I dealt with tinnitus for 12 years before I had a very good friend, also an ostiopath, give me some relaxation techniques, and a short stint on drugs to help in getting that part of my body used to remembering what being relaxed felt like.

He was under the impression the original ringing noise was causing stress that resulted in increased muscle tension that compounded the noise. He put me on a program to get rid of that stress, getting me down to the real level of the noise, then training my body to forget about it basically.

After 7 months of training I reached a point where the tinnitus became masked by simply relaxing it away through meditation, and centering my thought on something other than the ringing.

He described the technique as self-hypnosis, combined with training my body to believe the noise was not there by centering my thought on something else unrelated to the noise, and my body remembering what it felt like before the noise ever started.

Sitting next to a spinning 600megawatt generator at a dam for 3 years is how I developed tinnitus. That's a generator fed by a 40 foot tall waterpipe to make it turn, putting out 820,000 horsepower through the shaft turning the 16 foot high coils 4 deepx56 feet across.

Not saying this works in all cases, but the techniques I was taught worked in my case. Most of it was just training my mind to forget it is there, then for my body to remember how it used to be without the noise, and tricking my mind into masking out the noise when it starts. It's still there, and shows up in hearing tests, but I'm no longer that aware of it.

marc, thanks for your kind feedback. With tinnitus, it's all in our heads, and we're not likely to get much sympathy.

koolbreez, your post makes me curious as to how you dealt with your tinnitus for the first 12 years. I was thinking that surely you would have adapted naturally during that time, and would have already been "no longer that aware of it". But maybe you had it worse than I do.

Tinnitus is so subjective that it can be difficult to understand how serious it can be. I mean, how can I compare what I hear in my ear to what others hear? Is mine louder or quieter? Higher or lower? Shriller or softer?

As I write, I am of course aware of the ringing in my right ear. I'm thinking about it. It's whooshing like the wind, rather than screaming like a dental drill. This is good. The wind sound is less troublesome, and easier for my brain to ignore.

But at times, the screeching drill sound kicks in. If I then sit and do nothing, I will be only too aware of it. Luckily, there are lots of things to do in order to distract my brain.

A swim, a chess game, ping pong, sports on TV, even drinking in the evening to fall asleep, and more, all help.

I would say that I'm unaware of my tinnitus more than 90% of the time (including sleeping time). I've never sought help of any kind for this problem, other than reading the helpful therapy available thanks to the internet.

Anyone for comparing notes?

You are welcome, thailien. The fact is that yours and others feedback and advice in this thread have helped more than anything else in coping with my tinnitus. I just wanted to pass on the same advice to MF and those others who might be suffering from tinnitus.

I will try accupuncture and will go see a Tibetan doctor at MSK in Nepal, just in case. Then I will try the various meditation/relaxation techniques...

This morning I was awaken by the noise at 6am...not nice

My mother suffered from this condition which can have many causes and there are also many thereapies available.

In here case believe it or not it was linked to her high sugar intake.

It might be a long shot but you could see what happens if you cut out all sugar from your diet.

Actually I did cut all the food supplements I was taking, I wonder if some combo did not go wrong...

Vit E + magnesium + zinc + yohimbe + jiaogulan together....errr...maybe I overdid it...

i just did read that one of the "unwanted side effect" of an overdose of yohimbe was....death...(defenetely "unwanted" LOL)

Also the day before tinnitus started I got stinged by 8 bees on my hand...(trying to remove a bee nest on the chimney of an old neighbour...) it was the first time I got stinged by bee, so maybe some type of allergic reaction?

So hard to pinpoint what trigered it to start...

Be careful with the zinc supplements, you can fry your liver real fast with that stuff. If so just grill some onions. Seriousily, zinc is hard on your liver. If you need zinc eat more bananas then.

I m trying a supplement in vit B12 (being vegetarian I could possibly have a deficit and it can be one cause of tinnitus) + Ginko Biloba (i been reading some case s of tinnitus get good results with this herb...)

So far still the same...no improvement...tonight it is worst than ever...sound like a dremel at full speed on glass near each ear...horrible

Seem like gingko biloba is helping, I take 2 X 40mg capsule with each meal and tinnitus is still there but a much more bearable level.
I stopped taking it for a few days (forgot the pills when I went to Nepal) and it came back.

I also went to MSK in Kathmandu and the Tibetan doctor gave me a 3 month treatment, bitter pills to crush and eat with hot water after meals, then at night an "AGAR 35" pill. I know this doctor since years (i do the translations for MSK) and trust him when he say his treatment can help.

Well, here it is:

About 6 months ago, I had a few(+) margaritas (Cuervo mix + Brazilian cachaça). That night, though hard to remember, my tinnitus was gone.

Did I really remember that?

So, again, two 1.5 oz tinnitus drinks. Gone.

Okay, mix, +tequila. Nope

Cachaça + Lime, etc = dois caipirinhas Nope

Tried (next day) again two mix + cachaça: gone.

One drink, nope.

Okay, Your experience may vary, and there is no upside to drinking to reduce a simply bothersome ailment.

But something is going on....
