Report from Bangkok Post dated Tuesday 12 April 2011 :-

Apple's iPad to remain top tablet in 2015: Gartner
================================

The tablet computer market is heating up with new entrants all the time, but Apple's iPad will remain the top device over the next few years, according to technology research company Gartner.

Gartner, in a forecast released Monday, said mounting competition will see Apple's share of the touchscreen tablet market decline but the iPad will still make up nearly half of all tablets sold in 2015.

Gartner said the iPad will account for 47 percent of worldwide sales of 294.3 million tablets in 2015, down from 63.5 percent of 108.2 million units to be sold in 2012 and 68.7 percent of 69.7 million tablets to be sold this year.

The iPad, which was released in April of last year, accounted for 83.9 percent of the total 17.6 million tablets sold in 2010, according to Gartner.

Gartner said tablets running Google's Android operating system will see their market share rise steadily -- from 14.2 percent last year, to 19.9 percent this year, to 24.4 percent in 2012 and 38.6 percent in 2015.

Tablets running Blackberry maker Research In Motion's QNX software will claim 5.6 percent of the tablet market this year, 6.6 percent in 2012 and 10.0 percent in 2015, Gartner said.

The only other significant player in Gartner's forecast was Hewlett-Packard with tablets running the WebOS operating system acquired from Palm.

WebOS tablets were forecast to have 4.0 percent of the market by the end of 2011, 3.9 percent by 2012 and 3.0 percent by 2015.

Microsoft, which has been marketing its Windows operating system to tablet makers around the world, was notably absent from the Gartner forecast.

Blackberry's first tablet, the PlayBook, goes on sale on April 19.

Gartner research vice president Carolina Milanesi said "it will take time and significant effort for RIM to attract developers and deliver a compelling ecosystem of applications and services around QNX to position it as a viable alternative to Apple or Android.

"This will limit RIM's market share growth over the forecast period," Milanesi said.

"It will be mainly organizations that will be interested in RIM's tablets because they either already have RIM's infrastructure deployed or have stringent security requirements," she said.

Milanesi said that in general, "smartphone users will want to buy a tablet that runs the same operating system as their smartphone.

"This is so that they can share applications across devices as well as for the sense of familiarity the user interfaces will bring," she said.

so now they launch i-pad2 which is significantly better faster thinner etc AT THE SAME PRICE AS IPAD1

why would u buy an ipad now then? surely you just buy an ipad2?
That's the idea - with the launch of iPad 2, iPad 1 is virtually discontinued - Apple also simultaneously dropped the prices on iPad (as long as supplies last) by $100 across the board, and by $150 on the refurbished store.

Apple *always* releases the newest product at the same prices as the outgoing product, while offering more features. I guess you have't paid attention over the past 10-15 years.

Well, maybe he already did buy one?
They apparently already figured out how to reconstitute some organs (and even Bones) using our own Cells.
Ok, granted it could take 5 to 10 years to wait until the new Liver is fully grown, but at least I think they are very advanced with this.

You are correct - they have been able to successfully grow a variety of organs, from host cells, mixed with stem cells, including heart and liver - so we are not that far off. It's conceivable that anyone in need of organs, if they can hang on for another 5-7 years, would be able to get custom grown organs. Apparently, the organs can grow within as little as 5-6 months or faster.

Sony unveils its first tablet computer to take on Apple
===================================

TOKYO, JAPAN - Sony, a laggard in the booming tablet market, launched its first tablet computers in an ambitious attempt to grab the second spot in the market created and dominated by Apple's iPad.

The gadgets will use an operating system based on Google's Android 3.0, said Kunimasa Suzuki, deputy president of the consumer products and services group, as he unveiled one of the devices from his jacket pocket during a media launch on Tuesday.

The tablets called S1 and S2, are WiFi and 3G/4G compatible. One of the models will have two screens, Suzuki added.

S1 has a 9.4-inch display while S2 has two 5.5-inch displays that can be folded. The tablets will allow use of PlayStation games.

Sales of tablet devices are expected to quadruple to about 294 million units between 2011 and 2015, with almost half that Android-based, research firm Gartner has forecast.

Suzuki raised eyebrows in January when he told reporters at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas that Sony was aiming for the No.2 spot in the tablet market within a year even though it had yet to put a product on the market.

The company has emphasised the need to differentiate its tablet from rivals, even if that takes time.

"Although it's a late comer in the market, it has potential as what you need is just one big uniqueness that can sell to customers be it design or whatever," said Lee Sun-tae, an analyst at Meritz Securities in Seoul.

"By the same token it can be just one of another Android phones flooding the market amid intensifying competition."

In a bid to tap that burgeoning demand, competitors including Samsung Electronics - whose Galaxy Tab is Apple's strongest competitor in the tablet market - and Motorola, LG Electronics and HTC are flooding the market with tablets running Android.

Shares in Sony, which unveils its quarterly results on May 26, fell 2.1 per cent on Tuesday.

iPad 2 launched in Bangkok
Source: BangkokPost

The new Apple iPad 2 went on sale in Bangkok on Friday, with prices ranging from 15,900 baht to 25,900 baht -- and quickly sold out.

The touchscreen tablet at the starting price comes with a 32-gigabyte wi-fi only version while the top 64-gigabyte model features both wi-fi and 3G capabilities.

Crowds of people lined up for the highly anticipated iPad 2 launch.

The first buyer in Thailand was Kriengsak Chamadol, 33. He said he had waited at Siam Discovery since 5pm yesterday.

The stocks of the iPad 2 ran out within one hour.

Apple earlier slashed the price of the original iPad by 3,000 baht, ahead of the iPad 2 launch, and supplies ran out two months ago.
