A friend of mine suggested that we just turn on the music and let it play continuously. I thought the turning on the 3G and viewing a video would take up more juice. Do you have any suggestions?

I stream live tv ki
.full volume....well I pad at least.....( the battery lasts 4 hours)
Music...5 hours
Internet....( no streaming 5.5)
By about an hour faster than music.....with Internet playing same time ( as possible)
Phone batteries last longer....but I would stream something full boar volume

BK, you seem to have the opposite problem of the millions of other iPhone users out there, we all want to know how to make the battery last more than 4 hours running nominal, expected tasks such as email, chat and phone calls !!

This is to create an excuse for not receiving a call from the girlfriend. And you have to provide evidence of a phone with depleted battery when she checks.

I guess keeping screen turned on, turning 3G on and let Youtube play continuously. Take several of these full length concerts of over one hour.
If you install battery status app, you'll see that music gives one of the longest play times, so your friend is incorrect.
An even faster way is to get rid of your girlfriend all together.

In that case it makes sense. I'd keep location services turned on, and run You Tube videos as DrL suggests. You could also set all of your email accounts up to 'Fetch' every 1 minute.
Alternatively you could run it down now, and then set the clock to many different times and take screen grabs of battery at 3%. Then next time you need to be off the radar just SMS her a pic of your screen with the time closest to the actual time and say your battery has 5 minutes left.
