By the way, if one needs to make extensive international calls, the best option are those calling cards to be used on landlines. Those are not SIM cards but paper cards with a code hidden on the back. They include a package a of minutes to a variety of international destinations (e.g. 360) and it is usually possible to dial a toll free number from the hotel room, enter the code and then dial the intl number. The sound quality is better than on mobile transmissions and one can talk from the comfort of one's room at a ridiculously low price. I don't know the thai brands but in Singapore, they were sold all over the place.

Yesterday at MBK. Orange 100 baht sim card with 6o baht call time credit. I think the charges for Thai outbound in country calls are 3-0-3-1-0-1-0 etc/ per minute. SMS 3 baht send. Call USA 7 baht/minute. Avail any Orange reseller at MBK or at the Orange desk I think on the 5th floor of MBK at the end on the BTS side with two cute girsl working at the booth. Orange is not the best but this is the cheapest entry fee you will get to have a cell phone you can use in Thailand. Relaods everywhere with min 100 baht.

The *very best* option is a service called Broadvoice (broadvoice.com). You need to have access to a DSL line (or, if you use their WiFi phone, an open hotspot), but for $20/month, you can essentially make *unlimited* international calls to 21 supported countries. For $25/mo, you get unlimited calls to 35 supported countries (no, Thailand is not a suported country). $20/mo plan: Australia, Netherlands, Austria, Norway, Belgium, Singapore, Canada, Spain, Chile, Sweden, China, Switzerland, Denmark, Taiwan, France, United Kingdom, Germany, United States, Ireland, Vatican City, Italy $25/mo plan: All the above, plus: Argentina, Luxembourg, Brazil, Malaysia, Czech Republic, New Zealand, Finland, Poland, Greece, Portugal, Israel, San Marino, Japan, South Korea NOTE: As this does not include THailand, it is not necessarily the best plan to call Thailand (rates are 5 cents to landlines, 9 cents to mobiles), but if you are *IN* Thailand, and need to make extensive international calls, this is the way to go.

Not necessarily the way to go, as it doesn't include calls to mobile telephones. "BroadVoice calls to mobile phone numbers outside the US and Canada are not included in the Unlimited World/World Plus Plans." It would be hard to beat a 7/8 baht per minute mobile to mobile international call. Calling cards too will not be cheaper.
