A couple more points to add...

I had a friend with a GSM (dual band I think) phone that tried to use the DTAC prepaid but the frequency did not match. She (unfortunately) has to pay out to the PM and use the AIS pre-paid which worked fine.

The main choices you have here for pre-paid include:

DTAC (my BB7100t works on this)
True
AIS

If you go to their official stores, they will set it up and you can confirm it is working on the spot. The down side may be that you often have to show your passport and register to get your sim.

If you go to the 7-11s and little markets like that, they will generally sell and may "look" at your ID but that is about all. They usually will not be any help on knowing what will/will not work so you may buy and may be out some cash if there is a frequency issue.

Last time I checked, street price for a standard pre-paid SIM was about 200-300 baht and that included 50 baht calling. You can charge up as much as you like.

If you do not need it right from the airport, there are countless shops along the street, MBK, Patpong, etc. that will sell the cards. Assuming you don't speak Thai, find a shop with someone that speaks english and make certain your card works BEFORE you leave the store.

One more thing to add..... If you have an old GSM phone laying around, you may want to bring it with you just in case. That way you might still be able to use your BB with your telstra (?) in a pinch and/or have a spare phone in case you find the BB does not work well.

cheers

Is there a good place where I could just rent a cell phone for a week? How much?

Might be cheaper if you just buy a sim card for 200 baht at any mall. Hopefully your phone is unlocked otherwise go to MBK and any of the vendors can unlock it for you.

Posted previously in international SIM chip thread:

I use an international SIM chip from Telestial in my Nokia N80, works well. Probably not the cheapest rate, but having instant access to all the local cell towers like Iragna, AsiaCell, the one in Dubai...kind of convenient. And this chip has the automatic re-charge feature that you pre-set. When your minutes deplete, it charges your credit card the preset amount and the minutes are loaded automatically. Again, convenient.

Hi Guys,
I just bought a AIS 1-2 Sim of ebay, it was ativated on July 21 06... When I recieved the SIM there was a letter stating that after Sept 06 I need to add an '8' between the '07' my question is, do I need to go into a AIS store to change anything on the SIM card? Or is it just a matter of adding the 8 when someone calls me???

Thanks in advance

I have dtac but I think the situation is the same.

You do not have to bring it in but you will need to include the 8 in all the (thai) mobile numbers you may have stored either on your phone or the sim. I think the grace period ends in November at which time 8 is no longer optional.

If you have a lot of numbers stored on your sim (unlikely as it is new) you can take it in and they have a gizmo that will automatically insert the 8 so you do not have to manually do this.

if you really want to know, you can call them @ 1175 from your AIS phone or email at callcenter@ais.co.th and they will give you the details

hope this helps

Hey, one more thing...sometimes the Prepaid SIMS expire unless they have been charged up recently. My experience is that most are good for 90 days unless they get charged up. If the account is not added to ($$), they pull the number and reuse. You may want to send an email to AIS with the SIM number and check on that just in case.....
