and getting it repaired is like trying to find the lost tribe in the Incas.
This is Apple's one Achilles Heel in Thailand -- service; mostly because it appears that Apple corporate representation doesn't seem to give too much of a crap.

I still value a good product, over having to deal with crap - but to each their own. I understand and have sympathy for your position.

Hi

this seems like the right place to ask this,

can you use an iPad with a Thai Sim, assuming your iPad was set-up for a Sim card originally ?

Does it matter if its an iPad 1 or 2 ?

iPad 2 are 3G which I know is just starting in Thailand but I "thinK" it will go back to 2G if there is no 3G in the area,

This seems like a better plan than using "free" wifi which is sometimes hard to find and who knows how secure !

Or am I missing something ?

Ohh and I will be using prepaid and only for 2-3 week visits

Yes, yes, and yes!

That's exactly what I did, with both iPad 1 and iPad 2 -- Apple's iPad tablets are not "locked", so you can use any SIM.

I generally pick up a TRUE SIM, load it up with a months worth of "unlimited" 3G / internet access, and enjoy it - The SIM will cost you around 100 Baht, and the unlimited plan runs around 600 Baht. The TRUE store can configure it for you (you will need to activate and configure SIM and plan in your phone, as it's done over SMS text messages, and the iPad by itself doesn't provide any SMS access app.

I also believe that at this time TRUE has a dedicated iPad SIM and plan, that you can just pick up, insert and use - not sure if that plan is available as a prepaid option.

Generally, at the end of my trip, I toss the iPad SIM (I keep my iPhone SIM plan alive, but it's not worth it for the iPad SIM, though the SIM is good for up to a year (you *will* need to cancel the plan at the end of your trip, or it will attempt to charge every month from your balance).

Apple approaches Education Ministry
Published: 21/11/2011 at 03:48 PM
Online news: Economics

Computer giant Apple has expressed interest in making a deal to supply its tablet computers to the Education Ministry for use in Thai schools.

A delegation from Apple Inc met Education Minister Woravat Au-apinyakul on Monday and proposed that its products could benefit the ministry's student tablet project.

The minister said Apple and his ministry would form a working group to test how Apple products could serve the project. If the test proved positive, the ministry would be interested, despite the high prices. If not, the ministry would choose an Android operating system, Mr Woravat said.

"What is needed today is technology that can be really applied. We are not buying devices because all of them are the same... The Education Ministry will make an important decision, whether it will buy only devices or devices with systems," the education minister said.

Chinapat Phumrat, secretary-general of the Basic Education Commission, said Apple had argued that it had the best educational solutions.

In response, the Education Ministry said that Thai students would study not only to gain knowledge but also to have jobs and income in the future. Therefore, Thai students would need tablet computers that would enable them to develop applications for worldwide markets, he said.

The distribution of tablet computers to students was one of election campaign promises of the governing Pheu Thai Party.

Who wants to take bets all upper level ministers, and their kids have Ipad II's in the next few months and Apple doesn't even get a thank you?

Don't they know that contract has already been unofficially awarded. From the last I checked Thaksin doesn't own any Apple stock, or part of the company....lolol.

Yeah, that's my thoughts as well.

I guess the contract will surprisingly be awarded to the shinPad - though my first thought back then was that the iPad would be the perfect fit -- which is why it will never happen.

Of course, Apple Thailand could be smart and give a handful of iPad units to TWO very important people - one important person and his daughter.

It's a good news for the poor families...they can sell their child iPad for some money.

Bad news for hi-so..they have to find new gadget to flash at the mall/coffee shop b/c it will be too common.

Good news for tourists that they may find a good deal on iPad here at place like MBK.

Don't kid yourself about finding it cheaper because of this, if by some miracle it does happen. They would still charge the 200% import duty as a luxury item....lolol. The government wouldn't pass up a money maker of that level.

It is also how I see Apple not being able to compete with the real winning bidder too (on paper for the transparency requirement...lolol). Apple will be classed as a luxury item, and the winning tablet won't be, thus a cheaper import duty.

Doesn't even have to happen that way, if the winning tablet is "made in Thailand" (the usual way, labels being mere decoration in Thailand).

Since you have had both is there any reason to get the Ipad 2 over the iPad 1 ? I can probably find an iPad one for abour $200 used, but it will be $400 plus for an Ipad2,

Basic internet use, youtube etc

thanks for the info

The only significant differences for the iPad 2 are:

- 2 x cameras (but the cameras are shitty)
- 2 x speed for CPU and graphics. Not a concern for basic tasks.
- slimmer, slicker size. Doesn't seem an issue for you.

The first gen iPad appears to be just as good for you - be sure to get a nice, solid case that protects the back of the unit well - unprotected it tends to dent under impact.

It runs iOS 5 just as well - if you have an iPhone, be sure to se photo stream, and any pictures taken via the iPhone will show up on your iPad within moments.
