Depending on size and battery consumption of this new chipset, that means that the next iPad will be the first 2013 device to have a truly global LTE chipset, followed by the iPhone 5S in September.

Of course, the problem with a 'global' LTE chipset is that most countries out there aren't really set or regulated for LTE yet, so it's kinda a moving target.

Here's a good article about which model of the iPhone 5 is best for a world traveler:

iPhone 5 sold in Hong Kong's grey market for a whopping $1,100

In countries where MNCs choose not to launch their products in first, you have to be thankful for the grey market as it basically gives customers access to devices before they have been officially launched for that particular region. While Hong Kong will be getting the iPhone 5 on the 21st of September along with other selected countries, it seems that the iPhone 5 has already made it into the country’s grey market where they are being sold for a whopping $1,100. Of course these models are unlocked but at $1,100, they are a few hundred dollars more than they would cost if purchased officially.

Then again we suppose there are plenty of iPhone 5 hopefuls out there who would love to have bragging rights at being able to get it before their friends or co-workers do, and wouldn’t mind paying a premium for it. The seller, Mr. Lo, even has a standing offer where he will pay for sealed iPhone 5s at a premium of up to $200 on their original price. The reason? He believes that due to the iPhone 5 selling out so fast and with shipments now slipping to 3-4 weeks, there will still be buyers out there who will pay top dollar to skip the wait.

Report from APF dated 20 September 2012 :-

iPhone 5 frenzy builds ahead of Friday release
==================================

SAN FRANCISCO: Gadget lovers have flooded Apple with pre-orders and set up camp outside the company's real-world stores to get their hands on the new-generation iPhone 5, set for release on Friday.

"The fact that the iPhone 5 is doing as well as it is opposed to other phones is a tribute to Apple marketing," Gartner analyst Van Baker told AFP. "They are really good at this."

The analyst dismissed efforts by Apple adversary Samsung to poke fun at iPhone fanatics and the lack of innovative handset features in print and video ads.

"I had to laugh at the Samsung ads," Baker said. "It's hardware geeks throwing rocks at Apple; but Apple has a good sense of what is important to include and when."

Aspiring iPhone 5 owners started a queue outside the Apple store in Manhattan last week and similar vigils have begun outside the California company's shops at other spots around the world.

Apple said that it received more than two million orders for its new iPhone 5 in the 24 hours after it began pre-sales online on September 14.

"iPhone 5 pre-orders have shattered the previous record held by iPhone 4S and the customer response to iPhone 5 has been phenomenal," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing.

Apple unveiled the new version of its iconic smartphone at a San Francisco media event on September 12 and promised that it would be available in 100 countries by year's end.

The first customers are expected to get the device on Friday, but Apple has pushed the delivery date for new orders out several weeks due to fierce demand.

The notion iPhone 5 being tough to get was expected to spur more people to lay siege to stores for the hotly anticipated release.

The iPhone 5 will be available at Apple retail outlets, and for US customers through AT&T, Sprint, Verizon Wireless, Best Buy, RadioShack, Target, Walmart stores and other resellers.

Some analysts say Apple could sell 10 million units in the opening days and 50 million before the end of 2012.

Apple shares broke the US$700 mark this week and stood at $701.60 in after-market trade on Wednesday.

The iPhone 5, with a bigger screen and slimmer body, was quickly branded by analysts as a sure hit.

Apple chief executive Tim Cook called the launch "the biggest thing to happen to iPhone since the iPhone."

The California company called the iPhone 5 "the thinnest smartphone in the world," with a glass and aluminum body that is 18 per cent thinner and 20 per cent lighter than iPhone 4S.

The new iPhone has a rich four-inch (10-centimetre) display prime for the red-hot smartphone market, in which screen size is a key factor for buyers.

The iPhone 5 will debut on Friday in the United States, Canada, Britain, France, Germany, Australia, Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore.

Pricing for US customers will start at US$199 with a two-year telecom service contract.

Apple earlier rolled out its new iOS 6 mobile gadget operating system with new features, including a custom mapping service branded a disappointment by some reviewers.

"Seems pretty clear the new Maps is going to be the biggest problem with iOS 6," Apple fan John Gruber wrote on his Daring Fireball blog.

"It'll be interesting to see how long it takes for Google to release a standalone Google Maps apps in the iOS App Store."

Apple's custom mapping program replaced Google Maps in the operating system.

An iPhone change with the potential to irk fans is a new "Lightning" connector to replace 30-pin connections, the piece that connects devices to computers, power outlets or docking stations.

Apple will sell adaptors for plugging new-generation iPhone and iPod touch devices into accessories already owned, such as stereo speakers or car sound systems.

The big-screen iPhone 5 compatible with high-speed "LTE" telecom networks has been among the most keenly anticipated products in the tech world.

"Apple is meeting all expectations," analyst Baker said. "Everything was getting great reviews until they started rolling out iOS 6 today."

The US Federal Trade Commission warned that scammers were already seeking to cash in on iPhone mania, with emails offering a chance to get one.

"Don't reply, and don't click on links provided in the message," the FTC said. "Links can install malware on your computer and take you to spoof sites that look real but whose purpose is to steal your information."

iPhone 5 big success, but no leap forward: analysts
=======================================

WASHINGTON: The new iPhone 5 is on its way to unprecedented commercial success, but the world's most iconic smartphone is facing tougher competition from rivals out-innovating Apple, analysts say.

Apple's newest iPhone launched on Friday has a host of design and technology improvements: it is lighter, slimmer, faster and more powerful, and has improved battery life and a bigger display likely to please its loyal customer base.

Yet some analysts say Apple is becoming a victim of its success -- and is limiting any major changes that could alienate its devoted fans.

"Apple is caught in a typical problem when you create a popular technology platform," said technology analyst and consultant Rob Enderle.

"You don't want to change it very much because some of your user base moves off to something else."

Some of the problems from changes arose with the release of Apple's glitch-prone maps program in its new operating system, prompting many complaints, as did Apple's new connector plug, which may require users to buy an adaptor.

Enderle said Apple has been "leapfrogged" in terms of mobile software by Microsoft's new Windows Phone system, and in hardware by rivals such as Samsung that offer bigger, bolder displays.

"The folks pushing the envelope on technology are Samsung, Nokia and even HTC," he said, naming the companies that have introduced new smartphones in recent months.

Apple, said Enderle, is limited by a single-product strategy that curtails its ability to make any major innovation.

"There is no way to get one product to address everyone's needs," he said. "Apple will eventually have to come up with a multi-product strategy. Their resistance for this on the iPhone is showing its weakness."

Enderle said the new iPhone is "the most elegant smartphone" on the market, but that its design targets only segments of the market. That contrasts with Samsung, which offers a range of devices from entry-level to high-end.

For Apple to have just a single iPhone, Enderle, said "is as if General Motors said every car needs to be a Cadillac."

The iPhone 5, with a bigger screen and slimmer body, was quickly branded by analysts as a sure hit. Some say Apple could sell 10 million units in the opening days and 50 million before the end of 2012.

But Tony Costa of Forrester Research says Apple is facing a much more competitive smartphone market that in past years.

"For the second year in a row, Apple has put forth significantly improved but underwhelming iPhones," said Costa.

"Apple's failure to continually bring new device innovations to the market allows competitors to catch up and threaten its iOS platform.

"Today, Apple's iOS platform and ecosystem seem invincible. But all empires eventually crumble, and unless Apple ups its device innovation game, we may be seeing Apple's iOS empire approaching its zenith."

Apple has fierce customer loyalty and has been gaining users, but has failed to keep pace with smartphones powered by Google's Android operating system.

Research firm IDC says Apple has 16.9 per cent of the global smartphone market, with 68 per cent of the market held by makers of Android phones, led by Samsung.

Ramon Llamas, mobile analyst at IDC, agreed that Apple is "just catching up to the trend" in many areas, but is not ready to bet against the Cupertino, California firm.

"Apple is still the reigning champion," Llamas said, noting that Apple has kept its customer base with a broad "ecosystem" that includes its huge app store and iTunes platform.

"Apple does a really good job of taking a feature and marketing it and wrapping it up in so much hype, that it makes it them seem that they are the ones that invented it," he said.

I love these "no leap forward" and "no more innovation" reviews, from reviewers who, for the most part, simply don't get it.

The leap forward happened 5 years ago,,and it was a leap that carried Apple 5-7 years forward. Technically, most competitors still haven't caught up, or are just now starting to catch up, barely, to iPhone 1 from 2007/2008.

What Apple has done since then, and continues to do, is methodically refine the existing product, mostly under the hood, and via the software - the software is the real innovation, here, and every single reviewer misses that point. It's comical.

In Thailand, Smuggled iPhones Go for Up to $1,400

Wilawan Watcharasakwet and James Hookway

BANGKOK – IPhone fanatics lined up in their droves across Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong to pick up the latest version of Apple Inc AAPL -0.49%.’s smartphone Friday. But enthusiasm also raged in Thailand – a country where the iPhone 5 won’t go on sale until later this year.

Customers here are flocking to crowded shopping warrens such as Mahboonkrong in downtown Bangkok to place deposits on phones smuggled in from places such as Hong Kong, Singapore and even the United States. One vendor in MBK – as it is known – said his team will try to bring over 100 phones into Thailand, and so far more than 80 people have handed over deposits of 5,000 baht, or $160, per phone.

This contraband comes at a price, however. The an unlocked, top-end 64 gigabyte iPhone 5 will cost 43,000 baht, or $1,387, compared with about $927 in Hong Kong. The cheaper 16GB version goes for 35,000 baht, with the 32GB version selling for 39,000 baht.

“There is very high demand here, that’s why the prices are so high. Many people want to be among the first to have the new iPhone, but nobody knows exactly when it will go on sale in Thailand,” said a vendor who asked not to be identified, adding that this was a “golden time” for MBK’s phone traders. “If you want one, you’d better make a deposit now,” he said.

The first batch will arrive at MBK at around noon on Saturday, traders said. “If you want to see some pandemonium, come then,” one added.

The new iPhone will cost much less when it makes its official launch in Thailand later this year, and will set back customers around the same it costs them to get an unlocked iPhone 4S at present.

What is less clear is when the new phones will be available. Representatives at the DTAC network run by Total Access Communications sa DTAC.TH +2.59%id they don’t know when they will be ready to sell the iPhone 5 in Thailand. An official at rival network Advanced Info Service said that it might be able to have the new phones available for subscribers at the end of this month, potentially giving the first batch of iPhone buyers just a couple of weeks of posing time before the rest of the country can get their mitts on them.

Maybe I should pack 10-15 iPhone 5 units in my suitcase again, as I used to do - an activity that EPC much maligned, and was bitterly jealous about, for what it was : good business, highly profitable, and good American capitalism.
