I am suffering from tinnitus which started a couple of months ago. I live in Europe and in the past couple of months I have seen several doctors but no one has been able to explain why it has started and what I can do about it. They have taken several MRIs from my head but have not found any damage in my ears or hearing nerves. I have also had several acupuncture sessions but it has not helped either. I will be visiting Bangkok soon and I wonder if anyone of the members here has some positive experience of treatment of tinnitus in a hospital or clinic in Bangkok (or anywhere else in Thailand). Thanks.

Not in Thailand, but with these guys. http://www.tinnitus.org In most cases Tinnitus is not caused by damage, it is caused by peoples own perceptions of the noise in their head. In other words there is nothing physically wrong, you just hear things you'd normally block out. For example pretty much everybody has some sort of noise in their ears when they stick their fingers in there, or go into a sound proof room. However, tinnitus sufferers start focusing on the noise and that f***s them up, and it's like a viscous circle - that their reactions to it causes them to give greater importance to it. It's a bit like sitting by a humming fridge, normally you'd just forget about after a while. Most people just get used to it, so it's not a bother, especially when they understand why it's happening. In more extreme cases you can try TRT. The treatment focuses on refocusing the attention of your brain so it doesn't hear the noise, in other words back to normal.

Many thanks BL for the link. What you wrote about tinnitus is exactly what I have heard from my doctors. In my case it seems to be related to stress which started with terrible pain in my neck and developed to tinnitus after a couple of months. As you write, it is really a viscous circle since it prevents one from sleeping which in turn causes more stress. Anyhow, I am trying TRT now and listen to white noise a couple of hours every day. Just in case anyone is interested this is a good link for different kinds of noise: http://www.simplynoise.com/. To TL: That is certainly my plan A but I was just looking for a plan B just in case it did not work Cheers, Marc

I have had tinnitus for years. My original doctor told me it might have been caused by taking too much aspirin at a younger age. I have always used aspirin for most any ailment so that part is probably true in my case. My information is it is not curable or treatable. I just pretend it is my wife and her mother talking in Thai and just block it out.

Marc69,tinnitus is frequently associated with noise induced hearing impairment caused by prolonged exposure to loud noise, often in an industrial environment,or with rock band musicians,or those who frequently attend rock concerts,or discos. Tinnitus can be very disturbing depending on its frequency, tone, and volume. Sometimes it will spontaneously remit, but it often returns.I am not aware of any cure,at least when it is associated with hearing loss. If it interferes with your sleep keeping the radio turned on by your bedside, broadcasting soothing music, can help to mask the tinnitus, and enable you to get some sleep.

Both aspirin and exposure to loud music have been also mentioned by my doctors as possible triggers of tinnitus but neither applies in my case. Hearing loss is also excluded for me as I have done several hearing tests and all results seem to be normal. In my case stress related to my job combined with a couple of new tooth crowns seem to have affected my jaw joints which in turn has caused the tinnitus. I do listen to white noise to mask the tinnitus when I want to get some sleep. I am hoping that taking some time off and getting some rest in Bangkok will at least reduce the problem to some manageable level. Thanks to everyone who took the time to respond.

Marc, I have Tinnitus for about 15+ yrs. now. Very high tone "in" left ear... more or less. To be honest, I just ignore it more or less and can live with it easily... Sometimes I forget about it for days or maybe even weeks... Although it is there, always, ever... All theories about where it comes from I heared in the past where clueless assumptions... Main cure was blood thinning (?) for quite some time... didn't work for me... There is a new theory and cure though that caught my attention. The idea is that the sound illusion comes from idle nerves/brain cells which go into some kind of idle oscillation. Thing is that this oscillating idle brain cells or nerves is a know fact in recent brain research. And this new theory also created a cure which may in fact has the potential to help at least some people. The cure is a time-consuming process though, with measurements of your brain activity while exposing your ear to specific tones shows on which frequency your tinnitus is. After catching your specific tinnitus pattern you use a little let's say mp3 player thingy to play exactly "around" your personal imagined tinnitus sound so your idle brain cells/nerves are confronted with real sound exactly where they are idle hearing imagined sounds. As I said it's not an easy catch... but first results seemed to be promising... I saw an extensive TV feature about it lately, with patient interviews etc. All pretty promising... I know that a highly specialised and experienced clinic in Germany is doing this and it is fairly new and many doctors may not know about it... Don't know if it is available in other countries as well?!? If you are interetsted I would be happy to do some google research for you to find out about it. Just let me know...

Mick, many thanks for your extensive and informative post. I have had tinnitus for about two months now and honestly I find it very hard to deal with. I have heard from many people like yourself that they have learned to live with it but unfortunately I am not there yet. I have read about those methods based on finding the frequency of tinnitus but some people claim that even the frequency changes from time to time although I don't have any experience with it myself. In any case it should be worthwhile to try it so I would be grateful if you could find out more about that clinic in Germany and let me know about it. Cheers, Marc
