1-2-Call....

========================================
I went to a regular DTAC shop, threw on 800 baht and then the card was good for 1 year.
========================================
Not necessary.... you have to buy the 199 baht sim card with 1 year validity and then top up once (any amount will do).

True Move has a 2 year Sim Card now... 99 baht... you have to make a one minute call every 90 days. Flat 24 hour rate of 2 baht per minute.

AIS 1-2-call probably has the best coverage if you are in the middle of nowhere. But why would you want to go there.

For long expiry, you can also buy a 1-2-call SIM card that has a one year expiry after your last top-up. The name of the SIM card is "uun uun". The price is only 50 baht for the SIM card and just top up one time for as low as 50 baht and the card will not expire for one year. The downside of this card is that the per minute rates are 2 and 4 baht/min inside/outside AIS network. There might be a way to get a better rate that this, though. You'd have to ask. For people with only occasional visits, this might be worth looking into.

Just yesterday, I asked for the "uun uun" SIM card at the Telewiz shop in the Emporium and they had them for 50 baht. For a newbie, the very cute, no-tattoo, perfect-English girl there would be happy to tell you all about the card, rates for overseas calling, pricing plans and SMS. And she'll set your card to English too, and help you set up voice mail if you want it.

Tell her the handsome guy from Colorado sent you and she'll raise the price!

hi, new to switching sim cards. kind of basic question, but my phone in the states is dual band 850/1900. can it be "unlocked" to use in thailand, or do I need a GSM 1800 phone? thanks. hoping not to but another phone, and hoping not to use publicphones anymore - yuck. thanks

Sorry to say, you need a new phone. GSM1800 for DTAC, GSM800 for AIC. Various others like Orange are one or the other. It requires either a dedicated single-band (read OLD) phone, or a triple or quad band phone, which you can use in both places.

The good news is that you can buy an older, used phone in Thailand for less than 1000 baht. It will be sufficient, if money is the issue.

I think you mean 900, not 800. Thailand has 900/1800/1900 frequencies in use by operators.

900/1800 is the common dual-band phone also used in Europe - the cheap 20 Euro Moto I bought in Germany works just fine here with the DTAC sim I picked up at 7-11.

The Americas are 850/1900. Buying a quad-band 850/900/1800/1900 phone is pretty much required in order to use it in both the US and the rest of the world.

Yes, of course. Thanks for the correction.

Given prices in the US, the OP should just buy a cheap phone at MBK for his Thai time.

Another correction... Thailand actually has a 1900 system in use by Thai Mobile...

Not a lot people use it though.... not popular at all.

Yep, I was aware. But inasmuch as the OP was asking about using his existing phone, I didn't want to muddy the waters with a little-used, and incompatible system.

Also, although I may be wrong, the 1900 CDMA phones from the US can NOT be used with the ThaiMobile system, and being CDMA, there is no SIM card for the owner to change.

No mention was made of CDMA.

T-Mobile and the old Cingular both used GSM 1900. ATT used GSM 850, but also some 1900 I think.

So if the phone was indeed unlocked (unlikely) it should work with a Thai Mobile sim. Assuming one could find a prepaid sim from them.

Now we're getting some confusion.

My statement about CDMA was in response to DrLove's addition to the list of available services.

ThaiMobile is 1900 CDMA, not GSM. CDMA phones do not use SIM cards, and are internally 'locked' to the carrier who sold them. Sprint and Verizon are prime examples in the US. Their phones are NOT interchangeable, least of all by the end user.

In any case, pedantry aside, the OP will be best served by buying a cheap phone in Thailand.

hs, the exhausted
