
Just a couple of injections could give long-lasting immunity - unlike the current vaccine which has to be given every year.
The brainchild of scientists at Cambridge biotech firm Acambis, working with Belgian researchers, the vaccine will be tested on humans for the first time in the next few months.
A similar universal flu vaccine, being developed by Swiss vaccine firm Cytos Biotechnology, could also be tested on people in 2007 - and the vaccines on the market in around five years.
Importantly, the vaccines would also be quicker and easier to make than the traditional jabs, meaning vast quantities could be stockpiled against a global outbreak of bird flu.
Martin Bachmann, of Cytos, said: "You could really stockpile it. In the case of a pandemic, that would be a huge advantage.
The new jabs would be grown in huge vats of bacterial 'soup', with just two pints of liquid providing 10,000 doses of vaccine.
Current flu vaccines focus on two proteins on the surface of the virus. However, these constantly mutate in a bid to fool the immune system, making it impossible for vaccine manufacturers to keep up with the creation of each new strain.
The universal vaccines focus on a different protein called M2, which has barely changed during the last 100 years.
The protein is found in all types of Influenza A, including the current bird flu and the virus that caused the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic which killed up to 50 million across the globe.
Normally, such vaccines would have to go through at least five years of human tests before going on the market. However, if a bird flu pandemic occurs before that, they could be made more quickly available.

I would suggest that you not hold your breath waiting for this to happen. Given the nature of viruses if you attack any given part of the virus it will kill some and the those that survive will be immune to the cure.

NOT TRUE,..... it mutates several times a year, that is how the pathogenic version of "E. coli" keeps popping up !!!
It is mutating in response to the anti-biotic "treatment" it receives...

Sorry oreally,
Flu is a virus, not a bacteria. Therefore anti-biotics will do nothing against a flu. To fight flu you need an anti-viral such as a entry-blocker or a protense.
E.coli is a bacteria therefore anti-biotics do work on it...

And a cell can and will (or may not) die because of failure to replicate...

Cell stops reproduction, (in the viral case the cell now has the "host" genes)....
In the bacterial state, the cell now is "overwhelmed"

"How Influenza Viruses Change: Drift and Shift
Influenza viruses are dynamic and are continuously evolving. Influenza viruses can change in two different ways: antigenic drift and antigenic shift. Influenza viruses are changing by antigenic drift all the time, but antigenic shift happens only occasionally. Influenza type A viruses undergo both kinds of changes; influenza type B viruses change only by the more gradual process of antigenic drift.
Antigenic drift refers to small, gradual changes that occur through point mutations in the two genes that contain the genetic material to produce the main surface proteins, hemagglutinin, and neuraminidase. These point mutations occur unpredictably and result in minor changes to these surface proteins. Antigenic drift produces new virus strains that may not be recognized by antibodies to earlier influenza strains. This process works as follows: a person infected with a particular influenza virus strain develops antibody against that strain. As newer virus strains appear, the antibodies against the older strains might not recognize the "newer" virus, and infection with a new strain can occur.
This is one of the main reasons why people can become infected with influenza viruses more than one time and why global surveillance is critical in order to monitor the evolution of human influenza virus stains for selection of which strains should be included in the annual production of influenza vaccine.
In most years, one or two of the three virus strains in the influenza vaccine are updated to keep up with the changes in the circulating influenza viruses. For this reason, people who want to be immunized against influenza need to be vaccinated every year.
Antigenic shift refers to an abrupt, major change to produce a novel influenza A virus subtype in humans that was not currently circulating among people (see more information below under Influenza Type A and Its Subtypes). Antigenic shift can occur either through direct animal (poultry) -to-human transmission or through mixing of human influenza A and animal influenza A virus genes to create a new human influenza A subtype virus through a process called genetic reassortment. Antigenic shift results in a new human influenza A subtype. A global influenza pandemic (worldwide spread) may occur if three conditions are met:
A new subtype of influenza A virus is introduced into the human population.
The virus causes serious illness in humans.
The virus can spread easily from person to person in a sustained manner. "

I would suggest you either stop drinking, or you only get involved in a debate wherein you actually know what you are talking about.
If you consider a 'virus' and a 'bacteria' to be the same pathogen, then there is no need to continue any further debate. Antibiotics work against bacteria - active, living germs, by killing them. A virus is not a micro-organism.

Read the article, the approach makes sense:
