You always use the iphone as a paper weight.

ROTFLMAO When he's not out posing with it, of course.

Pull all the links from the Internet you wish iDuck but it does *not* change the fact that in my case what I said is true, I plug my phone into my PC and the software updater updates my software as necessary.

As you have pointed out on the 'Z' there are plenty of idiots out there who could not 'chew gum and walk at the same time'. Funny enough these are the people who are most likely to post to internet blogs how bad the product is cuz it is never their fault (of course).

Nokia has its issues, especially with the Customer Service Operation in Singapore. There have been a raft of complaints in the Straits Times over this. However I can not confirm or deny these claims as I have never had to take a Nokia phone to the shop. Quite a different case from the Sony Ericsson phones that I have owned.

BTW: Very poor attempt at misdirecting attention from the USA Today that I posted. Why is that iDuck? Cat have your beak or is it that you want to divert the readers from that post (post #6 pg 131) ...

Okay, fair enough -- but why does this apply to Nokia products, to render complaints harmless, yet somehow the same rash of complaints about the iPhone is literally 'gold' and 'gospel' to you? Can you explain that?

What is there to address, or what is there to 'divert' from?

So, you want me to address this, bullet point by bullet point?

Apple (AAPL) acknowledged Tuesday that a software update for the iPhone partly fixes the connection snags that have caused a global firestorm for the new iPhone 3G.

First of all, it's not surprising you gravitate to an article with words like 'firestorm' to further attempt to sensationalize this.

A quote from your very article, though, best addresses this:

Quote: from China Sailor on 11:49 pm on Aug. 20, 2008
Michael Gartenberg, vice president for mobile strategy at Jupitermedia, says the whole thing may be overblown. "We've seen these isolated reports about people having connectivity issues with 3G and Edge, and frankly I have those issues on a variety of phones," he says. "Cellphone coverage is tricky."

Which, really, is what most of this is all about - particularly when we take into account your own view on such such 'firestorms' ("there are plenty of idiots out there who could not 'chew gum and walk at the same time'. Funny enough these are the people who are most likely to post to internet blogs how bad the product is cuz it is never their fault (of course) ")

The fact is quite simply that, just like you with your Nokia, I am *not* experiencing any of the 3G connectivity problems. I get reception in some areas, and I get worse reception in others.

Occasionally, I lose a connection (like, in an elevator) - I get better reception in some areas where 2G used to work less well, and worse reception in some areas where 2G worked better. This is the nature of cellular networks. I had the same issues with my Nokia phones, and I'm quite sure you have similar experiences.

Quote: from China Sailor on 11:49 pm on Aug. 20, 2008
Though mum on details, Apple spokeswoman Jennifer Bowcock said on Tuesday, "The software update improves communication with 3G networks."

Which allegedly it does -- the 2.0.2 software, as released this week, does not claim to address everything 3G - it addresses other items. For example, my MobileSafari has not crashed since the update; some typing lags are gone;

While Apple is releasing incremental updates to address and work through minor issues, as well as some 3G issues, they are working towards a larger 2.1 update to be released in September, that will address a wider range of issues. I actually appreciate seeing progress being made, in increments -- comparatively, while I certainly liked my Nokia phones, Nokia's firmware update policy was patchy, at best -- and let's not even talk about Windows Media, which has seen ONE update in three years, despite a ton of problems.

Quote: from China Sailor on 11:49 pm on Aug. 20, 2008
In recent days, customers around the globe have complained about dropped calls and other connection issues with the latest iPhone. Such drops apparently occur when calls are handed off from the 3G network to a slower network, such as AT&T's Edge, when 3G isn't available.
So, how is this news, or how does this require 'diverting'. How is this different from many other phones, with new technology. How was that N95 when first released?

Quote: from China Sailor on 11:49 pm on Aug. 20, 2008
News reports placed at least part of the blame on faulty 3G chipsets from German chipmaker Infineon Technologies (IFX). If it is a chip problem, it's uncertain if all the connection troubles can be solved by Apple's latest software update alone.
Which I posted a comprehensive link about, but I don't expect you would have actually read it -- you claim to clamor for facts, but when they are presented to you, you gloss them over, if you read them at all.

Here's some interesting and factually more accurate and researched reading on the iPhone 3G reception issues, and what's related to it:

This has been an especially difficult stretch for Apple. On Monday, the company also issued a free 60-day extension to MobileMe subscribers on top of the one-month extension subscribers already received. The $99-a-year "cloud computing" service is the latest version of what used to be called.Mac. Among other services, it promises to synchronize calendar and contact information across Macs, PCs and iPhones.

The issues that the MobileMe launch encountered have been well documented - particularly via the 'leaked' memo from Steve Jobs to his troops, where he admitted that MobileMe has not been Apple's finest hour ("We have already made many improvements to MobileMe, but we still have many more to make," Apple said in an e-mail to subscribers. "We know that MobileMe's launch has not been our finest hour."), though committed to a fix and resolution by year's end.

In fact, there's a good comparison written up comparing Steve Jobs' recent memo, and Steve Ballmer's, which makes for interesting reading - you'll probably skip the link, but here it is for interested parties:

Apple received some good news Tuesday. The company took top customer-satisfaction honors among personal computer manufacturers, according to the University of Michigan's American Customer Satisfaction index. While the overall PC industry suffered satisfaction declines, Apple posted an all-time high.
Yeah, and despite all the gloom and doom that you wave about, Apple keeps doing well -- despite the business practices that you soooo disagree with.

I know you're not into Blackberry, though some people are, and they are jonesing for the Blackberry bold as a 'better' choice than the iPhone - so it might be of interest that the Bold's web browsing speed is pretty marginal (even on fast connections) and that it appears to encounter similar problems as the iPhone 3G with 3G connectivity. I have a feeling Blackberry owners will be waiting a while for that fix.

http://www.mobilecomputermag.co.uk/20080819818/rim-blackberry-bold/page-2.html

"Unfortunately, as excellent as it is in delivering a desktop-like web browsing experience on a small screen, the BlackBerry Bold’s web browser is just far too slow to be a serious alternative to the iPhone. The Bold is the first BlackBerry with 3G support, but even over a more reliable Wi-Fi connection, our iPhone 2G repeatedly finished downloading a web page several seconds before the Bold had even got past a blank screen and a “Requesting…” message. Even with just its 3G connection active, the Bold still lagged behind the iPhone 2G with its EDGE connection. Either Apple is doing something right or RIM is doing something wrong with their respective web browsers, but whatever the case, it’s a pretty poor show for the Bold."

...and here's a great head-to-head comparison between Blackberry Bold and iPhone:

Nokia's problems are not being reported in:

CNN Money
USA Today
Wall Street Journal
NPR's 'All Things Considered'

It might be because APPL is an American company although in the case of the WSJ and NPR they are *not* US centric but are reflecting on how much these problems in not line with APPL's reputation.

Now remember that I have read and reported here on Nokia's problems in Singapore as reported in the Straits Times. I was also the first to slam MSFT for the crap they pulled concerning Vista. I think this reflects the fact that I am not doing this to slam the iPhone but to provide a counterpoint to the 'all is love and joy' reports being made here...

Nice to see you flexibly redefining the criteria of what constitutes a viable source -- you know, as well as I do, that the reason why Nokia is not receiving the same attention is simply because Nokia is old (very old) news, and no one cares about mobile phone connection problems -- well, no one, unless they are Apple's, then it's front page news.

I keep coming back to your quote: "As you have pointed out on the 'Z' there are plenty of idiots out there who could not 'chew gum and walk at the same time'. Funny enough these are the people who are most likely to post to internet blogs how bad the product is cuz it is never their fault (of course)."

I might also point out again how you equally stay away from links and URLs that might actually provide you with facts, instead of sensationalism -- all the passive aggressive backpedalling won't change that.

Your 'counter points' are heavily tainted.

Sorry iDuck,

But the Wall Street Journal and National Public Radio (NPR) are hardly sensationalist.

Try reading a little or listening to some unbiased (albeit somewhat liberal) radio instead of simply surfing the net. The net hardly qualifies as unbiased.

Give you an example. The Web-bot project which correctly predicted a major 'life-changing incident for America' in July 2001 (obtaining its information from thousands of 'spiders' crawling through the net) is now predicting that the Mayans are right and the world will end in 2012. In reality this is because there is so much chatter on the net regarding the subject that the computer models are saying that it must be a fact.

The same applies to obscure web-sites and blogs that dis products. They are not subject to review but are able to say what they want (one recently claimed that Switzerland would be absorbed by a black hole).

Now if I were quoting the National Enquirer or 'Glen Beck' then you might have an argument.

But media organizations like the ones I listed depend on their legitimacy to survive. And since NPR is funded by donations and grants they are held to an even higher standard.

I suggest that you do not attack legitimate sources of mainstream information, it really makes you look unsophisticated and uneducated...

- I have an iPod Touch. Love it.
- To make phone calls I have a couple of years old Sony Ericsson. Works just fine.

Some of the complaints against the first version of the iPhone was that it failed somewhat in it's core functionality; making a phone call (low sound etc.)

You that have tried both; has it been improved or is it still a multimedia platform with a phone addon?

Need a little more straw for those strawmen of yours?

Really, CS, you continue building your same circular arguments, all the while ignoring any relevant factual information provided you in the form of links and actual factual analysis (and, while I'm sure you dispute the 'legitimacy' of any source not from your holy trinity, how would you know they are not 'legitimate', since you never so much as click on any of the links provided... which is a point I have made several times, and which you repeatedly avoid responding to, not surprisingly.

Unless you start actually engaging in an actual discourse, including examing facts presented to you, I will have no other option than to lob you into the same category of snpark or Loung Steeb - windup troll with lots of hot air.

All the quoting of fancy cars and fancy suits is not going to give any legitimacy when you continue down this path.
