If you want to retain data and do an 'upgrade', you need to go through the motions - since you're using a jailbroken iPhone, you would be going through a restore that kills all data anyway.

Hence, be sure to back EVERYTHING up first, perform your update on the same machine you use to sync your iTunes with, create the proper ipsw file using Pwnage tool, and the perform a full 'restore' from DFU mode on your iPhone - subsequently, perform a restore from your backup, and re-sync.

You can use the ipsw file to also subsequently update other iPhones, as long as they are of the same model as yours.

By the way, my suggestions are to revert the juvenile graphics from the Pwnage tool, to factory standard ones, and to eliminate the Installer.app (v4, beta) from the installation - it is buggy, there are no repositories, and Cydia is much better anyway)

Another reason I won't buy an out of region iPhone. Geez Landing on the moon sounds easier All I want to do is make a phone call.

snpark:

I read somewhere that it helps if you are standing on your head when you attempt to thaw out your frozen iPhone.

Take photos if you try it.

Yep - that's the point. Get a properly region supported iPhone, and all you need to do is plug it into iTunes now and then.

In all fairness, the jailbreaking process is hugely simplified by relatively well-designed apps these days -- the PwnageTool (horrible name) takes about 5-6 clicks to achieve the same goal, and walks you through anything that requires manual interaction - nevertheless, it's a production you have to go through (including, wait for hacked updates) everytime Apple releases an update....

ok thanks resolved, despite what any of you might think, this was actually nothing to do with the unlock jailbreak or whatever (this one was my italian one)

it seems it was a problem with the itunes server - too much traffic

a bit of fiddling and then actually having to reconnect on a different computer / laptop and restore it and it worked fine

some digging around showed me that last week and this week, this has been a very very common problem with a software update upgrade etc and it seems the itunes server itself crashed or so they tell me

anyway mine is back working fine as it was before

cheers duck

This is why I own a Nokia, doesn't matter where I got it, I just plug in to my PC's USB port and it seeks out and installs the most current updates.

From USA Today a little good news/bad news story:

Apple (AAPL) acknowledged Tuesday that a software update for the iPhone partly fixes the connection snags that have caused a global firestorm for the new iPhone 3G.
Though mum on details, Apple spokeswoman Jennifer Bowcock said on Tuesday, "The software update improves communication with 3G networks."

TECHNOLOGY LIVE: More iPhone fixes on the way?

In recent days, customers around the globe have complained about dropped calls and other connection issues with the latest iPhone. Such drops apparently occur when calls are handed off from the 3G network to a slower network, such as AT&T's Edge, when 3G isn't available.

News reports placed at least part of the blame on faulty 3G chipsets from German chipmaker Infineon Technologies (IFX). If it is a chip problem, it's uncertain if all the connection troubles can be solved by Apple's latest software update alone.

Michael Gartenberg, vice president for mobile strategy at Jupitermedia, says the whole thing may be overblown. "We've seen these isolated reports about people having connectivity issues with 3G and Edge, and frankly I have those issues on a variety of phones," he says. "Cellphone coverage is tricky."

This has been an especially difficult stretch for Apple. On Monday, the company also issued a free 60-day extension to MobileMe subscribers on top of the one-month extension subscribers already received. The $99-a-year "cloud computing" service is the latest version of what used to be called.Mac. Among other services, it promises to synchronize calendar and contact information across Macs, PCs and iPhones.

"We have already made many improvements to MobileMe, but we still have many more to make," Apple said in an e-mail to subscribers. "We know that MobileMe's launch has not been our finest hour."

Apple received some good news Tuesday. The company took top customer-satisfaction honors among personal computer manufacturers, according to the University of Michigan's American Customer Satisfaction index. While the overall PC industry suffered satisfaction declines, Apple posted an all-time high.

"The fact that Apple is not dependent on the Windows Vista operating system hasn't hurt either," says University of Michigan professor Claes Fornell, who heads the ACSI. The other PC makers build machines with Microsoft's (MSFT) oft-criticized operating system. The index measures results only for the three-month period ended in June, before Apple's MobileMe-a culpa.

Maybe they shoulda stuck to computers...

Your continuous ability to misdirect, misinform and misdirect continuously fascinates me.

It appears that updates to Nokia phones (in your case, N95) are not as automatic and seamless as you imply...

http://nokia.us/link?cid=PLAIN_TEXT_189408

...and the software updates do not appear to be without problems:

Losing all data when updating, *AND* inability to restore from a backup because Nokia changed data formats? Brilliant:

http://discussions.europe.nokia.com/discussions/board/message?board.id=swupdate&message.id=27686

Phones getting bricked from applying a software update? Brilliant:

http://conversations.nokia.com/home/2008/05/service-in-th-2.html

Seems regionally different phones or phones under different carriers do not get the same firmware upgrades, or even any firmware upgrades at all. Brilliant:

http://www.decoder.com.au/2008/04/06/how-to-upgrade-your-3mobile-australia-nokia-n95-firmware/

Announcemnets of new firmware features (nice), and comments how this doesn't work for some people:

http://igadgetlife.com/2007/11/26/n95-firmware-update-gets-demand-paging/

My fave comment: "the generic N95 Firmware is always released first and then Operator Specific (Vodafone, Orange etc..) will then be released in the coming weeks as they add their customisations.."

Hmmm.... Doesn't appear as smooth or automatic as you make it out to be -- unless you were describing the iPhone...

This one ought to sell well and briskly in Australia, being called the M8.

Now, at least we have definite proof that the working conditions in the iPhone factories are happy and enjoyable.... that is, if she still works there, once these pictures make the rounds.

Well, I managed to upgrade my friend's 2G iPhone. He had it all backed up, so that saved the time, the only tricky part was getting into the damn DFU mode. Daffy, you mentioned holding the power button and home button and when the logo appears, release the power button and keep the home button depressed, but that didn't work. Tried it a few times. Apparently, it needs to be 10 seconds, and just before the logo appears. Following the counter provided by the Pwnage tool worked. Anyway, other than that it was just a few clicks to get it to 2.0.1 directly.
