I'm sure that the Android tablet releases will be eclipsing the iPad launch.

Oh, wait, you mean they don't

Tablets take centre stage at Commart Comtech Thailand 2011
======================================

Tablet computers are the stars of the Commart Comtech Thailand 2011 trade show this year, with big players waging a price war in an attempt to steal market share from the Apple iPad 2.

At the four-day event, running until Sunday at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, Acer has cut its tablet prices by 2,000 baht, while netbooks can be had for as little as 6,000 baht.

Other major brands including Dell, Asus, HTC, Toshiba and Lenovo are preparing to launch their tablet products by September.

On the first day of the IT show yesterday, at least 50 people were queueing up before the 10 am opening to buy an iPad 2, and the first day's allotment of 100 units was gone in an hour.

Nitipat Praweenwongwuthi, senior marketing manager of Acer Computer (Thailand), said his company had cut the price of its Iconia Tab A500 from 19,153 baht to 17,900 baht including VAT to challenge the iPad 2.

Krittawit Krittayarungroj, marketing manager of Dell Thailand, said the Dell Streak 5-inch tablet was being offered at 16,900 baht, a 3,000-baht discount.

Samsung, meanwhile, has already slashed the retail price of its 3G-enabled Galaxy Tab from 18,900 to 14,900 baht.

Takon Niyomthai, country manager of Toshiba Thailand, said it would introduced its Android-based tablet next month to capitalise on market demand, with a price above 15,000 baht.

The notebook computer segment has been less affected by tablet fever as products priced from 19,000 to 22,000 baht remain attractive to students, particularly those who use computers for games.

Pathom Indarodom, general manager of ARIP Plc, the organiser of Commart, said 70% of the event's space or 15,000 square metres was dominated by tablet and notebook vendors with the rest for internet televisions.

ARIP expects 1.8 billion baht in sales to be generated at the event. Notebooks would remain the best sellers but tablets were likely to be in the top three, said Mr Pathom.

People, go to the Apple Thailand Website and Order your Ipad2 online.

I bought 3 of them for my business. I need the lowest category (15,900 one) and they got delivered 24 hours later.

Intel unveils laptops that include tablet features
=============================

SAN FRANCISCO – Intel unveiled a new category of laptops that it says will include the best features of tablets as the world's top chipmaker struggles to find its footing in the exploding market for mobile gadgets.

At the Computex technology exhibition in Taipei, computer maker Asus is expected to show off its first new PC in the"Ultrabook" class, and Intel said it and models made by other manufacturers would go on sale by Christmas and cost under US$1,000 (S$1,236).

The Ultrabooks will be svelte and lightweight but still pack high-performace processors. They should account for 40 per cent of laptop sales to consumers by the end of next year, Tom Kilroy, a senior vice president at Intel, told Reuters in an interview.

"We're shooting for ultra responsive. You'll have always-on, always-connected, much more responsive devices, similar to what you would see with a tablet today such as an iPad," he said.

Santa Clara, California-based Intel is eager to make laptops more attractive to consumers who are increasingly captivated by Apple's AAPL.O iPad and other mobile gadgets.

Its processors power 80 per cent of the world's PCs but Intel has failed so far to adapt them for smartphones and tablets. Manufacturers like Motorola MMI.N and Apple favor processors made using energy-efficient technology licensed by Britain's ARM Holdings ARM.L.

This month, Intel took the wraps off next-generation "3D"technology that crams more transistors onto microchips, betting it will eventually become a significant advantage in tablets and smartphones.

Intel also plans to shrink the circuits on its mobile chips by three sizes within three years – a faster pace than normal –to make them much more efficient.

Kilroy declined to comment on recent speculation that PC maker Acer Inc 2353.TW is planning to launch a tablet within months using Intel's brand new Oak Trail chip and Google's Android operating system. Acer could not be reached for comment.

Such a device would be a major test of Oak Trail, Intel's first chip designed specifically for tablets and able to support the widely popular Android platform.

The Ultrabook is not the first PC category that Intel and Asus have promoted together. In 2007, Asus introduced a small and simplified laptop that is widely viewed as the first of many low-cost "netbooks" geared toward surfing the Internet.

Kilroy said that prices for Ultrabook laptops would likely fall to around US$600 (S$741) within a couple of years.

HP targets Apple's iPad with new tablet
==========================

NEW YORK - US technology giant Hewlett-Packard rolled out its new TouchPad tablet computer on Friday, seeking to dethrone the dominant Apple iPad and revive its slumping fortunes.

The TouchPad went on sale in major US retailers such as Best Buy and Walmart as well as on Amazon.com, HP said in a statement.

It is expected to go on sale shortly in Britain, Ireland, France, Germany and Canada, and later this year it will become available in Italy, Spain, Australia, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Singapore.

Unlike the iPad, the TouchPad supports Adobe's Flash video format. It runs the webOS operating system, developed by Palm, the mobile-device pioneer that HP acquired last year for $1.2 billion.

The TouchPad debuted to mixed reviews, suggesting it will have difficulty challenging the iPad and its numerous imitators.

Last month, Apple said that it had sold 25 million iPads since releasing the first version of the device in April 2010. Apple released its next-generation iPad 2 in March.

Besides the iPad, the market for tablet computers now includes the Samsung Galaxy Tab, the BlackBerry PlayBook, the Motorola Xoom and dozens of devices running Google's Android operating system.

HP's stock has slumped 12 percent since the beginning of the year as many analysts have warned that the Palo Alto, California-based company is being overtaken by younger, nimbler rivals such as Apple and Dell.

Uh, actually, hp does *NOT* target Apple's iPad -- there have been recent interviews where the hp spokespeople and managers have made it a point that they are *not* targetting Apple, or even considering to "compete" with Apple.

They said so, very clearly.

"On the other hand, Kerris said “This market is in it’s infancy and there is plenty of room for both of us to grow.”

The companies that should be worried are Microsoft (no one wants a Windows tablet) and the various Android tablet manufacturers, none of which have managed to provide anything competitive at all in the tablet space - while hp's tablet is a very serious contender in the "I don't want an iPad, so what else is there" market.

Tablet use to grow 10-fold - IDC
=====================

BANGKOK -Global market research and analysis firm International Data Corporation (IDC) has put figures to the explosion in use of media tablets in the Asia-Pacific region, excluding Japan.

It says media tablets will experience a five-year compound annual growth rate of 54 per cent in the region, to multiply their numbers more than ten times, from 2 million units shipped in 2010 to 21 million units.

IDC expects more consumers to adopt media tablets for gaming, Web-browsing and social networking needs on the go. While mature markets like Korea, Australia and Taiwan are showing high interest in mobile devices like media tablets, China continues to demonstrate high purchasing power for new-technology products.

By contrast, emerging countries in the region, like Indonesia and Malaysia, have more conservative attitudes toward media tablets and still prefer mini-notebooks, with better keyboard input and a familiar user experience.

IDC said Apple became more active in Asia for the iPad 2 launch, similar to its approach with the iPhone 3G, and its aggressive pricing and strong branding left little room for other players. Samsung focused on its 7-inch tablet, relying on its domestic brand strength to boost its numbers, and a host of local Chinese brands joined the market to form a long tail. With product-development speed being their key strength, they may survive in some niche markets, the firm said.

"Over the next five years, Apple will set the pace in the media-tablet category. Competitors to iPad must innovate ways to differentiate their products though, lest consumer interest wanes in favour of the next tech gadget. Some of this demand may be driven by the education sector, such as the Thai government's recently announced plan to distribute 800,000 Android tablets to primary-school students.

While this latest announcement has not been yet factored into IDC's forecast, there are certainly opportunities out there to keep driving media-tablet growth," said IDC Asia Pacific's research manager for client devices research Melissa Chau.

Meanwhile, IDC expects sales of eReader devices to fall at a compound annual rate of 18 per cent, since they are limited to a single function, which media tablets cover anyway. Moreover, media tablets offer a better reading experience, with colour display for magazine content.

"Lack of localised content is an issue for eReaders in the Asia-Pacific, excluding Japan, region," said IDC Asia Pacific's senior market analyst for client devices research Dickie Chang.

"In China, for example, some consumers are still relying on pirated Internet downloads. Online bookstores haven't been earning device vendors wide margins on content, and they face aggressive iPad pricing, squeezing them further."

The eReader market is largely driven by Hanvon and Snda in China, as they entered the market early. In China, the eReader is a good gift choice, but more consumers are starting to consider media tablets. Although the Amazon Kindle only sells in some Asia-Pacific countries, it is still popular in English-speaking markets, such as Australia and New Zealand.

IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Media Tablet and eReader Tracker covers 13 markets in the Asia Pacific region, excluding Japan: Australia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Korea, New Zealand, the Philippines, China, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam.

Probably more accurate to say that tablet *manufacturing* will grow 10-fold (which I can see), though not necessarily seeing the same for actual usage (unless it's iPad sales).

Hewlett-Packard said it is stopping production of the HP TouchPad and closing its mobile devices business.
