Exageration -- Apple doesn't really care, they just will continue to void your warranty if you bring a jailbroken iPhone to a store.
Happened to a client of mine -- I advised him against jailbreaking his iPhone 3GS, particularly since he bought the unlocked one for $300 in HK; he did anyway, on the advice of his friend, who promised him all kind of apps that he wouldn't have to pay for.
Long story short, he bricked his phone, was dumb enough to go to an Apple store in his panic (again, against my advice), and ended up having to pay $200 to get his phone replaced with a new one (refurbished).
Mind you, he was looking to save $50 on 'free' apps - not so smart, unless you *really* know what you are doing. All I am selling these days are fully unlocked iPhones, unlocked by Apple. The only iPhone where this was every really practical was the first generation model, as the baseband was physically unlocked. All presents 'unlocks' are software based, and fraught with problems.

For that price it's worth it to buy 5 in HK, and bring them back.
$1,885 for what I assume to be the 32GB version (you gotta start giving the details on model and capacity), which retails in HK for $750.

Here are the prices in HK:
Next, the online Apple store would provide contract-free iPhone 4 on the 30th. The price is amazing, $4988 for 16GB and $5888 for 32GB. All Hong Kong dollars, of course — the US conversion would be about $642 / $758, respectively. And as a bonus, the iPhone 3GS would be available too, $4088 (about $526) for 8GB version. All these prices are unconfirmed yet.
Think I'll fly over there, get my iPhone and a couple of Filipinas and perhaps an Indonesian too.

Same as what I picked up the 3GS' for, that I rent out to travelers.
I plan on picking up 5 of those on my next trip -probably fly in via HK, and then connect to BKK.
Yep, same prices as they are in Canada as well.

Apple to issue patch for browser flaw
Security update will fix Safari flaw discovered with the release of JailbreakMe app
Apple will release a security update to patch a flaw in its Safari mobile browser that could make it possible for hackers to gain access to an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch
Apple has confirmed that it will release a software update to address a recently discovered vulnerability in the way its mobile devices handle some web pages.
The patch will fix a flaw that could theoretically make it possible for a hacker to gain access to an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch simply by tricking its user in to opening a PDF document loaded with malicious code.
The problem came to light with the release of the iPhone Dev Team’s latest “jailbreak” app for the iPhone. Previous versions had to be side-loaded on to the device via a computer, but the new JailbreakMe tool can be installed and run on a device simply by visiting the JailbreakMe.com website.
It alerted security experts to the possibility that such a process could be used as a blueprint by hackers to find ways to exploit Apple users through their device’s web browser.
“We are aware of this reported issue,” said Apple in a statement. “We have already developed a fix and it will be available to customers in an forthcoming software update.”
Apple did not say when the update would be made available to users. The German government believes the security flaw to be so serious that it officially warned citizens of the dangers posed by the Safari vulnerability.
“This allows potential attackers access to the complete system, including administrator rights," warned the Federal Office for Information Security.
“It has to be expected that hackers will soon use the weak spots for attacks. The information used in this hack is publicly available, and can be used to infect a device running iOS simply by opening a specially crafted PDF file.”
It is unclear whether the patch will prevent the JailbreakMe.com app working correctly. Last week, the US Government ruled that the jailbreaking of mobile phones was a legal right. Apple warned that jailbreaking would void the warranty on any device.

Forthcoming software update = iOS 4.1
iOS 4.1 just went into beta 3, which means release is less than 2 weeks away, unless some major issues are discovered (unlikely).
Incidentally, 4.1 also already fixes the proximity sensor issue.
