While in Bangkok, I take Cipro to help minimize my chances of getting some sort of urinary track infection, such as gonorrhea from getting bare-back blowjobs. It also helps prevent conjunctivitis and bacterial food poisoning. I take it for two weeks, then I stop. I'd rather be a bit pro-active, rather than wait for my cock to catch on fire and piss lava for two weeks. So far it has worked.
Cipro is a valid broadband antibiotic to be used prophylactically, in small frequencies.

In other words, if you're going to use it for 2 weeks at a time, once or twice a year, you should be fine, but if you go more often, there is risk that it will lose its effectiveness - it has less to do with your body relying on it too much, but rather with it not working when you really, really need it.

Bear in mind, Cipro is a good application for critical stuff like pulmonary infections (hence its miracle drug status when it comes to anthrax, for example), which is pretty important.

If you are concerned about urinary tract infections, Amoxicilin might be a better antibiotic for prophylactic use as it's easier absorbable with less side effects -- albeit the same concerns about combination with milk, and sensitivity to sunlight apply.

Every prescription medication has a list of frightening, possible side-effects.

True. However, from what it seems to me Cipro has its share of "black box" warnings and "Dear Doctor" letters. Those are items on a different category from the regular side effects warnings in the usual literature always included.

As a matter of fact, relative to the universe of drugs available, there are not so many with black box warnings ( http://formularyproductions.com/blackbox/ ) ; consequently, those few I would think I should really only take them when specifically prescribed, despite trying to discount the fact due to knowing already that "every prescription medication has a list of frightening, possible side-effects."

I didn't know the Duck could give medical advice. There is really no subject that escapes his knowledge. Chapeau!

Jeez, taking heavy antobiotics like Cipro prophylactically doesn't sound like a good idea to me...

Ohhh here's one from my experiences with the nice little drawbacks of LOS mongering... related to conjunctivitis, so: kind of back to topic...

I once managed to catch gonorrhea and was treated for it at Bumrungrad succesfully. No problem... gone in a day... Doctor said we give you something against Clamydia as well, cause it often goes together with gonorrhea, fine with me...

Couple of weeks later I had problems with my eyes... lots of nasty stuff in them in the morning etc. I went to the Bumrungrad eye doctor and he said, what did he say? Not much really... gave me some simple drops for relief of dry eyes... not even against conjunctivitis... Idiot!

Some more weeks later back in Europe the eye problems weren't gone away... On a sunday I went to the emergency ward at the local university and - thank god - the docotor there was a really good one. He did a very close inspection of the inside of my eye lid with heavy optical instruments etc. and from that he could tell that my conjunctivitis came from... *Clamydia*!!! Quite embarassing when he asked me where I've spent my last holidays and I said "Bangkok"... Big smile on his and his attending students faces...

Ha... So not only was the medication against Clamydia in Bumrungrad not sufficient in the first place, but also was the Bumrungrad eye doctor an idiot who didn't consider a falang in BK might have Clamydia conjunctivitis...

My good uni doctor gave me some special antibiotics which I had to take for about 4 weeks (!) and then the problem was gone... (and so was all my intestinal flora btw.)

Which brings this thread full-circle, relating back to the importance of washing your hands... how did you think you got conjunctivitis from your Clamydia, after all?

It's really much better to read things in *context* instead of just quoting a portion.

Well, it's a regular type of conjunctivitis called "Chlamydial conjunctivitis"... You can ask the doc... no, better not Doc Lub...

Quote from the Netdoctor...
Chlamydial conjunctivitis
This type of conjunctivitis is caused by an organism called Chlamydia trachomatis. This organism may also affect other parts of the body and can cause the venereal disease
(...)
Both eyes will be red with a sticky discharge. The cornea may also be involved in this condition.
(...)
Treatment is with chlorotetracycline ointment and tetracycline tablets in order to ensure that infection elsewhere is controlled. Children cannot be treated with tetracycline and erythromycin is usually used for them. Because of the possible infection of other mucous membranes any associated venereal disease should be identified and both the patient and their partners must be treated.

LOL!

First of all, you were lucky, as it was bacterial conjunctivitis - easy to treat. That said, it's just as contagious, particularly to mucous membranes -- chances are that you touched areas on your body that were infected with chlamydia, and then proceeded to touch your face, or rub your eyes, or something. Infection is nearly instant - incubation period is between 3-7 days when the symptoms become pronounced.

OK, OK, we understand, but then what about anal barebacking ? What is the best mix of amoxylin and singha to use as a prophylactic in such a case? Do black women really count ?

Well, that makes sense... I have this habit of touching my private parts every now and then...

I was under the impression that chlamydia are able to travel the human body and thereby find there way to the conjunctiva and eye lid...

Yes, it is... via your hands touching your eyes and face.

...strongly advise not mixing alcohol and antibiotics, as it seriously undermines the purpose of taking antibiotics, and potentially increase the severity of the antibiotics' side-effects.
